Horus Heresy: World Eaters Preview

Hi all,

Time for another legion preview and this time it is about the World Eaters.

Legion Trait

Right out of the gate, this is a pretty snacky and unsurprising trait for a legion like the World Eaters - all models gain +1 attacks on the charge in addition to any other bonuses even if they would otherwise not get a charge bonus (i.e. a disordered charge). This is great as it really empathises their berserker-like combat preference - charge and smack things around with chain axes and move onto the next combat... Blood for the Primarch! Skulls for the 12th Legion!

Advanced reaction

I like this trait. Being able to pull off a charge in your enemy's turn is a pretty awesome - much like how the Fists can do it now thanks to their advanced reaction but in this case it is in reaction to being shot at. I like it, it feels more like an enemy has shot them, they've got their blood up (gain a feel no pain against the shooting attack) and gone "right, that's it, they die next!". Enemies of the World Eaters beware, shooting them up close is only going to hasten your demise!

Warlord Traits

These traits are pretty awesome. Blood Hunger basically turns your warlord into a vampire (gain wounds on killing models in melee with it - is capped at 6 so you can't go too crazy!) the downside is that the warlord and his unit has to charge the nearest enemy unit within 12 inches - a sacrifice I would be willing to take, just need to be wary of cunning parking of enemy rhinos near to your warlord!

Cloaked in Blood is pretty sweet, a -2 modifier to any non world eater units locked in combat with your warlord. This may be useful for getting the enemy to flee before you so you can mow them down with a sweeping advance!

The Butchers Claws, this is one that I would be tempted to take - basically grants the warlord and his unit get the +1 attack bonus from the legion trait (via charging), they also gain +1 strength for the turn. Ouch, not only are you hitting more, you are hitting harder too!

Rites of War

These Rites are both pretty familiar, I don't think anything has really changed with either of these (but feel free to correct me!) - Berserker Assault makes you run and charge further, grants you additional leadership for pinning tests (this can be pretty useful as while it wasn't necessarily something you would see a whole lot of, it would ruin your fun if you are trying to run across the board but can't due to being pinned) and predator tank squadrons can be taken as fast attack (I think this is new). Rampagers become troop choices in this Rite (though they do not gain Line) The downside of this is that you can't ally (Who would want to!? The others are weaklings!) and you have to charge the nearest enemy within 12 inches if you can see them (pairs up nicely with the Blood Hunger warlord trait).

The Crimson Path is an interesting one: while Berserker Assault is about getting into the enemy faster, Crimson Path is about being able to take more punishment instead (DPS vs. Tank). All World Eater Infantry units can ignore the first wound they suffer in each phase before armour saves and World Eater independent characters gain It Will Not Die so they can slowly heal themselves back up a bit too. Rampagers also become scoring here (they gain Line but are not a troops choice). The downsides are pretty familiar - you need to take more infantry than not and only one heavy support choice.

Armoury

Some interesting upgrades here but I will start with what is familiar to us first. We can still swap our chainswords for chainaxes for free so that's a minor but yet great army-wide buff in melee on it's own. Cadere weapons are back and they look pretty sweet also - the meteor hammer looks like it's got a nice buff in that it's now breaching but otherwise they look like a nice little upgrade to give your characters something different to play with. Still a huge fan of the Excoriator chainaxe - a couple of my sergeants have those and they do the business when they need to.

The one new thing that stood out for me was there is a new upgrade for Independent Characters which grants them an additional attack like digital lasers does and the "Ravening Madmen" rule. I've heard some criticism about this (with the being treated as effective WS3 when being attacked - noting that they use their own weaponskill stat to attack back) with some of the earlier leaks and while I understand why people thought that it was really just a more expensive version of digital lasers, it's actually a nice way to create characters for your Red Butchers - previously you couldn't really have anyone fighting along side them apart from Angron (and lets be honest, he'd just charge off ahead without them any way). You can given them a madman praetor to have a killing machine leader, you could give them a certifiably insane primus medicae to keep them in the fight for longer, and reduces the strength of weapons by 1 for wounding purposes (so makes them harder to wound) - this is pretty huge and to be honest the downsides of the rule are acceptable as it gives Red Butchers a buff that they've sorely needed, I think we will be seeing some interesting combinations involving them in the future.

