Atia's Thousand Sons - Contemptor-Mortis Dreadnought

Howdy Guys and Girls :)

Today I want to share my freshly painted Thousand Sons Contemptor-Mortis - the first of many sons of Prospero. Hope you enjoy - as usual, first fluff and than some background about the painting techniques!

Ushapt-Osiron Nicasekh Khili

Contemptor-Mortis of the Thousand Sons, Guardian of the House of the Jackal

Ushapt-Osiron Khili was one of the nine Dreadnoughts which slept within the walls of the House of the Jackal during the Burning of Prospero - serving there as ritual protector. In life he had been a commander of one of the Legion's heavy support cabals, grievly wounded during the Turning of the Golden Apostles.

During the Battle for Tizca Khili and his dreadnought brethren counter-attacked the Space Wolve's heavy armour units. It's said that his fate is unknown, as he was last seen fighting against [REDACTED BY THE INQUISITION].

Note: Kheres-Achea pattern Assaultcannon. Modified for the use of 'Asphyx Shells' - loaded with psycho-reactive toxin of unknown origins.

Note: The ruins of Tizca - all is dust.

Painting the Thousand Sons

It's basically the same technique I used for my Brass Scorpion:

- Metallic basecoat (Iron Hands Steel, using my airbrush)

- Zenithal highlights (Ironbreaker and after that Runefang Steel, using my airbrush)

- Pre-Shading using thinned down Calth Blue

- Several Layers of Angron Red, using my airbrush

- Edges are done with Stormhost Silver - I also did some chipping on the legs and added a bit of weathering

The white was done using one of Duncan's video guides:

Hope you enjoyed my post today - next on the to-do list is Ahriman himself :)

Regards,
Lady Atia

  1. Looks great! How do you do the gold trim bits? Do you paint those on last with a brush? Otherwise I can't imagine how you airbrush the panels red without dirtying up the trim. I'm struggling with this problem while painting my Imperial Knight.

    1. Yeah, I do the red part first and than the trim using a brush. The airbrush layers should be thinn enough (as they are clear paints), so there is no problem with "extra paint on the trim". You could also paint the panels first, than use some masking tape for the panels and airbrush the trim, but that wouldn't work with the 1k sons styled trim ^^

  3. Does Inferno have an image of Canis Vertex? Trying to see a color scheme for my Warlord Titan. don't worry, not asking to post an image, just asking for confirmation. Thanks

    1. Darn. Was really hoping for an inspirational piece instead of having to make my own.

    2. Darian look at the stuff from the Siege of Vraks, Canis Vertex is from Legio Astorum and they were active in that conflict.

    3. I like painting as close to the source material as possible in order to maintain canonicity in recreating events or units from the storyline. So I was hoping for an image of CV to attempt actually recreating the Titan instead of just making a Warlord from the same Legio. Already have the Legio Atarus decals so I'm just gonna stick with that one then.

  4. That's a lovely metallic red, are you getting some Castellax Achea psychic robot automata for the 1K Sons too?

  5. This looks so good! The silver edge highlights I would never think to do, but they make the model really stunning.

    1. Thanks 😉

That sad, some say the wolves were more misguided fools 😜

    2. Wolves: misinformed.
      Sons: misguided
Hope that marble is practice for your Xiphon btw.

  8. Great effect on the red, I've also been doing thousand sons and tried using the angron red over the same technique you've described, however, it took around twelve coats! I switched to two coats of angron red and then tamiya clear red, it's a touch darker but still achieves the desired effect. Does it take you as many coats or do you do something different?

    1. Glad you like it :)

How much did you thinn it down? 50:50 should be enough to get smooth coats :)

  9. I did thin it down but it took around 11-12 coats to get a consistent finish, that was too much for me for the amount of infantry I'm doing hence the change in method.
