Night Lords Rapiers

Hello Bunnies,

3rd edition heresy is on the way! I am very much looking forward to a new edition, and the first taster of this is was the Rapier kits. We were kindly sent a preview copy by Games Workshop and I had been waiting for the plastic version to add to my Night Lords so jumped at the chance to paint them up!

The kit is the usual standard for GW, that is to say great detail and little option for posing. You should be able to magnetise the kit if you're so inclined and my suggestion would be to buy the other version of the kit with the heavy bolter and grav gun and magnetise all 4 options. This is because of the back box that is added to the heavy bolter and the quad gun versions and as such these 2 would go together for magnetising and these come in 2 different boxes.

The crew for the guns come with a lot of options but no different posing options. You can add holstered bolt guns and bolt pistols, I didn't add as I felt they were a bit much for my taste and took up some of the open panel space for adding lightning.

Stay tuned for more heresy content coming in the near future!

Terror Tuesday! Horus Heresy 2.0 Night Lords - Terminator Character

 Hello Bunnies!

A small break from gaming from myself over the last couple of weeks. I had played a lot in a short space of time and needed to come up for air! The character below was one of the first models I did for the Night Lords. I made him for a small character driven campaign that I had created at my gaming club. However, as is often the way, it didn’t last all that long as others drifted away. He hasn’t made it to the tabletop much since really, as I tend to use Sev all the time! It is a useful model to have lying around though as he can be any number of characters, Preator, Centurion, or Champion.

This is now the last model that I have fully painted for the Night Lords. All together it is around 2700 points, however it doesn’t really make much of a list! As I am also stuck in list making circles with the Night Lords I haven’t really put paint to brush in a while.

This, therefore, maybe the last Terror Tuesday for a while! While that is a bit of a shame, I will still be bringing you weekly posts as will soon have 3k+ of painted Salamanders to show! I also will be touching up and finishing of some of my Sons of Horus First Company in preparation for the eventual arrival of Horus Ascended!

Happy gaming!

Terror Tuesday! Horus Heresy 2.0 Night Lords - Legion Terminators

 Hello Bunnies!

Life got in the way of last weeks Terror Tuesday but the terror returns this week! I have played another few games, each with different lists. First I tried Assault squads, Night Raptors and terror squads. Turns out it wasn’t a good list! Got butchered before turn 1 had even ended! Next up was 50 Terminators and a spartan, this time I did the butchering. Both games were against the same blood angels list who are very brutal on the charge but quite fragile.

I am ultimately struggling to settle on a list that I like and that fits with what I want to achieve in this new world of 2.0. Realistically if I were starting from scratch I would probably be using Recons and Rhinos for the Terror squads, so I suspect I will be seeing if this is a good plan or not over the coming weeks.

The 50 terminators list was a brutal deep strike and the guys below were part of that! They were built to be the anti tank of the army as I want the army to basically be infantry.

The problem I have found with the Tartarus kit is that it tends to look quite plane once painted up. They also didn’t look finished! I decided some more colour was needed. I grabbed some 3d printed legion emblems and then free handed on a bunch of Nostraman runes in red to break the blue up a bit more.

Terror Tuesday! Horus Heresy 2.0 Night Lords - Terror Squad 3

Hello Bunnies!

I’ve ended up taking a few weeks off playing with the Night Lords, due to playing a series of larger games which I could resist taking the Sons of Horus First Company too. I’m feeling the pull back to Night Lords though and have a new potential list running through my mind! More on that in the coming weeks. This week I bring to you my final Terror Squad unit (well at least for now!). This squad is very similar to the others, my next batch will add some variety into the mix!

Terror Tuesday! Horus Heresy 2.0 Night Lords - Sevatar

Hello Bunnies!

He is finished, The Prince of Crows, Lord of the Atramentar, 1st Captain of the Night Lords, Jago Sevatarion or simply Sevatar. My favourite character in the Heresy! I really enjoyed painting this model and I am really pleased with how he has come out!

He is the basis of my army lists, and for me even owning Night Lords! Although perhaps not as easy to work with for list building, I play for the story and a huge part of that for me will be always be fitting him in my lists! I am really pleased to finally have him painted at the head of my legion!

Terror Tuesday! Horus Heresy 2.0 Night Lords - List evolution

Hello Bunnies!

I’ve been getting in some good games recently. Mostly against Dark Angels, which is nice and thematic! I have made a couple changes to my original list following some pretty crushing defeats! Below are some thoughts on what I am currently running and a couple pictures on dreads that have nothing to do with the list!

