Darko's summary of the Betrayal of Calth box set game

So today as you will hopefully have noticed I was in my local Games Workshop store getting a feel for the new Betrayal of Calth game coming out next week.

I was there for a good deal of time and played quite a few games. I rather enjoyed playing the game and there is in my opinion a good amount of replayability not to get bored with it gladly.

I played 5 games with a couple of scenarios against a few of the other customers that were there. The models inside were painted basically but I think that was just to get it on show that day. But using the models you cant really see the difference between this plastic kit and the Forge World models we are accustomed to. The games can range in time depending on the scenario but each game lasts around half an hour so if youre looking for a quick game then this certainly ticks the box.

The dynamics in using energy points for movement, shooting, assualts and consolidation takes no time at all to master and the combat is a fairly simple system that everyone from the new budding starter to the hardened veteran.

The box sells itself in my opinion, by of course using these minis in our heresy armies, but the actual game is a good one and GW have done well here!!

In regards to the heresy armies we use I can actually envisage using this game and its mechanics for the Horus Heresy. Because we use such a limited amount of models I can imagine this would be perfect to formulate our own short killteam missions and also I think this would be a great to do a Shattered Legion escape mission.

I honestly cant wait to have a hold of my own copy of the box set and put these into my armies. Bring on my next impending legion!!!!

Let me know if youve experienced the game yet and let me know what you think in the comments below. Also let us know how excited to get your own!!!

  2. It looks to be a nice simple game based on the special dice. I am looking forward to using it to introduce Little Nathaniel too his Dad's passion. Well done GW.

  6. I was lucky enough to snaffle up the special two-part book set and the free poster for getting on there so quick (that was a sneaky little unannounced release GW, you little scamps... :) ) so that's where my cash went today, but I will be getting this set sometime. The only thing I don't really like about it, though, and no one else seems to have noticed it, is that the back packs are the modern style as opposed to the very distinctive Heresy style...

    2. Hi Kyle. Nice to have u here. Yeah would be great to have that poster on the wall.
The back packs have indeed deviated a lot from the Forge World design. I would say it is more of a reimagining of the mkIV backpack. The vent in the middle is now a little fan. There has already been 2x mkIV backpacks from FW (the first was the one which was used on mkv and mkvi.

    3. Hi, Drake, thanks very much for the welcome.... I'm sure the fan part was on one of the incarnations of the Chaos packs as well back in the day, and maybe GW are trying to tie the Heresy packs into the more modern version via the traitors because the traitors would have old/new style gear. Or maybe I'm just waffling and making excuses. At the end of the day Forge World sell packs alone so I suppose it's really easy to just buy and fit them to make the figures "real time", if you know what I mean...?

    1. Kaelo has some lovely framed pieces from the HH cover range and Darko has the Dynat canvas.
Darko also bought me one of the tall HH Legion prints of a Death Guard Legionnaire at an event. Now I just need a dedicated gaming room.

    2. Without a doubt, Drake-though I'm usually selective on what I buy. I like to think I can separated the diamonds from the turds, as it were...and these pictures are definitely on the side of diamonds-from what I can tell from the write ups, anyway. I'll gond out for definate when mine's arrives... :)

  8. I can see the game being very useful to play out all kinds of grudge matches (Wolves V Sons, Bearers V Ultras, Fists V Warriors) I'm looking forward to seeing a 'flesh' copy.
