Rogal Dorn; the Finale

Hi all,

After a slow couple of weeks trying to work on the cloak (and eventually succeeding), I've managed to finish off the rest of Dorn and his scenic base:

Over the week leading up to our Weekly Progress Report post I managed to finish off the rest of the armour and managed to find some time to work on Rogal's head and start the work on his gaming base so that he is ready to arrive on the battle field in all of his glory. I'm really pleased with how he has turned out - it was quite intimidating and took me a while as a result but definitely worth the effort.

As mentioned before, I changed the recipe for the cloak - rather than going from a purple base I started red instead as I couldn't get the blend to work and decided to just stick with what I knew which made things a lot easier and meant I could focus on improving my edge highlighting on the armour instead.

For reference, if you want to replicate what I have done and I believe this is the same way that GW recommend painting Custodians using Citadel paints, the colours are as follows:

Gold armour:
  1. Retributor Armour (base)
  2. Riekland Fleshshade (shade)
  3. Auric Armour Gold (layer)
  4. Liberator Gold (highlight)
  5. Stormhost Silver (ex. highlight)
Red detailing (cloak, Storms Teeth casing):
  1. Mephiston Red (base)
  2. Agrax Earthshade (shade)
  3. Mephiston Red (layer)
  4. Evil Suns Scarlet (highlight)
  5. Wild Rider Red (ex. highlight)
Bolter grip and tabard detailing:
  1. Zandri Dust (base)
  2. Agrax Earthshade (shade)
  3. Ushabti Bone (layer/highlight)
Bolter casing and armour seals:
  1. Abbadon Black (base)
  2. Eshin Grey (highlight)
Exposed cables, gun barrel, etc.:
  1. Leadbelcher (base)
  2. Nuln Oil (shade)
  3. Stormhost Silver (highlight)
Skin:
  1. Bugmans Glow (base)
  2. Riekland Fleshshade (shade)
  3. Cadian Fleshtone (layer)
  4. Kislev Flesh (highlight)
Hair
  1. Eshin Grey (base)
  2. Nuln Oil (shade)
  3. White Scar (layer -> highlight)
Base
  1. Administratum Grey (dry)
  2. Ulthuan Grey (dry)
Next job in the queue is my Mechanicum again but I think I will need to sort out a picture of my entire Imperial Fists legion as Rogal is now complete and we haven't seen them all assembled in one place before now have we?

Until next time!

  2. Nice work. Your starker approach to the skin and hair leaves him looking much more badass, and much less like Regis Philbin.

    1. Thank you! I was a bit concerned that he might look a little bit too cartoon-like. I'm glad you like him :)

  3. That looks great and probably the recipe I’ll use for my Custodes, I always use the reds as you’ve detailed, looks very nice.

    1. Thank you. In fact it is the recipe use in the painting Custodes video that GW did. Just be careful not to overdo the last highlights with Stormhost Silver.

Yeah, it's the way I normally do my reds too but I thought I might be clever and attempt to replicate what was done on Dorn as advertised on the Forge World website (the shading looked like a deep purple blending into the red) - sometimes I think it is best to stick to what you know :p

    1. Cheers! I think you'll enjoy painting him when you get round to it - there are so many details and it was an absolute pleasure to paint him despite my cloak woes!

    2. Haha he may be a while, I ordered Horus at the same time to lead a Primaris Luna Wolf army as a quick pick up and play army for friends to use. Cawl has been a naughty Lagos....