Angron

The Red Angel in short has been given a nice little buff. He finally has a 2+ save, it was infuriating that power swords were able to cut him down whilst not other Primarchs but that has been sorted and I think this alone makes Angron quite a lot tougher. He can still multi-challenge which is awesome, particularly as Gorefather and Gorechild will tear apart any challengers with ease. The Butchers nails rule has changed (and again for the better in my opinion) - rather than gaining a bonus attack on killing a unit he now gains one at the start of each round starting from the second if he is on the battlefield (so be careful about putting him in reserves as he can't gain them if he isn't present). This makes the attacks gain much more reliable as you aren't reliant on getting a killing blow, he just gets more angry the longer the battle lasts. He also has the same weapon skill debuff that Raving Madmen get which fits him thematically as he's all about attack and not defence.

Sire of the World Eaters isn't much different to before but worth highlighting anyway - everything gets a 6+ Feel No Pain and Adamantium Will which is pretty awesome and particularly in the case of the Adamantium Will side of things it represents their anti-psyker disposition quite nicely. Angron also allows for 3 total movement reactions which is more than most but in this case these are limited to Advance reactions - no issue here, this really synergises with Berserker Assault as it helps get your army even closer to the enemy if they aren't already engaged with them in close combat.

Special units

Red Butchers are not much different to before - each have two power axes which can be upgraded to lightning claws, the Devoured additional can upgrade each axe independantly for a power fist, chain fist and thunder hammer (I can see people upgrading the devoured to have a single chain fist and a thunder hammer to have the best of both worlds, this is something I do not think was possible before). As mentioned before in the Armoury section, whilst the Red Butchers on their own haven't changed to much, the ability to give other independent characters the Ravening Madmen special rule is a huge boon for this unit so all in all this is an upgrade for them!

Rampager squads are looking more and more like the poster boy special unit for the World Eaters (as they feature in both Rites). You can take up to 10 of them in a Land Raider or otherwise take up to 15 of them - you can also give them all jump packs so that could be quite frightening in the Berserker Assault Rite

Warlords

Kharn is the only character listed in the book unfortunately - Surlak might be reappearing in another supplement in the future but this follows the theme of only units with models actually get rules in these books. He doesn't look too different to before - he comes with The Cutter as his weapon but can take Gorechild in lists where Angron is not present and is still otherwise the killing machine we all know him to be. Savage Assault is a lovely ability which he has gained in this new edition of Horus Heresy - he can grant an additional Advance reaction whilst he's still alive (so he's a mini Angron in that regard - no surprises that Angron's equerry would be cut from the same cloth) but also he denies any reactions against charges made by him or his unit so that is pretty impressive! I might make more use of Kharn now to be honest!

Final thoughts

I see an awful lot of boons for the World Eaters legion and I'm looking forward to giving these updated rules a go soon! It is a shame that we appear to have lost the rules around Surlak and the Augmented Inductii as that was a great bonus for the legion when they came out in Book 6 but I imagine that these could reappear in some form at a later date.

Until next time!

Hector Cephas; Throne of Skulls review

Hey all,

I thought it was about time I did a review of the Horus Heresy Throne of Skulls event that took place last weekend. I had an absolutely fantastic time; there's always a really good atmosphere at these events as it's quite relaxed and laid back and it's all about the hobby, the people and the enjoyment of playing games in the Age of Darkness.

As you can see from the images, I managed to get my World Eaters ready for the event - not entirely finished as there is a lack of blood though my first opponent pointed out that they should earn it by getting bloodied here anyway and that works for me!

Game 1: Vlka Fenryka (11-11; draw)

I can tell you, this was a bit of a shock, I couldn't believe I got to play against Vlka Fenryka in my first game! This was a great game to play, my opponent had such a great attitude towards the game and as you would expect, we just threw our legions at each other and there was much carnage - we almost flipped the Night of the Wolf on it's head as due to a bit of luck with cards drawn, I was winning the tactical game and the Vlka Fenryka were beating me on the butchery side of things.

This all changed when Angron died in his challenge with Russ and the game ended in a draw; 11-11 victory points, I'll take that result for a first competitive game with this army!

