As you may have seen last week, I will be starting a new legion project this year - the World Eaters! Oh yes, the angry men in white and blue (hidden underneath all the gore) charging across the battlefield, hacking apart anything that stands in their way.
If you recall, I did a post in December about how I would do the legion and I have somewhat changed my mind based off the comments I received. In short...
DROP PODS!!!
I've wanted to do a drop pod themed army for quite a while and I think it suits the World Eaters quite nicely. To give you an idea what I am going for, here is my proposed army list (~3k points):
HQs:
- Kharn the Bloody (RoW: Orbital Assault)
- Legion Centurion (Primus Medicae - a.k.a. Kargos)
- Legion Tactical Squad (10 men, chain axes, sergeant has a power weapon, drop pod)
- Legion Tactical Squad (10 men, chain axes, sergeant has a power weapon, drop pod)
- Legion Tactical Squad (10 men, chain axes, sergeant has a power weapon, drop pod)
- Legion Tactical Squad (10 men, chain axes, sergeant has a power weapon, drop pod)
- Veteran Tactical Squad (8 men, chain axes, sergeant has a power weapon, drop pod)
- Legion Terminator Squad (10 men, mixture of pairs of lightning claws, chain fists and power fists)
- Red Butchers (10 men, pairs of power axes, sergeant has twin chain fists)
Fast Attack:
- Anvillus Pattern Dreadclaw Drop Pod
Heavy Support:
- Leviathan Siege Dreadnought (claw and siege drill, heavy flamers, dreadnought drop pod)
Lord of War:
- Angron
The idea is that Angron will go in the Anvillus by himself (as per Betrayer as he used to get strapped into his own drop pod - who would want to share a pod with him when the nail bite after all!) and that leaves me with 6 other units in drop pods and 2 deep striking terminator armoured units - 4 pods arrive turn 1, 3 pods and the terminators arrive (hopefully) soon after. If I wish to play a 2k game, I just need to drop Angron, the Anvillus and the Red Butchers and for 2.5k I can either drop Angron and the Anvillus or the Red Butchers!
I hope to have this ready for Throne of Skulls in March which might be a bit ambitious but what the hell, it will be a good challenge! What do you guys think?
Until next time,
Hector Cephas
That's going to be awesome! Are the chainaxes on the marines extras or replacing the bolter?
ReplyDeleteMy only suggestion would be to ditch the normal terminators and get the red butchers a kharybdis. Not only will it keep them alive longer but they can be in assault on turn 2 tearing stuff up!
The axes are replacing the bolters as I really don't think them having bolters makes sense to be honest - even mechanics-wise it doesn't really help as I can't assault after.
DeleteAs for the Kharybdis, I could do that though for now I think I will stick with the regular terminators. I think they'd look rather cool anyway but it could be a nice extension later on. Some contemptors in drop pods could be cool too but that could be a bit much.
Looking forward to seeing you crank this out!
ReplyDeleteCheers Liam! I can't wait to play the army :D
DeleteLove the theme (I was one of the ones who suggested drop pods haha, so I love it). How are you going to keep from getting tables first turn though with everyone coming in by pod?
ReplyDeleteTabled****
DeleteTo be honest, I haven't given it much thought. I'm going for a cool list rather than a competitive one. What would you suggest?
DeleteMaybe a spartan or something hearty for those red butchers? Those guys greatly benefit from a way to get into close combat fast. Just a thought, carry on mate!
DeleteIt's game turn not player turn. So provided half the pods and the contents don't die he shouldn't have to worry
DeleteSo excited to see world eaters. I'm working on adding more drop pods too. Age of sigmar had my army a couple weeks ago, you can see a drop pod painted like the picture you used

Very ambitious project, but one question : How the red butchers will come on the battlefield ?
ReplyDeleteDeep strike as confered by the Orbital Assault Rite of War. They'll be vulnerable but I am more worried by the other squads dying than them :)
Deletegood luck on your fool hardly adventure my good man!
ReplyDeleteWas reading an interesting post on dakka the other day, about whether Orbital assault armies automatically lose the game on turn one if they go second. Given that the rules dictate that a player with no models on the table at the end of any player turn loses outright. Needless to say it descended into a toxic flamefest between a couple of individuals. Any thoughts on how it could impact your force provision here?
ReplyDeleteI'm pretty sure it's at the end of the game turn as opposed to the player turn otherwise yes, I would lose if I lost the initiative. I'll check my rulebook later but that feels utterly wrong (no offense meant), I'd seriously question the rules if it is at the end of the player turn...
DeleteOn the plus side though - my opponent could pass their turn, win the game by default and laugh about my bad luck over a couple drinks in Bugmans :P
Haha yeah. My games are only ever with my closest associates and friends, I likely wouldn't be playing against anyone that wanted to use a caveat like that against me.
DeleteAnd no offence taken, I merely stalked the thread in question but it got me thinking about the subject and I know somebody quoted a page reference.
It is definitely game turn and not player turn! Sudden death conditions in the rule book!
Delete100's of drop pod tourney lists would be invalidated if it was player turn.
DeleteI'm loving the theme but my main concern would that a manoeuvrable enemy would be able to get away from your troops. Maybe a couple of Lightnings deployed from the Conqueror to fit with the theme?
If you follow the rules as it is written in the latest red book the victory condition states that if you have no model on the table at any moment of the game, your opponent wins... And i agree with you this rule doesn't make any sense :(
DeleteConcerning the list the them is very good and will be awesome to watch but maybe I would put some melta bombs on characters to compensate the lack of av.
Stay bloody :p
Interesting it does say this in the red book. Ah well ignoring it! The main rule book version of the rule is much better! Orbital assault list are already difficult enough without that thrown in!
