Forge World Cityscape: Isstvan 3 board (Istvaan 3) Day 1

Ok, so Day 1....

Today started with a 9:30am trip to the local Halfords. Here we picked up some adhesion primer and some Matt Black spray. Adhesion primer will ensure that the undercoat will not peel off of the boards and spoil all our hard work.

Of course, as with all Forge World products, we started by giving all 6 boards a solid and rigorous clean...in Drakes bath. We used a lot of Fairy washing up liquid (my hands are so soft right now) and a firm brush. A firm brush is used for 2 reasons. First, to ensure that you can get into hard to reach places and second, it actually creates very shallow scratches on the surface (great for helping primer stick!)

Once we were happy that any mould release agents had been thoroughly banished we stood the boards on towels to let them dry. I went and bought a sandwich...it was truly disgraceful...

At this point I should mention that Carth turned up with the promise 'I am not leaving until 10 men are finished!' - to find out if he was successful, check on his post! His World Eaters look fantastic...I can't believe they are the first models he has painted!

Me and Drake then continued with the gruelling task of making loads of buildings. Now I have to admit - I am pretty poor when it comes to random! So when trying to make buildings that didn't all look identical...I sucked!! Praise the Omnisiah then for Drake. We soon fell into a successful rhythm of me clipping and trimming and him glueing.

We are using 3 of the GW Imperial Sector packs to create our buildings. We started with Mechanicum (hence the Omnisiah quip above) buildings for the Generator Sector as seen below.

This building is cool...we couldn't decide why there would be a hatch in the floor though lol

We have then moved on to the Concourse Sector. I have gone for a Church-like theme for this building...its long and we have started to model a beautiful veranda. Can really imagine a priest standing here and addressing his subjects.

This black building is a salvage job from an old project of Drakes. It will integrate effortlessly as a huge building on one of our Shattered Plaza's.

Not bad for a first day really. Would have had more done but Drake has a social life so we had to take a 3 hour break. How very selfish ;) I would have carried on all through the night if I didn't have work on the morrow. Can't wait until Monday to do some more. Will update you again on Monday night! Please feel free to comment below.

Cheers

Current Projects

Hi all

As you can see, our Heresy projects are starting to move on quite nicely. I have had a few weeks off painting as life is a little hectic at the moment. I will be posting an Emperors Children update this week however I have shelved them for the moment for 2 reasons.

1. As you can see from Drakes most recent post, I have bought 6 cityfight boards from Forge World with my annual bonus. They are spectacular. With such amazing scenery comes days of laboring to ensure we can paint them to the standard deserved. I will be working on these, with Drake, most of easter weekend. (Happy Easter BTW)

I will do a photo diary to post up here so that you can see the evolution from start to finish. Anyone out there considering getting these boards? Do it....now! I mean it!

2. Again, relating to previous posts, our 40k campaign system 'The Karrus Sector' is starting soon and I need a force. I suffer from a nasty case of 'OOOOO SHINY!' which ensures that none of my projects ever get finished (however I dont feel this way with the ECs which I looooove!)

Well this ends today! I am going back to finish off the last bits to an Imperial Guard force I started a year ago. So expect updates on:
Heavy Weapon teams
Sanctioned Psyker Squad - some nice conversions coming!
Command Squads
Ratling Sniper Squad
Special Weapon Teams
Ogryn Squad - may use Warhammer Ogres and convert!

Drake will be providing tank and air support as it is a joint project.

As I have mentioned before, I am a fluffy player so do not expect trough-filled sardine can lists or plasma deepstrike spam! Expect a varied and well rounded list that will play the way I see Imperial Guard and humanity in the 40k millenium, as a victim.

Once these are complete I will finish off the rest of my EC. Cant wait! So here is my short term, upto date project list:
Imperial Guard - end of April
Cityboard - end of April
Emperors Children - end of June - to gaming standard (no weathering/chipping)
Eldar - rumour has it that these are being updated next after Tau. If its a good release I will be all over the Space Elves like a hobo on chicken!

After these it will only be Heresy era projects as I have more faith and love for them than the current GW 40k standard.