As a quick reminder here is the original 3k list;

Sevatar
10 Contekar Terminators
Terror Squad 10 man
Terror Squad 10 man
Terror Squad 10 man
14 Assault Space Marines
5 Tartaros Terminators
5 Tartaros Terminators
5 Tartaros Terminators
5 Tartaros Terminators
Storm Eagle Assault Gunship

It struggled in several places, the scoring was the Assault marines but I found trying to keep them safe a waste of points. The Storm Eagle with Sev and the Contekar was being mostly useless being to late to the game to make any impact or being intercepted out of the sky. I was enjoying the deep striking terminators though. I decided to lean a bit more into this and get more terminators in! I have tried out getting in some cheap tactical squads in and running Sev in a Land Raider but the tactical squads were shot to bits and again did nothing for the points. The Land Raider wasn’t quite as resilient as I had hoped and I had to duck and cover with Sev as he was the only model left alive before my terminators arrived. With all this in mind here is the list that I will be now having a go with;

Sevatar
12 Contekar
10 Tartaros Terminators
10 Tartaros Terminators
10 Contekar
10 Contekar
Spartan Assault Tank

This is a bit of ambitious list! Leaving 40 Terminators in reserve and just the Spartan on the table. I did want to avoid using a Spartan but the other options that I have just don’t quite seem to be cutting it. Lets see if it works! The deep strike will be devastating though and it fits in with how I think Sev would go to battle. I will be giving this list a few games in the coming weeks. Keeping that Spartan alive will be the key or perhaps just driving it straight into the lines of the enemy and causing as much fear as possible will be the way to go!

The Prince of Crows will come visiting next week!

Happy gaming!

Terror Tuesday! - Horus Heresy 2.0 Night Lords

 Hello Bunnies!

Well a massively unexcepted announcement passed last week at the Nova Open, Horus Ascendend! What a model! This has thrown some of my plans into disarray! I played a Sons of Horus First Company army through all of 1.0 and had planned given that army a bit of a rest for 2.0 and focusing on the Night Lords and Salamanders. But that one model has sent shock waves through my plans!! So I will now potentially be spending some time getting my SoH First Company up to a standard ready to receive their new leader!

In the mean time I have several more units to show off for the Night Lords. Today I bring you my contemptor dread armed with Kheres and Chain fist. Aimed at a bit of a mixed role but mostly anti tank. I loved painting this model, it has been one of my favourites.

I have had another couple of games with the Night Lords to mixed success. I have smashed a army, been smashed by another and then piecemealed off the board in another 2 games. I am generally think my list just isn’t quite cutting it. I have another 2 games this week and be trying out a new version. The one I proposed in my list preview a couple weeks back, still isn’t possible for me to field yet as I am waiting on plastic Land Raider and haven’t built the tactical marines to replace the assualt marines yet. I think I may try and get the tacticals built before Wednesday so I can start to get an idea of whether the improve the army or not. I may also give a Pride of the Legion list ago. If I do I will share with you all in the coming weeks.

Happy Gaming!

Terror Tuesday! Horus Heresy Night Lords - Terror Squad 2

 Hello Bunnies!

Another Tuesday is upon us and with it comes more terror!! This week is Terror Squad number 2. They are performing well and I am really enjoying the new infiltrate rules. I do need to learn to be a bit more sensible with this though and work out just how quickly I want them to die!

I will be adding some more Terror Marines to the army in time, as now I am infiltrating them and they can go up to 15 in squad size, I think it will be really cool! I would like to kit some out with rota cannons and some more with chainglaives as that will also look cool!

Happy gaming!

Terror Tuesday! Horus Heresy Night Lords - Leviathan

Hello Bunnies!

Here is my Night Lord Leviathan! It hasn’t seen huge amounts of action yet as I am working on my list that I showed last week. I am really happy with how it has come out though and it will definitely see some good time on the tabletop, particularly in larger games!

I had a lot of fun painting this model! The nice open spaces were good for adding plenty of lightning and the bones and skin elements added a lot of cool extras to play with!

I am currently cautious around the use of dreads in 2.0 as they seem to be pretty powerful without many counters, so I am waiting to see how this settles down across the edition. Up next week we will be having a look at some more Terror Marines!

Happy gaming!

Terror Tuesday! Horus Heresy Night Lords - 3k list building

Hello Bunnies!

I have now had a several games with my Night Lords and have been playing around with various list ideas. I have an idea of what I’m trying to achieve but it hasn’t quite worked. This is due in part to some of the new rules but also me trying to avoid certain things. Version 1 of the list is below, it is 3k roughly, but some Prey Sight needs to be added to a few units and load outs aren’t quite right, due to early days on Quartermaster. It is very much based around Sev’s warlord trait, allowing Terminators to deep strike and Terror Assualt.

Sevatar

10 Contekar Terminators: Dissident; 9 Contekar Terminators

Terror Squad: Headsman (chainglaive; volkite charger); 9 Executioners; 8 × volkite charger; flamer; prey sight

Terror Squad: Headsman (chainglaive; volkite charger); 9 Executioners; 8 × volkite charger; flamer; prey sight

Terror Squad: Headsman (lightning claw; volkite charger); 9 Executioners; 9 × volkite charger; prey sight

14 Assault Space Marines: Assault Sergeant (artificer armour; pair of lightning claws); 13 Assault Space Marines

5 Tartaros Terminators: Sergeant (pair of lightning claws; grenade harness); 4 Terminators; 4 × magna combi-weapon; 2 × power fist; 2 × thunder hammer

5 Tartaros Terminators: Sergeant (pair of lightning claws; grenade harness); 4 Terminators; 4 × magna combi-weapon; power fist; chainfist; 2 × thunder hammer