I saw this army on the Horus Heresy Throne of Skulls: Army Progress page on Facebook. I wish I got a picture of the Leviathan as it was beautiful and he did an excellent job with the Prospero themed basing. This almost won my favourite game vote but didn't in the end purely because of some of the other excellent games I had during the rest of the weekend!

Game 2: Vlka Fenryka (7-7; draw)

Second game, second Vlka Fenryka player - I did end up thinking after finishing this game that I may just end up getting drawn against a third VF player (spoiler alert: I didn't!). This match up, unlike the previous game was pretty one-sided though purely down to my dice rolls - I had two tactical squads entirely wiped out without doing much damage in return and a third swept off the board after losing combat to Russ's wolves.

Despite this, I managed to secure a 7-7 draw by a combination of lucky tactical objective card draws on my part, unfortunate ones for my opponent and the ability to drop pod my troops on top of objectives to pick them up unopposed before moving them onto fight the Vlka Fenryka assuming that they hadn't got to me first. Again, a draw is a draw, I'll take that.

Game 3: Iron Hands (9-6; win)

I must say, I felt bad through out this game. It felt like I picked the Iron Hands apart and due to the tactical objective cards I drew, I had to:
  1. Kill off my opponents troop selections
  2. Wipe out everything on a 2x2 tile
  3. Capture objectives that happened to be in or near my opponents deployment zone
It felt very one-sided in my favour due to the luck of the draw and I can't say it was fun for my opponent to play as I had to take out most of his scoring units which limited his options and his chances of getting back into the fight. 9-6 to me in the end and while it was my first victory of the weekend, it didn't taste sweet.

Game 4: Ultramarines (10-6; win)

Just imagine my amazement that I managed to get Ultramarines as my 4th opponent - when I first started this legion, the idea was to do an Armatura themed army. I loved this game, it was just constant action all the way through - I would put down a unit of tactical marines; the ultramarines would wipe out one of mine; I would take out a tank, the Ultramarines would return the favour by getting a Mortis Contemptor Dreadnought to pistol-whip my Contemptor and put him in his place... it was excellent! We fought all over the board and didn't give up.

The more observant of our readers would notice that this army is all in MkVII armour and that is correct; I do not hold this against my opponent - this was his first Horus Heresy Throne of Skulls and had only started playing Horus Heresy really recently. He is working on a Raven Guard army and if his army is as well painted as his Ultramarines, I am really looking forward to see it!

The final result of this game was a victory to the World Eaters (10-6) - unfortunately, my opponent kept on drawing objectives that were the opposite side of the board to his army so it was a struggle for him to achieve those but he put up a valiant effort, this could have been much closer and could have easily won this if he got better cards. Like the first game - it almost got my favourite game vote but it was beaten to the punch by the final opponent...

Game 5: Legio Custodes (11-13; loss; favourite game)

I know what you are thinking... "Wait, you lost this game, how was this your favourite?!". Simply put, it was very much like my previous game against the Ultramarines but turned up to 11.

Right from the start, I had to push him - if I let the Custodes get momentum, I was going to be toast so I had to play very aggressively right from the start to try and tip the scales in my favour. Unfortunately, the double-threat of a Leviathan and Contemptor dreadnought failed to tie down his troops before the rest of my army could get into position and as a result it put me on the back foot. His elite guard then started to advance up the field but got intercepted by my praetor and his command retinue. His Custodian Tribune had to join this melee to try to free up his men however, as Gahlan Surlak was backing up my Praetor, my command squad eventually won the day slaying both him and a squad of the the most elite of the 10,000 by the end of the game.

Believe it or not, until the 4th turn, I was actually winning on victory points as I got some useful cards at the right time and got some points onto the board very quickly. However, in my opponents 4th turn, he managed to get 7 victory points in a single turn that turned my 4 point lead into a 3 point deficit! All-in-all, this game was a very bloody, roller coaster ride that would have made Khorne very pleased indeed and was a very well deserved favourite game vote for my opponent; we shall have a rematch in the future I am sure!

To conclude, this was an incredibly enjoyable weekend and I would like to thank the Warhammer World events team for running such an excellent event and everyone else in attendance for just being awesome. I am really looking forward to the next Throne of Skulls whenever that takes place!

Until next time!