I am hoping to see more time on here, with many more posts, in the coming months. Please keep checking back and feel free to comment! We like feedback...as long as its not faceless internet bullying...then we collectively cry! ;)

Forge World's Realm of Battle Cityscape: Received

Khall Sithis has bought the Battle Bunnies a lovely 6x4 Forge World Realm of Battle Cityscape. Over the next two months we will all be pitching in to paint this to a worthy standard.

But at first here are some pictures of the items unboxed, with a few Pre-Heresy Death Guard having a scout to get used to this new environ.

First impressions:
The board is so playable, the models seem to sit comfortably everywhere. Only the large Shattered Plaza tile has a bit of warping which we will need to rectify underneath. The streets may be slightly Narrow for the Titans and Super Heavy vehicles, so we will tackle that bridge when we come to it. The detail is gorgeous, with scattered clips, Boltguns and crates everywhere.

Keep watching this space and we will post updates regularly.

Pre-Heresy Iron Hands: The Iron Tenth

Hi guys, after much badgering and cajoling I've finally found some time to post up here.

My major additions to our heresy forces is the Iron Hands, I love how they are pretty much a power armoured version of the mechanicum and how their whole ethos strives towards perfection without going over the top like other legions I won't mention.

I will post up a full list when they get released but rest assured its going to be sickening.

Pre-Heresy Death Guard: Squad 1 Work In Progress

It's been a while and so I thought I would show my Work In Progress 1st Squad of Death Guard.

I am now totally in love with Lahriman Medium. I can't get enough of the stuff. Just by adding 40-50 % of this stuff to a mix increases your painting skill to a new level.

Once again these models have been painted using the Official Forge World Painting guide.

For this first batch I washed and scrubbed the Resin thoroughly with a Toothbrush and Fairy washing up liquid in warm water (don't be lazy always do this hobbyists).

Then I decided to actually keep the models on the resin sprues for the next bit. I sprayed all 30 Legionnaires after trimming them thoroughly. Because of the location of the sprue pour in tag (top of the waist on leg and arm socket on torso) you can easily do this on the models. This way I can spray them easily and methodically before gluing them onto the bases. Some hobbyists may have realised already that spraying a black base white and then having to back over them with blacks is an absolute nightmare.

After gluing the legs on to the base I gave them a wash of 50/50 mix of Seraphim Sepia and Lahmian Medium. I actually just mixed the two pots together and divided them back. Ate east this way I have no inconsistencies in colour later. Now here is the important bit: do not go mad or thick with this colour! It is a once over wash which is intended to be thin! Think about it why would you put Lahriman in otherwise.

When this was done I Highlighted with White Scar mixed with Lahmian Medium onto the armour plates. Add more Lahriman to blend in the white to the wash. Also try to have it so the bottom of every armour plate is grimier.

After doing this I painted the ribbing with a Abaddon black mixed with a little Lahriman, before gluing the Torso on and painting them fully.

At this stage I attacked the Rivets on the Mk4 legs and the trims on the Mk3 and collar of the Mk2 plates. This was done by Basecoating straight over white with Warlock Bronze, trust me it is a very dark colour, no need for Abaddon Black. I then highlighted with Runelord Brass mixed with a tiny bit of Lahriman medium to smooth the transition. All in all I am very happy how this turns out.

Next on to the arms. As the Death Guard had such a high mortality and Casualty rate in the Great Crusade I decided to get some Bionic arms in there to add a touch of character to the squad.
The other observation I will make right now is; they really didn't plan mk3 arms and hands very well in my opinion. Boltguns just do not fit comfortably at all because of the brass banding. You can see this even on Some of Blessed Forge World's models on their online store (Autocannon Heavy weapons squad having had the lower part stripped off). But once again; Forge World make my world go round. A few minor points like this really does not put me off them.

Getting the pose just right with the guns is essential. When holding them together keep wiggling and adjusting your view of the model so you can see where he is aiming etc. there is nothing more rubbish looking than a model aiming his gun too high. This first squad is Space Marine Mk3 heavy (not the more dynamic Legion Mk3). So I have 3 Mk3 models just running forward, and this is where you can add subtle differences to make them their own model. I have given one a red gun (some Forge World Death Guard have red and some have plain black so this is fine IMOP), each has a different barrel attachment and every head is facing in a different direction.

