Community Question: How do you arm your Dreadnoughts?
Hello everyone,
I'm back with a question for you all! In my Iron Hands force I now have access to two contemptor dreadnoughts. My latest one to be completed was a dual twin linked lascannon contemptor for some ranged and relatively mobile shooting that could target both ground units and flyers. I have also been really happy with the paint job on the new contemptor and it represents how my scheme has evolved since my original dual kheres contemptor was built and painted.
I went for a cleaner look with the grey dry brushing building up into the silver highlighting which acts as both an edge highlight and battle damage. This is the scheme I am looking to carry through into two other dreadnoughts so I have a cohesive look that I'm happy with when I display them or battle with them.
So I am going to be adding another contemptor and a leviathan to the mix as I have been icthing to have a go at painting one for the Iron Hands. I am mainly looking to arm the next two as combat based dreadnoughts but I am pretty open to suggestion at the moment.
They do look awesome...
So my question is how do you arm your dreadnoughts, both contemptors and leviathans? Or what do you think is the best weapon option to go for if you don't currently have one and would like one or want more like me!
Feel free to comment below!
Thanks again,
Aveinus Kaane
I'm pretty much all about the Kheres Assault Cannon on Contemptors. For Leviathans, I really want to like the Storm Cannon, but the total Unit Cost is too high for the amount of firepower it ends up kicking out. Pretty sure they're best off as CC versions in a Lucius Patter pod.
ReplyDeleteYeah the general consensus seems to be that the Leviathans are best with the cc weapons. I'll definitely look into it having a pod for it too. Thanks!
DeleteFor me, it depends on their battlefield role a little bit, but also the rule of cool too!
ReplyDeleteFor contemptors, one of: twin Kheres, twin fists, or Plasma cannon plus fist;
For contemptor mortis, twin Kheres plus havoc launcher (just because it really looks like it has so much firepower);
For Leviathan, siege drill and melta lance for competitiveness and it looks awesome -- this one will be my next purchase I think.
Some great suggestions there, I've been looking at the fist and plasma cannon variant for the contemptor and for the leviathan I'll definitely look into getting the siege drill and melta lance for it. It already sounds very Iron Hands to me!
DeleteSiege Drill with Melta Lance is a very fun Tank Hunter. I charged a Contemptor Mortis with Dual Kheres, and wrecked it before it could fight, taking not even a scratch from Overwatch
DeleteKheres and chainfist are the better options for contemptors IMO
ReplyDeleteThe Chainfist and Kheres are proving a pretty popular choice! Thanks for your advice!
DeleteI have two contemptors, one as dual autocannons with the option for a fist magnetized on. The other is a Kheres with fist that I often use as Honored Telemechrus. I also use a deredeo with the plasma cannonade and aiolos missiles (this one is expensive but fun) and a leviathan with one claw, one drill, two heavy flamers, and if I can afford it, the phosphex bombs. He often rides in a drop pod, so he is rather expensive, but he is immensely fun, and often earns his points back or absorbs far more firepower than he has any right to lol
ReplyDeleteI have been eyeing up a Deredeo, I think it could give me some really good options for what list I choose so thanks for reminding me about that! As for the leviathan, great advice on the weapons. I'm starting to like the sound of the drill more and more.
DeleteContemptor with chainfist, multi-melta and heavy flamers cos Salamanders :3
ReplyDeleteI'm thinking about taking a Talon with Kheres and fists to outflank with my Maru Skara Emperors Children, that's got to be scary appearing on your flank.
Yes that would be scary haha!
DeleteJust started planning a Thousand Son one, going for a Lascannon and Plasma Cannon combo. I see the Thousand Sons as more of a shooty and spells army...not so combaty
ReplyDeleteYeah I do agree mate, I don't see them as being too combaty either other than the scrab occult terminators.. not sure if they are called that for definite but i'm sure they'll be amazing models!
DeleteI go with whatever looks cool! Though I don't think I will do another dread with 2 shooting weapons. Contemptors and leviathans can be very powerful with certain combinations of shooting weapons! Leviathans are particularly nasty with two shooty shooty arms!
ReplyDeleteThough I think in a way that can be nicer to play against! For a more competitive stand point nothing better than 2 shooty arms!
DeleteHmm too shooty arms you say I'll have a look into that, the siege drill follows the rule of cool though haha
DeleteCurrently my Salamanders have got one with kheres assault cannon and powerfist but also picked up another Betrayal at Calth box so will do one with multi-melta and powerfist!
ReplyDeleteThe Kheres seems to be a popular choice! The dual Kheres contemptor I have has been pretty effective in games so far :)
DeleteI think dual Kheres will be next on my list!! Or dual multi-melta maybe?!