Hector Cephas; World Eaters Status Report

Hi all,

There does seem to be quite a bit of interest in this project so today I am going to go through where my World Eaters project is currently at and what I am hoping to get done in time for Throne of Skulls on Saturday 25th March.

Unit Assembled Base Coat Shaded Highlighted Based
Angron
Praetor
Gahlan Surlak
Primus Medicae
Tactical Squad 1
Tactical Squad 2
Legion Inductees 1
Legion Inductees 2
Legion Terminators
Red Butchers
Legion Contemptor Dreadnought
Legion Leviathan Siege Dreadnought
Legion Drop Pods (5)
Legion Dreadnought Drop Pods (2)
Legion Anvillus Pattern Dreadclaw Drop Pod (1)

2 weeks to go now! I've got a fair bit of painting ahead of me but I think I can still get this done on time - also, the table is a bit misleading as while some of the stages aren't "complete", some of these are as good as done - the tacticals and the terminators come into mind in regards to this. I think the Red Butchers won't be coming with me as they are a lot more detailed than I originally thought and I don't think I'll have time to properly do them justice. I am also going to be kit bashing Surlak this week - should be able to build and paint him in one night really so I'm not too worried.

With any luck my drop pods won't take me too long to paint, for the most part it is going to be dry brushing as I have already got them primed (inside and outside different colours to make my life a whole lot easier) - I'm hoping to rattle through them tomorrow so you may get to see them in the weekly progress report tomorrow!

Until next time guys!

Hector Cephas; Angron - the Lord of the Red Sands

Hi all,

As you may have seen yesterday, my weekly update was not quite complete. This is because I thought it would be a better idea to do a dedicated post Angron rather than a quick paragraph - he's still a work in progress as I have a few bits to do with him here and there but otherwise I thought it might be a good idea to show you how he's progressing:

I really love the model. Compared to some of the Primarchs, he has got to be the easiest to build. What I ended up doing in the end was prime (chaos black) and base coat him first, then assemble him and finally finish off the shading and dry brushing - I decided to drybrush rather than edge highlight as I prefer the rougher look and I feel that suits Angron perfectly:

Armour:

  1. Warplock Bronze (base coat)
  2. Balthasar Gold (heavy dry brush)
  3. Agrax Earthshade (wash)
  4. Balthasar Gold (medium dry rush)
  5. Brass Scorpion (very light drybrush)

Leather:
  1. Khorne Red (base coat)
  2. Mephiston Red (dry brush)
  3. Agrax Earthshade (shade)
  4. Mephiston Red (light drybrush)
Skin (red markings are missing for the time being):
  1. Rakarth Flesh (base)
  2. Reikland Fleshshade (shade)
  3. Rakarth Flesh (light drybrush)
  4. Flayed One Flesh (very light drybrush)

Cloak (fur):
  1. Mournfang Brown (base)
  2. Agrax Earthshade (shade)
  3. Pallid Wych Flesh (drybrush)
Cloak (hide):
  1. Ushabti Bone (base)
  2. Agrax Earthshade (shade)
  3. Ushabti Bone (drybrush)
  4. Pallid Wych Flesh (light dry brush)

Weapons, chains and butchers nails (chains and butchers nails need fixing up):
  1. Leadbelcher (base)
  2. Agrax Earthshade (shade)
  3. Leadbelcher (drybrush)
  4. Ironbreaker (light drybrush)

So there we have it. Apart from the bits I need to fix up on him, all that remains is to bloody him up with some Blood for the Blood God and then he'll be all set for Throne of Skulls at the end of March assuming all goes well with the rest of the legion. I feel I am progressing very well with the rest of my World Eaters - hopefully I'll have a good update for you all on Sunday - just cautious of promising to complete a 3k list in less than 4 weeks but I am giving it a go!

Until next time,

Hector Cephas

Hector Cephas; New Year, New Legion

Hi all,

As you may have seen last week, I will be starting a new legion project this year - the World Eaters! Oh yes, the angry men in white and blue (hidden underneath all the gore) charging across the battlefield, hacking apart anything that stands in their way.

If you recall, I did a post in December about how I would do the legion and I have somewhat changed my mind based off the comments I received. In short...

DROP PODS!!!