Which brings me onto the next bit; Head location and facing. Weirdly you may need to put a small dab of Greenstuff into the neck hole as otherwise they look a bit too hunched. When ready do the wiggle and set technique til you are happy. I personally strike a pose with feet and arms in the same position as the model, roar a battle cry and get my head comfortable before replicating the pose on the model.

Then we go onto shoulder pads. I Undercoated Chaos Black before airbrushing on the Basecoat of Castellan Green. I then did all the Brass trim before Bluetacking the shoulder pads onto the model. Then I liberally coated with a Highlight of 50/50 mix of Castellan Green and Elysian Green, before a final Highlight with Elysian Green. At first I was not sure how bright it should be, I then found this http://www.forgeworld.co.uk/New_Stuff/LEGION_PLASMA_CANNON_SET.html and realised I was right on the money. At this point my WIP Legionaires only have one model with shoulder pads done but the rest will be finished shortly.

So still left to do is; weathering the legs and armour joints, painting the eyes, chipping effects with a sponge, Transfers, Bases (which as a gaming group we will communally decide how to have every Base later) and Matt Varnishing.

Horus Heresy Project

The Horus Heresy, to me, is more iconic than anything else in the sci-fi genre. Treachery is one of the most thought-provoking and emotional story lines that exist and the HH has it in abundance. I am not going to go discuss the story with too much detail, I presume if you found this site, you probably have a sound understanding.

I have been a fan of Warhammer 40,000 for donkeys years. It has and will always be one of the constants in my life and I have been lucky enough to share the stories with my big bro (Drake Seta). We have been discussing the Primarch's and the Heresy era since the age of 8 or so, so around 20 years. When The Horus Heresy: The Betrayal came out We both pretty much geekgasmed! We knew that the Battle Bunnies would be getting involved...but how can a small gaming club do this epic story justice? Well I will tell you below ;)

As an aside, I just want to say how impressed I am with the Betrayal book. The lavish artwork and design is spectacular. A lot of love has gone into this book and it truly shows. In my opinion, Forge World are masters of their trade.

So, The Betrayal book focuses around four legions, The Death Guard, The World Eaters, The Sons of Horus and The Emperors Children. Originally I came up with the idea that four bunnies would throw money into a pot, buy a cubic feth-ton of Forge Worlds pre-heresy resin crack and paint them in The Betrayal colours. We soon found that people were saying 'I will do this legion' or 'that legion' and in the end we all just decided to do one legion each...far more simple. We all got the legions we wanted (except Drake who didn't originally want any of the starting four legions) divided the goods equally and set to work.

We all have individual posts to discuss how we are getting on with our own projects so please make sure you have a look. We are all painting the legions exactly as described on the FW guide and some of them are looking incredible.

The aim is that we will complete 3000pts for our respective legion and then we will play through the campaign (the battle reports will be available for perusal in one form or other). We will have titans, Imperial Guard, mechanicum contingents as well as the legions...its going to be Lectio Devinitatal (biblical lol) so please check back regularly and see our updates, or subscribe!

What good would having these beautiful miniatures be without some sensational scenery? Well check back soon because Drake has been working on a huge Zone Mortalis board - I cannot stress to you how great this product is both in looks and gaming standard - and I will be buying a 6x4 FW cityfight board in the coming weeks (we already have a gazillion imperial sectors to make some badass buildings) and I will both diarise our progress on these projects for you.

If you have any questions, please email us or just put them in the comments section :)

Forge World Limited edition miniature 2013. Open day 2013.

Hello everyone.

It's almost time for the Forge World Open day. The day where the new limited edition miniature of the year is unveiled. Last year there was the Imperial enforcer and the Warhammer Skin Wolf. I can only speculate on what this might be this year but there are a few things I would like to see. 2 years ago I believe they bought out the Boarding Marine. This was kind of a teaser for the Horus Heresy if you look back now. Book 13 of Imperial Armour is rumoured to be Dark Eldar. So could we expect a Denzien of Commoragh? Who knows. But as the Horus Heresy is doing so well I would think it would be silly of them to not release a special edition Character.

Pre-Heresy Lucius, Kharn or Typhon?
Maybe a Character that is missing from the Isstvan 3 Campaign? Little Horus? Torgaddon?
Maybe a ltd edition Jetbike or similar?

