Flickering Flame markers for the Horus Heresy (and 40k)

Bunny-fans

I have spent 15 mins doing this. Let's make our wrecked vehicles look better than simply tipped over or turret-less. Let us blow the fortresses of the imperium to pieces and see flames below out from within! Let us see battlefields not just as static gaming boards but unfolding stories of greatness!

Let there be fire! Let the galaxy burn!!!

Take 1 flickering Tea light and cover top with superglue or hot glue gun glue. Available at Tescos.

Get a bag of pillow stuffing (250g bag of pillow stuffing from eBay delivered in 2 days for £2.50 - 250g is about the size of my head and tightly packed), take out any unsitely bits and keep it clumped together. Then stick it down on top of the candle. Then add some more glue and fluff to the candle sides (otherwise looks poop).

Spray from several angles nice and sparingly. This firms them up too!

Switch on.

Game.

Coming soon: Phosphex bomb markers. Subscribe guys and follow us on Facebook too.

Forge World Cityscape: Isstvan 3 (Istvaan 3) day 8. Cityscape finished.

Forge World Cityscape Finished. That is right. Khall and I have finally completed our Cityfight / Isstvan 3 board.

The final board sections were finished today. Using the AK streaking kit I streaked the Generatorum sector to give it a dirt and grime running look on its earthy grey foundations.

The weathering powder has been done subtlety and just finishes off the model. We used: MIG gulf war sand, Rubble dust, industrial city dirt (lots) and of the FW range Dark earth and light earth.

Below are each of our completed sectors:

And below are some landscape pics.

Might Scorch damage this one day soon. Was greyed up with Fortress grey to soften the white.

It has been a pleasure to work on this board. As soon as Blake Spence gets some more done we will double its size I think. So now on to the buildings which will sit on top.

Keep following us on Twitter and Facebook.

Forge World Cityscape: Fixing issues

I have sorted my issues: my XP have gone up. Which is nice.

White Spirits have saved the day:
Getting regular kitchen roll or blue roll I added a splash of white spirits to the tissue, before carefully rubbing it over the areas I was unhappy with in circular motions. This lifts small surface layers of paint off and reduces the nasty tide marks.

I also sorted the wash on the white statue base.

Forge World Cityscape: Isstvan 3 (Istvaan 3) day 7

Day 7

Ok. Sometimes things go good. Sometimes things go bad. Mixture of both tonight.

Good: Firstly we washed the roads. We decided against spray coating a gloss spray first because we wanted them a little darker. We mixed Abbadon black, Agrax Earthshade, Lahriman and 2 waters together. We then tackled a square at a time. Khall would brush it on with a 3xTank brush size brush taking care not to let it make tide marks. I would follow up with some kitchen or blue roll and dab remove indiscriminately. This left an effect we were really happy with.

Before and after.

Bad: Disaster struck. I decided I wanted to try the Purity seal then wash method. I tried to dab remove some excess and it left us with a horrible look :( putting this down to never having done it before.

We added more water and two drops of fairy washing up liquid to the concoction and carried on on the other half. This turned out a lot better. Fairy works.

I will need to fix this foundation going forwards. Ugghhh. Might try White Spirits. Any tips anyone?

Next foundation was better: but we had not enough water and dried it with the hair drier a bit close.

Good: Third foundation looked a lot better. We covered it nice and quick with the wash.

Then dried from a height with a hair drier. Taking care not to move the liquid around as it tides.

Bad: Then we had some time free so we decided to start the second wash on a board we were happy with. We decided to try the watered down Karak Stone and Steel Legion Drab sand wash, where you are meant to cover sections and dab off excess. We were not too happy with how it turned out (incompetence maybe)

Good: We got our Weathering powders out. MIG: City rubble, Gulf sand and various others as well as the Forge World Black soot, light earth and dark earth. (The two splotches left of the Storm drain are the wash).

This project is taking a long time now. All that is left to do now is to complete the weathering, fix The screw ups, drybrush the craters a lighter grey, do a few bits of field detritus then onto the buildings proper. Can't wait to game on it.

Forge World Cityscape: Isstvan 3 (Istvaan 3) day 6

Today I had the urge to paint my first building. As noted previously we assembled all buildings and undercoated them with Chaos Black spray. We then spray highlighted the buildings with a dusting of skull white from a high angle. For the Red Mechanicum building we decided to use Khorne Red as the first layer of colour. We then painted the iconography / details in different metallic colours.

Metal sections such as vents were done from warplock bronze to Leadbelcher.
Brass areas were also done from Warplock to  Runelord brass.
We also used gold leaf rub n buff on the side gold cog symbol.

We then washed it with our magic mix of Abaddon black, Lahriman medium and Agrax Earthshade topped up with water. This was covered over the entire piece and dried with the help of a hair drier. Then we added fire damage with black soot weathering powder to various collapsed sections and windows.
After this chipping effect was sponged on the corners which were likely to suffer from battle damage and wear and tear (Abaddon black mixed with Mechanicum standard Grey).

I may add some more various weathering powders to the ruin before sealing it.

More soon.

Forge World Cityscape: Isstvan 3 board (Istvaan 3) Day 5

Ok then. Vegas over; Khall and I are back onto the Forge World Cityscape boards. Now we have got to a stage where we are mainly doing small details and rubble. This is because we have already completed the main concrete bases and roads in previous posts (all but the final wash and weathering powders; which we have to do later).

So firstly I decided to take on the "Generic" burnt out vehicles. Khall and I are not fans of fighting on a battlefield which always has a third party destroyed vehicle on it. So I could either go with the pure rusted destroyed rhino look such as on the Citadel Battlescape. But in my opinion a vehicle in that condition has been rusting for a long long time. I want to achieve a Just burnt out vehicle look. One in which the paint has totally been removed from heat damage.

So using these pictures as inspiration I set out to achieve this look.

Lots of whites, greys and sepias.

So to start I painted a lightly watered down Skavenblight dinge onto the vehicle, so it has a streaky look to the burnt effect.

I then did a layering drybrush of 50:50 of Administratum grey and Baneblade brown. This I did in patches and streaks across the wreck.

Another layering drybrush of Administratum was done on top of the previous areas.

Then streaks of watered down Balor Brown were added (these can be rough as subsequent stages will reel it back).

Then I liberally sponged 66:33 Skull white with a Lahriman medium onto the wreck. This is the stage I have to leave it at now. I did want to do the smoke and flame blackening but that will have to be done with Forge World's Black soot weathering powder after the board has been washed.

I will also be blending the white in with the Balor a lot more as well as adding some more Seraphim Sepia. This will be concluded in the future.

The same techniques were used on the Laser destroyer Wreck.

The other big bit we have worked on is the Utility access area for our Cityscapes pipe work and ducting. The big brass housing on the left was sponged with Sotek Green in the low areas and around the bolts. It was then sponged up with Runelord Brass. Nice and easy and great look.
The main pipes running through the main valve were painted with Warplock Bronze before having a light sponging of Runelord Brass to make it look weathered.

Otherwise we did a lot (and I mean a lot) of crates, Boltguns, Barrels and utility pouches all over the board. This was very time consuming.

So here we are with our first six boards:

We Still have a lot of details to do, and like with all things: you start noticing things you don't like and want to improve. We will be back on it again tomorrow night and hopefully bring it all but up to the Gloss spray stage.
