Today I want to talk about my next Legion Project for 2017 - The Thousand Sons.
I always loved the egyptian feel of the XVth Legion, even before the heresy series came out. A few years ago I read 'A Thousand Sons' and it was awesome - traitors who actually tried to do the right thing? A Primarch sentenced to censure because he wanted to warn the Emperor of Horus' treachery? And of course the Thousand Sons themselves - always walking a path between damnation and duty, always trying to preserve knowledge.
So here we are - years later, we just got new plastic 40k Thousand Sons (who make an excellent bitz box for sergeants and veterans), and Inferno is almost here. Oh, and we got a plastic Magnus for the Siege of Terra - was there any better time to start them?!
For the colour scheme I'll follow the metallic red scheme from Forgeworld (as in the picture above) - actually the same recipe that I used for my Brass Scorpion. Metallic basecoat - lighter metallic zenithals, shadows with a green clear, and several coats of Angron Red. After that, some silver edge highlightes. Unlike with my Word Bearers, I'll try to keep the glossy look - need to experiment with some satin varnish for my weathering and transfers!
I already painted a Consul Praevian in 2015 - I won't repaint him (as he is converted from a few different sources, including plastic and finecast) but he will stand proud alongside the legion's robots :)
Let's take a look at my currently planned starting force - of course this may change a bit in February, as I'll start to fully plan and build my Thousand Sons once I got my hands on Inferno!
HQ:
- Ahriman
- Legion Praevian with 2 Cataphract Automata
Troops:
- Legion Tactical Veterans with Rhino (10)
- Legion Tactical Veterans with Rhino (10)
- Legion Tartarus Terminators, Scarab Occult (5-10)
Elite:
- Destroyer Squad, jump-packs (10)
- Contemptor Mortis Dreadnought
- 3 Rapier
Fast Attack:
- 2 Javelins
Heavy Support:
- Heavy Support Squad (5)
My army will be based upon the First Fellowship - Ahriman's guys, so mostly veterans and terminators, and mostly shooty stuff. I also want to include some psychic controlled robots (painted in blue and gold, as they are automatas without souls), aswell as Destroyers (wearing Kaltaran Crests to mark them as walking dead - you know, it's not healthy to be a Destroyer!). And of course, I'll paint up the big guy himself - twice. Once for Prospero, and once as Daemon Primarch for the Siege of Terra!
Hope you enjoyed this little teaser post - if there is anything you want to see for my Thousand Sons - let me know in the comments below :)
Regards,
Lady Atia
EDIT:
Some concept artworks from Mark Bedford :)
Need a pyro librarian I think. Hahah. But it looks like a great start! I can't wait for inferno to drop before I start my army. I love the idea as praevians for an hq choice. I'm hoping they get their own battle automaton since I think it was kalophis who commanded 8 of them charging out of a stormbird with guns blazing. I can only hope to do the same one day. Hahah.
ReplyDeleteThe Praevian is supposed to be from the Pyrae Cult :)
DeleteAnd yep - would be awesome to do Kalophis and his robots :P - aswell as the Legio Astorum Warlord lol ^^
The warlord is a dream for me. But would be amazing!
DeleteWell, atleast I already have my legio astorum warhound ^.^
DeleteCan't wait to see what inferno brings to the table for them and for you to bring them to life! :)
ReplyDeleteThanks :)
DeleteAnd yep, can't wait for Inferno :D
I'd like to see some interesting big stuff. Tanks and super heavies would be awesome.
ReplyDeleteAlso, your reaver finished would be great ;)
Big stuff sounds good ;)
DeleteI'll mostly wait for Inferno to decide on the specifics though - but truth be told, can't wait to paint and weather a tank again :D
The Reaver is still shelved 'till I get my titan mojo back :<
Hey Lady Atia, I too am just starting my Thousand Sons (for 30k and 40k) I'd love to see you make the captains of the fellowships. Your army can still be first fellowship but having the others would be so cool!
ReplyDeleteOh, so basically the Rehati (and maybe also Ignis for the legions' techmarines :P?)! Yeah, would like to do that :)
DeleteThis is going to be good :D
ReplyDeleteI hope so =)
DeleteNice. When you say "starting force", how much more do you think you are going to add.