5 Tartaros Terminators: Sergeant (combi-melta; lightning claw; pair of lightning claws; grenade harness); 4 Tartaros Terminators; 4 × magna combi-weapon; power fist; chainfist; 2 × thunder hammer

5 Tartaros Terminators: Tartaros Sergeant (combi-melta; lightning claw; grenade harness); 4 Terminators; 4 × magna combi-weapon; power fist; chainfist; 2 × thunder hammer

Storm Eagle Assault Gunship: twin-linked lascannon

Night Fighting in affect for the first 2 turns guaranteed and 50/50 chance for turn 3. All characters gain Fear (1) for free. The termies deep strike and cause pinning checks for everyone in 6 inches of them, hopefully covering a large amount of your opponents army. This pinning check is then, fingers crossed, taken at -2 leadership (-1 for fear, -1 for night time). The termies can then charge and destroy stuff. The Terror marines infiltrate and try to kill off some stuff. Assault marines hide outside of 24” night time restriction to stay alive and then jump and grab an objective. Contekar and Sev go in the Storm Eagle and then kill stuff….hopefully.

Problem 1, scoring! Only one scoring unit in the list, it hasn’t been a big problem in the games I’ve played so far, as I’ve tried to kill off the opponents. In some games it hasn’t mattered as denial units have been able to claim some points. My thinking is perhaps to change the Assault squad to 2 tactical squads in rhinos. Doubles the scoring and won’t add many more points. My other thoughts are around heralds and legion standards to add 2 scoring units in.

Problem 2, Where does Sev go? Currently he is in the Storm Eagle but this hasn’t been great. He can’t be part of the deep strike, ruling that option out. I really just want to walk him across the table with a big squad of Contekar, but unfortunately Precision shot is easily accessed and warlords have no way of being able to avoid this. Which could lead to him being shot off the board before he gets anywhere. He needs to be kept safe, and that means being inside armour of some kind. The Storm Eagle is susceptible to intercepter fire and reserve roles. It also means Sev and unit aren’t doing anything until turn 3 at the earliest and it’s nearly a third of the armies points. It has worked out ok in a couple games but in others he has been too late to change the outcome. I’m trying to avoid the obvious Spartan for him and the solution might come in with the above plan of using legion standards to add scoring. Changing one of the terminator squads to a command squad instead of the Contekar, and giving them a dedicated Land Raider carrier, I know much much different to a Spartan! I would then possibly look to add in the Explorator Land Raider to help with the needing to rely heavily on a reserve role for the termies, which would also double as a transport for another herald and something else.

Problem 3, I really want the general idea to work and I’m trying to fit a lot of stuff in! I guess a lot of the list planning is working out how much scoring is needed or whether my plan of just killing everything will work!!

Version 2 of the list in now in the works and I have some games coming up in the next week to see how it plays out. I will share an update once I’ve tried out some of the other ideas. If you have any thoughts I would love to hear them! Lastly here is a sneak peak of next weeks Terror Tuesday;

Terror Tuesday! Horus Heresy Night Lords - Terror Squad 1

 Hello Bunnies!

Welcome to the second instalment of Terror Tuesday! This week We are taking a look at the first of my 3 Terror Squads that I have completed. They are kitting out for murder with Volkites and a flamer. The Headsman gets a Chainglaive. I have given each Executioner a single lightning claw claw attached to one fist to represent the Combat blade that they had in Heresy 1.0. Of course this is now a Chainsword in 2.0, which is a little annoying from a modelling perspective but I like the look and won’t be changing it!

These guys often make up the core of my force, they are really good! The big change for them is that they can no longer score, which does leave me very light on scoring units. I have another 30 legion specific torso ready to make more, most likely with rotor cannons for pinning. I do also fancy a 10 man squad with chainglaives, as I think it will look cool! However adding more is on hold until GW get the MarkIVs back in stock!

Happy flaying everyone!

Terror Tuesday! Horus Heresy Night Lords - Konrad Curze

 Hello Bunnies!

Welcome to Terror Tuesday! A new weekly feature dedicated to my Night Lords. I will be showing off the units I have painted, lists, tactics, and progress on new units. I have been working away on these guys for a long time, perhaps a year prior to Forgeworlds Book 9 being released. Sevatar is my favourite character from the fluff and mostly the driving force behind me collecting Night Lords, but I really enjoy how they play on the tabletop and even more so with the release of Heresy 2.0.

This week we are jumping in with the King of Terrors himself Konrad Curze.

A great model to paint, I had a lot of fun doing so, I didn’t add any lightning to him as it didn’t feel quite right for him to have it, he is already scary enough! His trim is painted in a brass rather than the silver I used on everyone else to give him that extra special look.

When I complete a new model from scratch I will add a painting guide, incase you’re wondering though the blue is achieved with Greenstuff Worlds Colourshift Colbolt Blue.

Oddly I find him hard to get in my lists. I haven’t fully decided what unit he wants to be his bodyguard, I will explore this further in a future post, after I’ve been able to field him in a few more games!

Happy flaying everyone!

Andy