I've wanted to do a drop pod themed army for quite a while and I think it suits the World Eaters quite nicely. To give you an idea what I am going for, here is my proposed army list (~3k points):

HQs:
  • Kharn the Bloody (RoW: Orbital Assault)
  • Legion Centurion (Primus Medicae - a.k.a. Kargos)
Troops:
  • Legion Tactical Squad (10 men, chain axes, sergeant has a power weapon, drop pod)
  • Legion Tactical Squad (10 men, chain axes, sergeant has a power weapon, drop pod)
  • Legion Tactical Squad (10 men, chain axes, sergeant has a power weapon, drop pod)
  • Legion Tactical Squad (10 men, chain axes, sergeant has a power weapon, drop pod)
Elites:
  • Veteran Tactical Squad (8 men, chain axes, sergeant has a power weapon, drop pod)
  • Legion Terminator Squad (10 men, mixture of pairs of lightning claws, chain fists and power fists)
  • Red Butchers (10 men, pairs of power axes, sergeant has twin chain fists)
Fast Attack:
  • Anvillus Pattern Dreadclaw Drop Pod
Heavy Support:
  • Leviathan Siege Dreadnought (claw and siege drill, heavy flamers, dreadnought drop pod)
Lord of War:
  • Angron

The idea is that Angron will go in the Anvillus by himself (as per Betrayer as he used to get strapped into his own drop pod - who would want to share a pod with him when the nail bite after all!) and that leaves me with 6 other units in drop pods and 2 deep striking terminator armoured units - 4 pods arrive turn 1, 3 pods and the terminators arrive (hopefully) soon after. If I wish to play a 2k game, I just need to drop Angron, the Anvillus and the Red Butchers and for 2.5k I can either drop Angron and the Anvillus or the Red Butchers!

I hope to have this ready for Throne of Skulls in March which might be a bit ambitious but what the hell, it will be a good challenge! What do you guys think?

Until next time,

Hector Cephas

12th Legion - World Eaters

Hi all,

It's 12th December and running with the current theme for this month I am going to talk about a project I want to take on later in the year - my first traitor army, the World Eaters!

I love Betrayer, even as I write this now I am listening to it, and I feel this is one of the best books in the series - it can't be helped really, Aaron Dembski-Bowden is a damn good author (heretically good according to Dan Abnett even!) and it is a great follow on from First Heretic and Know No Fear. Even beyond the obvious candidates to focus on (i.e. Angron and Kharn), a lot of World Eaters lore was covered:
  • The War Hounds
  • The Butchers Nails and their affects on the legion
  • The Conqueror (Captain Lotara Sarrin is amazing!)
  • Legio Audax
The more I listen to this, the more I want to do them - the final engagement in the Battle of Armatura stood out to me as something I could use as the initial theme of the army - in short, a lot of World Eaters charging directly into an Ultramarine shield wall regardless of how tactically disadvantaged they were due to the effects of the butchers nails:

HQs:
  • Kharn the Bloody
  • Legion Centurion (Primus Medicae - a.k.a. Kargos)
Troops:
  • Legion Tactical Squad (20 men, chain axes and bolt pistols)
  • Legion Tactical Squad (20 men, chain axes and bolt pistols)
  • Legion Tactical Squad (20 men, chain axes and bolt pistols)
  • Legion Tactical Squad (20 men, chain axes and bolt pistols)
Elites:
  • Veteran Tactical Squad (Kharn and Kargos' unit - 10 men with chain axes and bolt pistols that are a bit better than a standard tactical squad)

This is less than 1500 points and I feel this is a decent back bone of the army; this would give me room to explore options such as adding the red butchers as a unit along with Angron or bring in a Malchador assault tank in support like on Armatura along with some assault marines to bulk up the army further to 2500 points or more. This could be terrifying for some armies seeing this force running at their lines as fast as they can with no consideration about tactics or their own survival!

What do you guys think? I think 90 men charging across the board with no support is exactly what the World Eaters would do but for example how well do you think adding some drop pods with veterans would work for this list?

Until next time!

Darko's progress update

Hi guys, just thought I would share with you the latest bits I have been working on. As you may have seen in the Weekly Report I am currently working theough updating my World Eaters and last week managed to conclude the chipping application and blood gore adding.

