Index: Chaos and Imperium 2, Drake's opinion

Hi all

I have got the task of sharing my opinion of the new books, and my personal opinion of where the Hobby is going.

They immediately feel very different to the old Codex format. They feel to me as if they are the last 30% of an old 40k Codex. The old pages upon pages of background, colour schemes, mini stories, iconography and source images are gone. Instead this feels as if it is a one page summary of the army and onto the army list.

The art work is rich and beautifully presented, with lots of historic pieces.
The book is all about easy access to the relevant rules, with lots of (see page xx) references which is helpful. I can imagine an iBook enhanced copy would be very good on an iPad.

I do like the army roster option is good, but the time is nigh for a Games Workshop supported official one. Mainly because the point option for a unit is not under the unit option now, but instead in its own column on another page. Simple but different.

The page layouts are very well laid out and easy to jump from list to list.

Opinion:
I loved the old Codex format. I loved how you had the options on top of one another or contained under a unit entry, but with a change to the way lists can be made in the new 8th ed, Matched play (points system) has been made a bit less easy to prepare in my opinion, as I was very used to the old way of "I want a Space Marine Squad so I will go to that page and add up what I want" system.
I am sad that the richness about the army and character (this force is like this because of their dread history and this chapter here hates this enemy) of the lesser known forces such as sub forces of that faction (sons of decay, Lords of pleasure etc), has now just vanished. I don't know if it will appear elsewhere, or if it is just the books I have.
I think these books are just mainly designed to make your forces from 7th edition compatible with 8th as on first glance there are no new options in here. Those will probably be appearing in white Dwarf first and then annually in Chapter approved. Looking at the way the Space Marines have changed so dramatically in the last month, I can now imagine the same with the rest of the 7th ed range.
I personally think digital is the only way to go now to keep on top with the hurricane of changes, but these books are a must to play in 8tg edition and are very easy to enable you play to the new list creation options.

Good stuff.

Looking forward to the digital army list creator, I just hope they add the Forge World options in there too (come on GW it's easy).

  1. These are just a stop gap to make every force usable in 8th, codex's are still coming :)

    1. Totally agree. The codecies that will come out later will resemble AOS Battletomes, with the fluff in the front half and the stats and rules in the back half.

    2. Well that is good! I do like the ol' Fluff.

  3. Disappointing to see Thousand Sons have lost access to Havocs. The last codex supplements had noted the Legion as being short on tanks, etc and Havoc Squads have always seem thematic to me.

Anyway I guess mine are off for a stint in the freezer prior to being reconfigured as a Rubric squad.

    1. I was thinking the same but will hold onto mine the actual codex drops.

  4. I hate Codexes with a passion. This to me is a step towards the ultimate. A single book, with the RULES and ALL Army lists, which is updated annually, with PDF updates for new models.

Then all fluff can be in fluff books, and thus never outdated.

  5. This is basically Ravening Hoards to old fantasy players, the Codex will be back!

    1. Or the Codex Imperialis+Codex Army Lists (Black Codex) to even older 40K Players.

    2. 3rd Edition was the first 40k I played. I remember 2nd in the White Dwarfs but was too young to play, my favourite ever issue is still the release of the Vyper. The artwork was just epic plus the battle report had an Swooping Hawk Exarch leading the Eldar which wasn't strictly legal but was awesome!

    3. Maeglin, this concept isn't new. they used to put army lists in White dwarf. And I mean whole army lists, they released SM, Squats, Eldar, IG. They then reprinted the stuff in an single source books, first one was the Compendium, then they released the compilation. They had organic rules before with Errata in white dwarf, they just took a massive step to getting back there.

The reason I have rage for coders is they don't add much between editions. I have like four or five ork codexes, all basically the same book for the 10 pages of army list. Fluff books and a free army PDF would be best.

  6. Great review. I hope GW include the FW units as well. Hopefully that would prompt them to do a 30k one as it seems to be the next logicalal step....

  7. Nice review. I am a primarily HH person but starting to get into this stuff (for reading, don't play) and ordered the Dark Imperium Novel by Haley. You think the content is this boxed set is worth getting?

  8. Ah good, there's the legion rules. It covered all nine, right? Or did it do Red Corsairs and Crimson Slaughter too?

    1. Just Thousand Sons and Death Guard's unit restrictions, no fancy rules at present except in unit entries I think?

  10. I don't suppose that the CSM Rhinos have their HH era turrets as an option?
