Sons of Horus Justaerin Painting Guide Part 2

Hello all!

Welcome to part 2 of the Justaerin painting guide. If you missed part one you can catch up here.

Step 8: Highlight the gold with Runelord Brass. I applied this to the top edges and rivets only. I also added some to the top of the 'ball' on the axe and the ammo hoppers under the gun.

Step 9: Highlight the silvers with Runefang Steel. Lightly added the top of all the silvers. I made sure to only get paint on the raised areas of the cables to keep the Leadbelcher and wash showing in the gaps.

Step 10: Highlight the cutting edges on the axe with Runefang steel. Applied only to the front and back cutting edges in a striking manor to give it a used look. I also added thin highlights to edges of the axe.

Step 11: Highlight the red with Mephiston Red. Added to the edges of the red leather and the thinly to the edge of the shoulder pad. I picked out the rivets on the red shoulder pad as well. The insides of the Eye of Horus on the belt and shoulder were repainted in Mephiston leaving the wash showing around the edges.

Step 12: Add Evil Suns Scarlet to the Eye of Horus on the belt and shoulder. Make sure you leave the Mephiston showing around the edges, you want to build up small triangles of colour.

Step 13: Add Troll Slayer Orange in the same manor as step 12.  You should leave the Mephiston and Evil Suns Scarlett showing.

Step 14: The finishing step is to make the black shine! I applied a 50/50 mix of Lahmian Medium and 'Ardcoat to all armour areas. This included all the golds and silvers. I did not add it to the leather, gun or axe. I have not decided if I should apply it to the gun or axe, your thoughts on this would be appreciated! The picture below is just after I applied the mix.

Step 15: Leave to dry overnight!
Step 16: Enjoy your finished model!

I will be adding weathering once I have all 30 Justaerin painted up to this point and I will complete the base at the same time. I haven't decided what style base to do yet and this will affect some of the weather that I will do. Originally I had planned to do a city fight style but not sure if this will be to dark. Anyone got any thoughts or suggestions on what they think will compliment the paint scheme? Once I have completed these bits I will add a further guide for weathering and basing!

  1. Impressive, but it will look bloody scary across the table, or worse, on the opponents side 😉

  3. Great looking Justaerin! Planning my SoH, and going to do a mix of very high gloss and flat black Justaerin, Reavers, and Horus. Think Darth Vader armor, and shadow troopers. I think it will look cool. Will do gloss on the vehicles, but not as glossy, a little dulled.

    1. Thanks very much! Sounds like a good army plan you have there!

  4. Beautiful! I will do my Abaddon & The Justies like this too! ;o)

    Few questions
    1) Would this scheme look good on Reavers too? (just swapping red for green)
    2) is ard coat same as satin varnish or gloss varnish? (I have those from vallejo)
    3) I was thinking of using corvus black for all the blacks in my force, is it wise to mix paint with varnish for the final layer? (black spray primer, layer of black and the last layer corvus black+lahmian+varnish)

    Cheers!

    1. Thanks Arto! I will be using this same scheme for my reavers. I plan on doing red shoulder pads rather than green on them though. Forgeworld have tended to go red in the art, just the actual painted ones on the website that are green. 'Ard coat is similar to a gloss varnish, it is quite thick though. Reminds me of PVA glue!! Hence the medium to thin. You would lose some of the opacity of the varnish if you added a paint to it as well, which would likely dull any highlights you may have done. Best thing to do is give it a go on a mini to see if it works how you want!

    2. Cheers, I will post pics on my blog when I have something to show.
Oh, and red pads for Reavers, I might do that as well. I just thought they have green pads as thats how they painted them on the FW website.
Not sure, but I remember reading that red pads were used only by 1st companys Catulan Reavers?
And reavers from other companies had green pads?...

  5. Perhaps bas the models to match the color of Horus's base or Abaddon's... If your using Horus, use the same rubble that is under him, looks like they're on the same battlefield. That's what I plan to do anyway

    1. This is a good point, though I may rebase Abaddon and Horus to something more in keeping with the army!

  6. I don't know whether you could do it with this particular model because it looks at though it's alread attached, but how about cracked paving for the base? I'm not talking about raised slabs with detailing underneath, but rather a same level, broken paving-type of look...large scale slabs so that you only see one or two edges or corners, with tiny pieces of masonry around his feet. It's enough to give the base some detail but not too much that it diverts attention away from the (very fine) model. I was saying to add the model afterwards because that makes with a whole lot easier working on both if they're separate components.
    It's just an idea...🤗

    1. Thanks for the suggestion Kyle, that sounds like what I had in mind for a city style base! I have found some nice resin ones that are similar to your idea but more concrete than paving slab. I should be able to easily remove the mini from the base so may explore this option!

  7. If I'm honest, I like seeing models on home-made, personal bases rather than semi mass produced ones. I know it's easier for people to just buy a set, paint up the figures for them and plop them on but...I dunno...I just think there's something special about a figure on a unique base, no matter how detailed. Maybe it's because I like spending as much time on building and painting bases for my own figures that makes me feel that way. But, at the end of the day, they're your figures to do as you please and I'm sure they'll look really good either way...
