Sons of Nostramo
Evening all.
I thought I would kick off my Night Lords page with an idea of where I'm heading with them. For a while Night Lords have been compared with Batman - and I quite like that analogy, so I thought I'd include some elements of that in my force.
The army idea really arose from a Forge World release schedule. I had started collecting Imperial Fists as a 'codex' legion - something I don't do very often and in the process of assembling my army the Night Lords HH book hit. I'm a bit of a completist so having the 'good' Imperial Fists it made sense to collect the 'bad' Night Lords (the caveat here is obviously that these are Great Crusade armies and as such are both 'good' (or as good as they can be).
As I've said earlier this is where Batman comes in, I really liked the idea of a terrifying strike from an unknown quarter and to date my armies have been devoid of flyers so I am seizing the initiative and working on a flyer heavy Night Lords army. I've really struggled with the Night Lords rite of war (although I do feel it has its uses in smaller games) so to that end I've been looking at Angel's Wrath, however I have noticed an issue in that you are unable to take fortifications with this rite, however my work around is to include a primary and secondary detachment of Night Lords and only use the rite with the primary detachment.
So the plan is for two 20 man tacticals in Storm Eagles with a Centurian/Praetor/Consul and an apothecary in each squad. This will be backed up by two Fire Raptors and a Thunderhawk. I'll also be doing some 'add in' units - a 15 man Night Raptor unit with lightning claws and melta bombs, three 5 man Terror Squads (one with Volkite, one with heavy chain blades and the other tbc), two 6 man jetbikes squads, a Forge Lord, a few characters, 5 Castellax, a Contemptor talon and 3 Dreadclaw drop pods (the old Gothic pattern ones) and two landing pads. As you can see that's quite a sizeable army.
Best get on with it.
I've made a start on the tactical squads and building some other bits of the army. Here's my tester model for the army colour scheme:
I wanted to get a really dark blue for the marines so I chose to use P3 exile blue as my base coat over a Halfords grey primer. I then washed with drakenhof nightshade. I picked out the metals with leadbelcher and washed that with agrax earth shade. Once the blue was dry I panel painted (using layers) in kantor blue.
Pretty happy with the results so I've started pressing on with batch painting the infantry.
Over the next week I hope to get on with some more infantry (namely the first 5 man Terror Squad).
Looking forward to having more Night Lords to show off next week.
Stay Frosty

Nice work King Fluff ! I have a whole volkite Terror Squad needing some painting and no motivation at all, but that is inspiring! :^D The MkIII is an interesting choice, your first mini looks very promising!
ReplyDeleteDo you consider adding the Night Haunter to your list? <3
I will be adding Curze and Sevetar at some point but I think I'll be adding Alastor Rushal and Captain Ophion first.
DeleteThe MK3 was a choice due to the flat played for lightning effects and also as it's a Great Crusade force I wanted the majority of the infantry to be MK2 and MK3 :-)
Looking good there. Are you doing lighting on all the models?
ReplyDeleteI'm only going for lightning on terror squads, raptors and characters. Iirc the legionaries in the FW books are devoid of lightning.
DeleteSounds like a good plan. I think the lighting can look ott if overused.
DeletePretty cool so far - can't wait for the Jetbikes and Robots!
ReplyDeleteThe jetbikes are going to be special - I think you'll like them ;-)
DeleteThat's a very nice color scheme, easily replicated too! Definitely going to be watching this.
ReplyDeleteNice work. I'm looking forward to seeing a loyalist night lords army. Are you buying in to the whole winged helmets image?
ReplyDeleteYeah but in moderation - I'm reserving it for characters and Night Raptors.
DeleteVery cool. Really happy that we are going to see 3 of the Classic Dreadclaws too!
ReplyDeleteNight Lords have one of the best paint schemes of all the legions and while I don't care for their way of doing things they are wonderful to look at. Look forward to your progress.
ReplyDeleteThe dark blue looks good. In one of my test Ultramarines I got a similar result going the other way around. Base Macragge Blue - dry brush Etherium blue and wash down with Drakenhof. The result is good, but I could not use it as there was no way to do something similar for the vehicles.
I think the panel painting in layers (whilst time consuming) should prove fruitful for vehicles - although I don't think the scheme photographs overly well.
Deletelooks great.. a trick i learned painting lightning fo librarians is to use dots, instead of slashes.. go in and dot out the strike you want w a light blue, then w that pattern add more closer spaced dots to forks u want to show, then w a white, dot follow strikes you want to show, and fizzle out the forks you want to end.. looks great and saves headaches from free hand streaks