All I know is 5 Bunnies are going and we will be reporting and posting pictures as soon as possible on this Blog while we are there.

So check us out on the 7th of April

And who knows . . . Fulgrim may be out . . .

Drake Seta.

Pre-Heresy Death Guard: Where to start?

So Legion has been chosen. Tick.
Colour scheme and technique chosen. Tick.
Base 750 pts chosen. Tick.

Now for my favourite bit; Purchasing.

So first I need 35 Legionnaires from Forge World. As Death Guard don't make much use of MK4 armour and have MK2 in abundance; I will need to buy a big mix of Armour from the beginning. I don't want entire squads of the same Armour plate, so I will make a mega purchase at the beginning and do my 750 line Legionnaires in one long train. I also need to plan to have 5 Legion Support squad Flamers at some point soon and so will have to mix up armour plates now. So I need 40 Astartes.
I will also need 30 Boltguns. For these I will also aim for the older marks. I will get 2 Packs of Phobos pattern and one Pack of Umbra. I have also spoken to some Bunnies and agreed to swap some of these for their Umbra Ferrox and Tigris pattern Boltguns to mix it up.
I will also need 5 Autocannons. Finally a Devestator Sergeant can have a Heavy Weapon!!
At this stage I have also made a decision not to do Legion specific Pauldrons; as in my opinion (and what goes with the fluff) Mortarion and the Death Guard despise gilding and ornamentation. So instead I have decided to also get the Death Guard Transfers.
I will also be eventually sporting Nuncio-Voxs for my Death Guard too. So I will buy a pack of them too. The Sergeant's crested helms will not be featured in my army either. This is still down to the Death Guards' hatred for pomp and decorations. Instead my Sergeants will be sporting a black stripe (as seen in the Horus Heresy book 1: Betrayal).

15 mk2 Legionnaires
15 mk3 Legionnaires
10 mk2 Legionnaires
20 Phobos Boltguns
10 Umbra Boltguns
5 Autocannons
Death Guard Transfers
Mk2 Command sprue
2 Handed Death Shroud scythe from eBay

I will do the Order with another Bunny and try to get as many of those multi packs of 30 Legionnaires as possible too to keep the cost down.

For now I am not thinking about the Siege Breaker. But I do have some ideas.

I can't wait to get them started now. I will post a step by step guide as I paint them.

The Red Angel Descends

Oh yes, you heard right. I am now in possession of the 12th Primarch; Angron.

Well I was gifted it a few days ago by my fellow Bunnies but just would like to let you guys know that he will be on my to do list very very soon after finishing the units I am currently working on right now.

The model looks sublime and can not wait to get started on it. But alas I know my patience must hold. Damn!! As with my other posts with other units, look forward to picture updates when they arise :)

Pre-Heresy World Eaters

Hey There :D

Just taking a moment to explain my contributions here. I am currently working on Pre-Heresy World Eaters. This is the army I have chosen from the first book "Betrayal". This army appealed to me mainly because of the Primarch Angron, who I think is a badass in my eyes :D I also loved the colour/paint scheme that applies to this army (see details below)

In regards to myself, I am in fact the newest Battle Bunny, and this is actually my first Warhammer project. When I was much younger I collected Lord Of The Rings miniatures for quite some time but never moved on to 40k. Have always been tempted to do it but never found the opportunity. After getting a better paid job and having a Bunny as a manager, it was only a matter of time before I started!! Up to now I have acquired the start of my list and am massively enjoying my time :) I am a little bit of a perectionist, and am prone to making slipups so I know I will put my best efforts into this army and future armies I engage with.

In regards to the paint scheme I follow, I use the Forge World Painting Guide which is available to download from their website. This consists of:

Body:
1. Undercoat with Skull White
spray;
2. Wash with a mix of 25%
Drakenhof Nightshade, 25% Nuln
Oil, 25% Lahmian Medium and
25% water;
3. Lightly sponge Ceramite White
mixed with a little Lahmian
Medium to raised surfaces.
Shoulder Pads/Backpack:
1. Undercoat with Chaos Black
spray;
2. Basecoat with Kantor Blue;
3. Highlight with Teclis Blue mixed
with a little Lahmian Medium.
4. Wash with Body stage 2 mix above.
Brass:
1. Basecoat with Sycorax Bronze;
2. Roughly highlight with 50/50 Sycorax Bronze and Runefang Steel
3. Wash with Body stage 2 mix above.

