Preparing for a Warhammer World Event

Hi All,

Today I wanted to post up about the Horus Heresy Doubles tournament that I’m attending this weekend; it’s my first Warhammer World gaming event that I’ve been to, and I wanted to talk about what I’ve been doing to prepare for it and hopefully promote some conversation in the comments section about others who have been to these sort of events to make sure I’ve not missed anything!

I will (of course!) be taking my Iron Warriors with me for this, and have press-ganged a friend who is a Death Guard player into coming with me. I think the bitter and fatalistic nature of the two legions would make them natural allies, unafraid to get climb down into the muck to get the job done instead of polishing their armour like Fulgrim’s pretty boys. We decided on a few factors when planning our lists; we know that the missions are going to be Maelstrom of War and there will be a heavy focus on objectives so to that end we wanted a healthy number of solid scoring units. We also knew that there would be the possibility of facing off against a Primarch (or even two!) so we wanted a couple of units that could handle themselves in a scrap. This had to be balanced against the need for some long ranged support, all the while trying to avoid being “Those Guys” who turn up with 3 Medusas and 3 Phosphex Quad Mortars each. We’re hopeful that we’ve struck the balance to keep our armies fun to play against, but I shan’t be posting our lists up as I think my teammate might kill me!

The next thing to think about was logistics. I’m quite fortunate that a daytrip to Warhammer World is achievable; however, it makes for a long day out. Doing the journey two days on the trot would require a lot of driving and wasn’t really feasible, so my teammate and I have booked rooms at a local hotel to make life easier. I’ve been told that the parking at these events is normally fine, however, we’ve still decided to try and arrive in plenty of time.

Finally, we needed to decide what to bring with us for the event itself. It seems obvious, but I’ve taken the time to sort out a 40k Rulebook, the Legiones Astartes army list, the Legions book, and even a copy of the 40k FAQ. In addition to this, we’ll be bringing two sets of dice, templates and measuring tapes (mainly to prevent squabbling between my teammate and I!). I’m not sure whether they’ll be providing objective markers for the event, so we’ll be taking some of those as well.

So all in all, we’re feeling pretty prepared for the event. We’re under no illusions that we’ve got a chance of winning, but it should be a really good weekend with the opportunity to play against some varied and interesting lists. Let me know if you’re going along, and if you should see a grumpy-looking Iron Warrior player hanging around with a Death Guard player, feel free to say hello!

I'm sure we'll be doing a debrief of the weekend as I know a few of the Bunnies are attending. In my next post, I'll put up some pictures of my army so far and talk about the direction I'm planning on taking with my Iron Warriors!

Cheers!

  1. Good luck to you Ikthelion.

They don't provide Objective markers, but they may provide tactical objective cards (which are like gold dust). It would be interesting to see if they have been updated to include Custodes and Sisters.

You Bunnies all meeting up in the evening for a meal and drinks?

  3. Good luck. As for practicalities, some bottled water and a few headache pills taped to them stowed in your bag, you'll be gaming so hard you'll forget to hydrate, so the inevitable dehydration headache can be averted, drink the water and down the pills if need be. Also a Snickers/Banana or something to keep blood sugars up, keep you motivated, agile and mind clear. Oh, and comfortable shoes. Eat breakfast, a substantial one at the hotel before setting off.

Sounds like old age problems, but they are surprisingly common for all ages. Have an excellent day!

    1. Thanks for the pointers Siph - We normally take some bottled water, but performance-enhancing foods like Snickers is a good shout!

    2. That's some really good advise - only thing I'd add is: Bring a litte tube of superglue. There is always a little bit of battledamage on the models. And if not - even better!

    3. I second this, superglue is a must have.

  4. I was planning to go to this event but my partner had to pull out. It would have been interesting if we faced off against you since I was taking my loyalist death guard and he, his loyal iron warriors. Maybe next time.
    Good luck
