Restarting my Emperor's Children - A pride in painting!

Hey Guys

We have had some beautiful Legions on Parade, over the last few months, with gorgeous paint schemes, showing a real example to the community of the talent out there and the pride in their models. So, recently I have been looking at my projects and in particular the way I have painted the 3rd Legion. I favour a more realistic painting style which has natural lighting, gritty weathering and chipping etc. I am in no way an exceptional painter but I do feel my work is nice enough to share with the community. However, sometimes I look back at my models and know in my heart I can do better. I have had just such a case with my Emperor's Children. I am unhappy with the look and feel of my legion and don't feel they match the beautiful artwork from the Betrayal book:

In Betrayal the Emperor's Children armour is metallic and the gold quite subdued. My purple is non-reflective and very vibrant, while my gold is garish - almost unpalatable. As such I have been trialling some paint schemes today looking for one which ticks all the boxes:
1. Quick
2. Easy
3. Repeatable
4. Metallic
5. Close to the source material
Here is a picture of my favourite trial model (forgive me the use of MKVII armour lol):

What do you think? I think it is fairly close to the source material. I will be trialling some golds tomorrow, which I will show on the weekly progress report, and then get ready to batch produce!

I would also like to have a go at repositioning Fulgrim into a more heroic pose and less battle-centric, so stay tuned for that!

  1. It is a very nice purple brother. Are you going to re-paint the Legionnaires you have or get new ones?

    1. I will salvage what I can. I dont really mind starting again though. When I first started the legion there were no EC specific bits except shoulder pads. I have added bits and rejigged bits for a long time now and sometimes it is just best to start again :)

  3. Looks great! Are you painting purple over a metallic base, or did you pick up a metallic purple from somewhere?

    1. Really simple:
      1. Spray army painter platemail
      2. Wash with even coats of Druchii Violet until happy (I did 5)
      3. Profit!

I am going to mix 4 pots of Druchii together (I have found that sometimes the GW paints can have different results from pot to pot).

  4. Looking great! Very similar to my guys, the main reason I picked them was the fact I had an ancient pot of amethyst purple to use up! (17yrs old and still going strong!) looks just the ticket
Keep up the great work, I love this blog

    2. Roughly 1500pts at the minute including Fulgrim, Rylanor, Phoenix guard etc but I've just caved in and ordered the large mk4 tactical set! That damn metallic purple is addictive! I'm also working on Iron Hands and Salamanders to go along side my large Raven Guard force haha can't get enough of that sweet sweet resin!

  5. Hey Khall,

I wanted to offer my .02 here, which probably isn't even worth the .02 ;) I personally loved your past scheme, and I have come to realize that Forgeworld's scheme is not always spot on. I personally believe their Sons of Horus scheme is far too dark from what is represented in the books as kind of a Garish seafoam green (mine are much more Seafoam than FW).

Personally when I think of EC, I definitely think Garish pretty boys, Bright and Flamboyant even. Very clean armor in almost pristine condition even in the midst of a fight.

There are also a lot of canon conflicts regarding armor throughout the legions. In Galaxy in Flames (I Think), the moderati of the Dies Irae remarks about looking down at the Death Guard in the trenches of Istvaan and their armor is slate grey, uncoated ceramite. Yet everyone paints them as white.

That being said I am very interested to see where you take these. When I get my EC started I will be stealing your old scheme since you are no longer using it :)