Here are a few more pics that weren't shown in the Report:

As per my previous posts I will provide a quick explanation as to to how I have acheived these effects. To obtain the chipping for my World Eaters I have used a dark brown, Gorthor, in my case. This is sponged on to the model but with the Mk2 plate it was a bit difficult to get the result I was looking for so I resorted to using a very fine detail brush instead. The blood effect is using the same application texhniques as above but using Blood for the Blood God.

Next up is to work through my tactical marines. Quite a few to do so I have my work cut out!!! But for now thats all I have to show.

What do you guys think? What weathering and/or damage techniques do you guys use? Let us know in the comments below :)

Horus Heresy Book 1: Betrayal - An overview

In the Bunny camp we have decided that its time for us to do an overview of our favourite books, the Horus Heresy series from Forgeworld. Book number 6 has just been released and we want to show those of you that might be on the fence about purchasing this great series that it is well worth it! We are kicking this series off with Betrayal. Below you will find an overview of each of the chapters and my thoughts on the content.

Book 1: Betrayal

Preface
The book starts with a small 1 page preface written by the 'author' of the book. Now I don't mean the actual author (That was Alan Bligh) but by the character that Alan uses to tell the fateful stories from. This is a nice touch which gives me impression that what I am reading has been taken from the depths of a library somewhere on Terra to discover the horrible truth of a past long gone. This character, most likely a remembrancer, signs the page AK. While a very simple page, it seems to me to add some real weight and significance to the words locked up for all time in the book. Almost as though the storyteller can't believe the story he is retelling actually happened. The art work at the begin is incredible and help sets the mood of the horrors of the story to come.

The Age of the Emperor
For the Horus Heresy to make sense we need to understand what came before the it. The 13 pages making up this section detail the rise of the Imperium and the Emperors. The story kicks off with details regarding the Age of strife, followed by The Unification Wars and the rise of the Imperium. It then moves onto the Great Crusade, more details around the Imperium's make up and finally the beginning of doubt within Horus. If you are not overly familiar with the pre-heresy fluff then this is great chapter that will help to fill in your knowledge. If you happen to know the facts then there are still some great tidbits of information that you may not have been aware of to be discovered.

The Legiones Astartes

A small chapter that details the history of the Astartes, starting with creation and Initiation. This is followed by the strategic disposition of the Legions. It's a great resource, showing the ideal composition of the legions. You will find the various ranks and structures in place within a legion detailed, as well as some of the assets that the legions had at there disposable. You may find this extremely helpful if you're aiming to recreate a sizeable chunk of a legion or, like us Bunnies, creating your own characters of differing ranks.

The Death of Isstvan III

Here is where you find the story of the Warmaster's betrayal, split into a three part story detailing all of the events that took place on Isstvan III. If you have read the first 3 Horus Heresy books from Black Library then this part of the story will be mostly familiar, however this version is more fact driven rather than focusing on the major characters. It is an account of all the events told from the perspective of someone that witnessed them first hand or at least gathered all the information available from those that has witnessed them. It is a really good read. I enjoyed having all the information being in one place, along with detailing some of the elements that were not covered in the Black Library books. Each of the legions that fought on the planet have there time in the spot light. If you wanted more details of what the Sons of Horus, Death Guard, World Eaters or Emperors Children parts in the story then this is certainly the place to find it! The art work looks great as always. There are 2 orbital picts of the Choral City which show the avenues of attack that all the legions took at different times of the battle. The orbital picts really show the scale of conflict and helps reinforce what the story has to say about the forces involved. Ending this chapter are several picts of some of the legions vehicles, extremely useful for painting ideas or styles that you may want to use on your own vehicles.

The Space Marine Legions

This chapter is entirely devoted to the four legions that fought on Isstvan. It contains loads of specific details on each legions history, structure, fighting style and exemplary battles. As well as plenty of art of the legionnaires armour and armoury, again extremely useful for understanding what your legion of choice looked like during the lead up to and during the events of Isstvan III. If you're collecting Sons of Horus, Death Guard, World Eaters, Emperors Children or are a fluff buff then you really need to read this part of the book! The information contained is first rate and can help you to solidify the direction you take with your legion, as well as giving you a greater understanding of what each legion was like before the Heresy.

Legio Mortis
This is for the Legio Mortis what the previous chapter was for the legions. Great for fluff buffs or Mortis collectors.