This painting scheme is one of the few Pre-Heresy guides that are very accurate (there have been reviews that some schemes are not realistic to their images) but the World Eater guide is great.

Here is my proposed list for my army, ambitious I think but let me know what you think:

HQ:
Legion Praetor - 185
Paragon Blade, Plasma Pistol, Iron Halo, Jump Pack, Artificier Armour, Frag and Krak grenades

Elites:
4 Rampagers - 240
---Rampager Champion--- Caedere Weapon (no other weapon) Chainaxe, Artificier Armour, Frag and Krak grenades

4 Legion Terminators - 266
---Legion Terminator Sergeant--- Terminator Armour, Lightning Claws

3 Legion Contemptor Dreadnoughts - 525
3x Twin-Linked Heavy Bolter, 3x Dreadnought Close Combat Weapon, Smoke Launchers, Searchlight

Legion Apothecary - 65
Bolt Pistol, Chainsword, Combi-Plasma, Artificier Armour, Frag and Krak grenades, Narthecium

Troops:

9 Assault Legionaire - 300
---Legionaire Assault Sergeant--- Pair of Lightning Claws, Artificier Armour, Frag and Krak grenades, Jump Packs

14 Legionaire - 275
---Legionaire Sergeant--- Bolt pistol, Plasma pistol, Artificier Armour, Frag and Krak grenades

Fast Attack:

3 Sky Hunter Legionaire - 190
---Sky Hunter Legionaire Sergeant--- Plasma Pistol, Power Weapon, Power Armour, Frag and Krak grenades, Space Marine Bike

Heavy Support:

Legion Spartan Assault Tank - 295
2x Sponson Quad Lascannons, Hull Mounted Twin Linked Heavy Bolter, Searchlight, Smoke Launchers, Extra Armour

Other:

Primarch Angron - 400
Armour Of Mars, Gore Father and Gore Child, The Spite Furnace, Frag grenades, The Butcher's Nails

Total Value - 2741 Points

Heres a start to my first unit:

It is not fully completed yet but I shall update on my next post the finished product, not long to go!!!

Hope this gives you a little insight into myself and look forward to posting many posts for you awesome Bunny viewers :D

Pre-Heresy Death Guard colour scheme

Hello

I am the Battle Bunny who will be collecting the Death Guard for our Pre-Heresy Campaign. Out of the four Legions it was a difficult choice between World Eaters and the Death Guard for me. Luckily my decision was made for me as one our fellow Bunnies chose the Legion of Angron.

We all realise that a Horus Heresy army would need to be done in style and to a high standard, especially due to the cost of the miniatures from Forge World (which are exceptional). I myself have been painting since the second edition of Warhammer 40k, and so have some experience. Luckily Forge World released a painting guide for the first four Legions at Isstvan 3, and so the standard was already set for me.

Armour:
1. Undercoat with Skull White spray;
2. Wash with 50/50 mix of Seraphim Sepia and Lahmian Medium;
3. Highlight with White Scar mixed with Lahmian Medium.
Green:
1. Basecoat with Castellan Green;
2. Highlight with 50/50 mix of
Castellan Green and Elysian Green;
3. Highlight with Elysian Green.
Brass:
1. Basecoat with Warlock Bronze;
2. Highlight with Runelord Brass.

Next was the size of force that we would be aiming for. To legally field the Death Guard Primarch Mortarion I would need to have a 2000 pt force. He is thankfully not out yet and so will be doing the meat of my Legion first.

Firstly: Death Guard strike me as a Legion who get on with it; "We don't have a Rhino?" Shrug "let's walk" and I cannot imagine them being very agile or quick with the blade either. Fluff wise (Battle Bunnies love fluff) the standard line Legionnaire does not have a Chainsword, but instead relies on combat blade and Bolter, so my Tactical squads will only be equipped with Boltguns. I have also decided to completely forgo the use of Assault Legionnaires in my force as well as Jetbikes, skimmers and generally anything fast. A distinct lack of new Plates of armour would also add to this look. I also cannot see them having much in the way of Lascannons and high tech level weaponry, but instead relying on more crude equipment like Autocannons and Missile Launchers.

