Forge World Mortalis Progress.

Khall and I have been once more grinding through a Mortalis Monday. We have previously sprayed the Tiles with a coat of Purity seal in preparation for this stage: the oil and white spirits wash.

Due to the toxic chemicals in White Spirits, we chose to work outside. We first put a mix of 4 parts burnt umber oil paint to 1 part black oil paint onto a palette. We then add white spirits straight to the mixing palette to thin it slightly. Then we dot various spots on the tile with the oil mixture and flood it with pure white spirits. Where we want to thicken the shading we add additional thinned oil paint and keep adding pure white spirits with a detail brush to make it look realistic. Where we want to remove oil paint we add white spirits and tease it away.

We have washed a total of 4 tiles completely, but we have done the wash over the Karak stone on all tiles so we can start looking to the next stage.

Oil washes are easier to use, easier to manipulate and have better pigments than a Glaze or wash (no nasty white tide marks or chalk residue).

Next stage will be Karak stone drybrush / sponging and possibly some Ushbati bone.

Don't forget to follow us on Facebook and why not send some pictures for our Legions on parade segment.

    1. Lol. Surely not. :) Tell you what Greg, do you have the Masterclass books from Forge World? Absolute gold dust. Phil S. From the Forge World Studio who does a lot of the painting is actually one of the best model painters in the whole world and not just with GW. He has won lots of awards and his techniques on tanks are amazing.

    2. Drake,
You aren't the only person to tell me this. I'll watch ebay for those books to pop up again. I've seen both volumes for sale before! Thanks for the recommendation!

    4. I'd be all over that if I hadn't just spent a ton of money on secret weapon powders!

  2. Thank you so much for providing the step-by-step guide. You've achieved a great effect with the oil and white spirits, and now I'm keen to try it out myself. It looks just amazing - thanks!

    1. Awh Cheers Matt. Really appreciate that. Trust me, it is such an easy technique (just make sure you have a nice coat of purity seal (or similar) first and then start on one section and build yourself up. Easier than citadel washes, which funnily enough didn't work on several tiles. We had a few tiles which had mould release sweating issues, which made it so the wash just sat on top like beads. We managed to overcome it by adding a bit of washing up liquid to the wash but in the end I decided white spirits was the way to go, and don't regret that decision.