DeleteOne Kheres Assault Cannon is mandatory, the other one depends on deployment, drop pod or regular. Nice Iron Hands Dread btw
ReplyDeleteThanks Alex!
DeleteWell I have my contemptors (BaC ones) with interchangeable arms.
ReplyDeleteTwo kheres assault cannons, two powerfist, one multi melta and one custom twin linked Las cannon.
Yeah I've been thinking of maybe using my bac one but I think i'll go for another IH one for the iconography. Thanks for the advice!
DeletePersonally I go for a balance between anti-armour and anti-infantry firepower. For example my Death Guard Leviathans one is armed with the Storm Cannon and Siege Drill, the other the Melta Lance and Siege Claw. My contemptors follow a simular idea but with a greater preference for ranged firepower such as Volkite and Lascannon.
ReplyDeleteI generally arm mine so they look cool! Massive blood covered close combat weapon and then something that can kill tanks
ReplyDeleteI tend to arm mine more by fluff or rule-of-cool than anything.
ReplyDeleteAn example:
My Leviathan, Namtar the Godbreaker (Former Ashen Circle Centurion-Iconoclast) has grav and a siege drill, the better to tear down temples of false gods.
I've gone a bit over the top on my Leviathan, with the MeltaLance, Snipper, Phosphex AND Volkites in a Drop Pod. It's ended up being 435pts including the pod but there isn't a game yet where it hasn't killed upwards of 800pts on its own of infantry, armour and superheavies before it gets taken down.
ReplyDeleteThe Contemptor I have done up is dual Kheres, I was running it as a Mortis but lately I have been running it as a Cortus for bonus movement points and a little less on the points front, the BS4 drop isn't such an issue with the 12 shots either.
I want to get a pair of claws for it though or with inbuilt Grav guns, everything I have been hearing suggests that's a lethal combo.
I often do a little custom hobby work and magnetize all of the weapons in order to achieve maximum flexibility with the unit.
ReplyDeleteMy leviathan runs claw, drill, phosphex and Choom. Pods in, smashes things. Job done!
ReplyDeleteAll the choom, all the time.
ReplyDeleteSeriously, it depends on what role the dread is fulfilling in my army.
But choom!
With FW Dreads I have one CC oriented and another Shooty, I don't mix and match. I have a Shooty Leviathan, a Mortis Kheres Contemptor and a dual fist Contemptor, I will be getting a CC Leviathan. But for my plastic Dreads its mix and match dependant on my army list or scenario, so the arms are interchangeable.
ReplyDeleteIn my experience, leviathans are best served with a mix of shooting and combat weapons. Mathematically, it seems the best route is the Grav Flux Bombard and a Siege Drill, plus 2 TL volkite calivers and the phosphex missiles. Throw it in a drop pod to boot.
ReplyDeleteThe turn it lands, you can stay embarked on the pod and light up the enemy with all 3 phosphex missiles and the grav flux, not only dealing damage but creating an area of "do not go here" to help control their movement for the next turn, in which you would disembark the pod and charge in after firing your grav flux and volkite at the unit in question.
The drill doesn't help you fight infantry, but neither does the claw unless they have multiple wounds; but it is miles better at tackling armor, making your leviathan a true threat to everything on the table. Its the kind of unit your opponent will plan deployment around, altering their tactics from the jump. I love it!
I equip with what I think looks like it fits best for that Legion. Death Guard Favour Multi Melta and Power Claw (as in Betrayal) so that's what I did.
ReplyDeleteI also have a Leviathan dreadnought for my Iron Warriors, mainly it is a siege wrecking machine so I chose the claw and drill.
I do love Dreadnoughts and hope to have more finished in the future.
Well, I'm IX legion, so my contemptors have a pair or power fists with integral Iliastus assault cannon and havoc launcher, and Kheres assault cannon and power fist with iliastus.
ReplyDeleteFor iron hands, maybe go with power fist and chainfist, both with graviton guns?
Depends really. I never have my contemptors as jacks of all trades rather specialist. Like duel kheares assault cannons for infantry and vehicles as multi melta, melta gun chainfists for anti vehicle. I don't have a leviathan but am considering the graviton flux bombard and storm cannon or just duel storm cannon.
ReplyDeleteBecause I like this blog I will say something about my cont. and my levi. I play Iron hands and have now 4 cont. 2 with claw and fist and the havoc and flamers good enough for me xD
ReplyDeleteThe third is a mortise with classic kheres and the last carries two multimelta helps me against many monsters
Now to my levi. Very expensive I use a drill and the grav wich is perfect against infantry, killing complete 10 men squads with one shot and make other vehicles scream in cc the grav is not really perfect against vehicles :b
for my salamanders I like the el cheapo cortus with twin multi melta for that sweet master crafted