So below is my starting list that I will be adding to over the next few months.

My 750 pt list:
Death Guard (Space Marine Legion)

HQ - 125
Legion Centurion - Siege Breaker (125)
Volkite Serpenta; chainsword; Combi-Plasma gun; Melta-bombs; Artificier Armour, Frag and krak grenades.

Troops - 435
19 Legionaire (275)
Legionaire Sergeant (Power Scythe, Artificier armour; frag grenades; krak grenades).

9 Legionaire (160)
Legionaire Sergeant (Artificier armour; frag grenades; krak grenades).

Heavy Support - 185
4 Heavy Support Legionaire (185)
Space Marine Sergeant (Autocannon; Artificier armour; frag grenades; krak grenades; Augury Scanner; Melta-bombs (Sgt)); 4× Autocannon.

Keep looking and I will update you on my progress

Pre-Heresy Emperors Children

How can perfection fall so far from grace? Into depravity and unhinged self-gratification?

I am the Battle Bunny who will collecting the glorious Emperors Children legion of the Adeptus Astartes. I have wanted to do a EC project since being introduced to Fulgrim in the magnificent Black Library novel of the same name.  As a character, it is very hard not to be drawn into his story and feel sorrow for the tragedy that unfolds. When the Horus Heresy: Betrayal book was released I knew that he would be mine...

I have been an avid modeller and gamer, for nigh on 20 years, yet this Horus Heresy project is my first prolonged exposure to Forge World miniatures. I have worked on some 40k Death Guard before, but never anything to this extent. As mentioned on Drake Seta's post, the style and standard of Forge World miniatures means that you really need to bring your A game when painting them to ensure you do them justice. I will be following the painting guide as described on the FW website. Top tip: ensure you wash your resin thoroughly ;)

Purple:
1. Basecoat with Xereus Purple;
2. Wash with Druchii Violet;
3. Layer with thinned 50/50 mix of
Xereus Purple and Genestealer
Purple;
4. Final layer with 25/75 mix of
Xereus Purple and Genestealer
Purple.
Gold:
1. Basecoat with Balthasar Gold;
2. Wash with Agrax Earthshade;
3. Highlight with Gehenna’s Gold;
4. Glaze with extremely thinned
Druchii Violet.
White:
1. Basecoat with Ceramite White;
2. Glaze with thinned Guilliman
Blue;
3. Highlight with White Scar.

So lets look at how I have planned the first part of my project...

I decided to start by looking at the size of the army I would be aiming towards. Eventually I would like a 3000pt, infantry heavy list, including The Phoenician. Of course, I couldn't just rush in at such a high point value, I would need to start a little bit lower and slowly add to the force. So I set to work designing a 750pt list from the ace Legion List.

To me the Emperors Children seem very methodical in their approach to war and therefore I decided on some bolter heavy tactical legionnaire squads to make up the majority of my force. I also love the pre-heresy assault marine miniatures and could definitely see the 'perfect swordsman' style of the legion come out in just such a squad. In the Betrayal book it states the the ECs didn't use a great deal of MK3 armour so my miniatures will represent this also.

My starting army is an infantry heavy, fluffy list. These are not and will not be part of  tournaments unless the Battle Bunnies host our own in the future (no spam or cheese lists).

Take a look at my starting list (the Paragon Blade rules are brutal!):

Legion Praetor
Iron Halo
Paragon Blade - yeah boi!
Plasma Pistol - everything is better with plasma (right Dark Angels???!)

Tactical Legionnaires
1 sergeant - artificier armour coz he is badass
19 legionnaires - nuncio vox and legion vexilla (for fearless)

Assault Legionnaires
1 sergeant - plasma pistol - artificier armour
9 assault legionnaires - 2x plasma pistols...see a theme? Lol

Thats 30 of the baddest dudes in the universe all ready to fight and die for either The Emperor or Horus. I wonder if they know the guy next to them may be a traitor...either way the sky will be stained red with the blood of my foes...

For Horus the true master of mankind!

Keep looking and I will update you on my progress