ReplyDeleteHehe - I plan to finish the starting force next year (I also have to do 20 more Word Bearers, and I have some Blood Bowl teams on my table :P). Hopefully the paint scheme will be easily replicable so I can add units whenever I want later on (similiar to Drake's Death Guard!).
DeleteForgeworld are masters in adding additional fluff and artworks that make you paint another unit for your legion - even if you originally thought that one wouldn't fit well with them. And there are the legion specific units and character models :)
As VF I can't wait to see how this turns out! You know.... So I can sink my teeth into something!
ReplyDeleteThe colour chime seems so cool! I love your conversion... See some old Tomb King pieces.... Completely opposite of the VF... Which is why I am so excited to get my hands on Inferno! I think I missed it up top but are you planning on using MKIII or MKIV for the majority of your TS? Will you be making this force more gritty then the tradition pristine TS that GW and FW have Ben producing? I would like to see a different style of Ahriman..... Well I know he is pretty plain Jane until he re-armours himself and gets his iconic helmet.
Yep, I used parts of one of their lych priests for the conversion :)
DeleteThe new plastic 1k sons kits have some awesome bitz - crests, tabards, swords, staffs .... <3
I'll probably still stick to "pristine" TS, but I want to do some muddy boots and weathering for the tanks :)
I love the new plastics!! Your Praetorian looks awesome! I love the plastics so much I'm tempted to do a mini force of HH Thousand Sons with AMON!!!! I would love to convert a larger ten life sorcerer who I argue shares top spot with Ahriman throughout the Heresy and Scouring.... I would love to do a pristine Amon with his glorious helmet and tweak out his armour for some PINAZZ!! A mini force of 1500pts... need inferno to see the points and force organization...
DeleteThat being said Miss Atia I think it would be deadly if you including Ahriman's rival Amon.
Amon is Mangus' Equerry. I would love to do him :)
DeleteJust not sure *when* he got the armour and helmet he used in the Ahriman series :/
I do not know either. I just know Ahriman took Amon's helmet and armour and forged it onto himself after he was found out by Amon.
DeleteI hope we see some upgrade weapons packs for both the VF and TA at the Open Day, or at least some previews :-)
ReplyDeleteOh yeah! That said, I'm already in love with the Scarab-Occults' chain-khopeshs from GW :D
DeleteYes they are gorgeous! Like I said... tempting.... I want to read Inferno to see if the Occult have the khopesh. Will you kit bash the new occult kits with plastic/resin Tartaros?
DeleteThis depends on what FW will do with them. I saw them painted up in pre-heresy colours and they worked quite fine as they are tbh! They are the Legions first fellowship terminators for a reason. That said, FW *did* pre-heresy artworks years ago (when Inferno was scheduled as third book), one of them was for the Scarab Occult - I will add some pictures of them to my post :)
DeleteWow way I see the concept artwork. Such an amazing time for the hobby! It is incredible what the artists and sculptors are able to produce now!
DeleteYep! Especially when they draw from 1st/2nd edition <3
DeleteBlown away... I can't wait for the Battle Bunnies coverage of the open day
DeleteI love ancient History. I like 30k. I like the colour red. I like the Scarab Occult's character as emotionless and (implicitly) ruthless. I think I may go 1k Sons now!
ReplyDelete:D
DeleteAlso - psychic robots!
And psychic titans if my notes are correct. I've been patiently saving my Warlord Titan for artwork of Canis Vertex so I can replicate that glorious monument of pyrae vanity.
DeleteI used Forge World's recipe and thought the gloss took away too much detail. Spraying it with Testor's Dullcote balanced the gloss to a satin sheen that I felt looks awesome.

The Terminator is pictured glossy then here is after spraying Dullcote. https://instagram.com/p/BNZvKHVBUN-/
DeleteHey - they look great!
DeleteDid you used the old tamiya clear red, or the new FW angron clear red?
Thanks! I used Angron Red on a few and Clear Red on others when my airbrush was on the fritz. The Tamiya Red definitely gives a much more rich red hue while the Angron Red is a little more orange. But the Angron Red is by far easier to paint over. The Tamiya is a huge pain to paint on.