The Death of Isstvan III Campaign

Have you ever fancied playing out the battles of Isstvan? I know I have! The chance to recreate these awesome moments from 'history' that we have been reading about for years has always been something that I have wanted to do. Forgeworld has now given us a great guide on how to recreate these battles an in fact have laid out an entire campaign. Included in this chapter is 6 deployment maps and 6 missions specifically for your battles in the Age of Darkness. Having used these in games that I have played, I can safely say that they are fun, fluffy, enjoyable to play and better than the 40k counterparts! These are really supplement missions intended to fill out the campaign before the main events, 4 Legendary Battles that are intended to represent the major conflicts that took place on Isstvan III. These look fantastic and I am looking forward to playing these with the other Bunnies in the future. As a bonus they have including the Zone Mortalis expansion as well, although I prefer the boarding mission version in Book 3.

Battles in the Age of Darkness & Space Marine Legion Crusade Army List

At the time of its release this was the place to find all the information you needed to construct a legion. This chapter is unfortunately outdated now due to the additions and updates made across the other books. The release of the Legion Army list red book includes an updated version of this very army list. Since this separate army list book was released I have not made use of this chapter!

Space Marine Legion Army List Appendix I
Again at the time of the release this was a awesome chapter, it features the rules to the 4 Isstvan legions. Unfortunately as with the previous chapter this is now outdated, twice in fact, so you certainly won't be using this book for these rules.

Age of Darkness Army List Appendix: The Mechanicum
The start of the Mechanicum army list, again very outdated now, don't buy this book for this list! After the Mechanicum list are Forgeworlds Apocalypse rules, which are sort of useful but again not particularly up to date.

My Thoughts
This is a brilliant book, I highly recommend it! The quality of the book is outstanding, each page feels special and the leather finish on the cover combined with the silver metal corners helps to finish off the overall look. The art work is brilliant and inspirational. The story that it tells, while familiar, is a really good read and provides a lot of information that isn't available elsewhere. The legion information is the stand out and if you are a die hard fan of one of the four legions featured in this book then you should definitely be considering getting it. The downside is the out of date army lists which take up nearly half the book. Being the first book also goes against it. Book 2 feels a lot more refined than this one and the legion content included in book 2, is on the whole, better. If I was just starting in the Heresy now would I buy this book? Definitely! They are a Warhammer 30k/40k fan and collectors dream!

What are your thoughts on this book?

Darko's World Eater update

Hi guys, hope you are all well. Tonight I thought I would let you guys in on what I have been working on recently. I have been updating my World Eater army over the last few weeks. This was my first ever army and I love these guys a lot. But after a while I realised that these guys needed a bit more done to these.

I firstly have been starting with rebasing my army. By the time the new basing structure of 32mm had come out I had already near enough completed my army. Therefore recently I have been converting all of my models (that are applicable) from 25mm to 32mm. This includes all of my tactical squads, assault and heavy squads.

I have also taken the time to apply weathering and damage to infantry as well. At the time of completion it looks like my army was fresh out of the manufactorum!! So I have been making sure that these guys look like they have been through the wars and earned their war credentials!!!

I have also been applying some gore to the army. These are World Eaters after all!!! You cant have a XII legionary and have him without the viscera from some loyalist dog all over him!

Here are a few pics, showing what I have been talking about above:

Here is my Assault squad. Not totally finished but looking a lot more battle worn.

The bases were coated with sand first of all. At this point I have primed them black using Abaddon Black Air. I plan to take them to a neutral brown colour using a mix of brown layers. I will show this off shortly in a seperate post.

Hard to get a clear focussed picture but here shows off some of the battle damage and blood spatter I have applied. I have done the damage using Gorthor Brown lightly sponged over armour plate edges. I went for brown over a metal wearing colour such as Leadbelcher as it would show up clearly against the white ceramite and gives it a rusted effect too from scuffs.

To get the gore I used Blood for the Blood God sponged over the model. I have varied the level of viscera being worn by the legionaries as they will all have gotten through their enemies at a different rate!!!

I am doing a few units at a time so progress has been slow but I think I will concentrate on one at a time from now. Next task is to finalise the bases on this squad and focus on the next unit: the Rampagers.

What do you guys think? How do you put the finishing touches to your armies? Let me know in the comments below :)
