Introducing Darien Vasco

Hello! I am Darien Vasco of the IIIrd legion and I am extremely delighted to be the latest member of the Battle Bunnies! This blog has been a daily read for myself for the last few years and now having the opportunity to contribute to its hallowed pages is very exciting!

I started in the hobby whilst I was at school, around age 12/13. Two of my friends had started collecting and I thought it looked awesome and joined in. One collected Eldar and the other Orks. As for me, I went for space marines, the mighty ultramarines in fact, well that is until I decided I wanted to do my own chapter. So as I had no concept of maintaining detail on the models I sprayed over the blue and turned them black. To top this off the defining feature of my marines was the orange shoulder pads. Needless to say this idea of my own chapter quickly faded away and I moved on to Blood Angels! Unfortunately lacking in painting skill, patience and my friends slowly drifting away for the hobby, I stopped collecting and packed everything in a box and filed in the loft. For many years they sat in the loft forgotten and cursing my poor painting skills. Until one summer when I was at college and we had a large clear out at home. Everything came out including the box full of blue/black/red marines and a Leman Russ. Nostalgia over took me as I looked at the hideous mess I had made of painting them, however this was short lived and I believe I said to my Dad 'Yeah don't need this any more', as I proceeded to add the box to the pile for the dump! (I have come to regret this decision since getting back into the hobby. I mean I had Calgar, Dante a few other characters, scouts, bikes, marines and the Leman Russ!! Quite a few of which haven't changed at all over the years!) Some more years past and whilst at Uni a friend of mine set a small flame alight after I discovered he was an avid 40k collector. This small flame burned away and every now and again I would take a look on the GW website and admire the models but I resisted. However the flame turned to fire one day at work when a colleague of mine showed me what he had been painting and after I showed an interest he offered me up his Orks from the Assualt on Black Reach box for free and that was it, I was in and hooked!! 10k of Orks, 3k of harlies/eldar and a sizeable Sons of Horus legion later and we reach today!

My Ork Dread Mob!

The Heresy addiction started when FW released Angron, I was just in awe of the model. My obsession with all things heresy really kicked off once I purchased the beautiful Betrayal book. I ended up spending many hours deciding what legion to collect, World Eaters, Emperors Children, Iron Hands and then Horus was released! His model is amazing and that was my decision made! The Heresy era is so deep, I love the story, setting, models and gaming!

For the Bunnies I will be taking command of the Emperor's Children and adding reinforcements to the Sons of Horus (updates coming soon!) and eventually World Eaters. My Orks and eldar will make appearances over the course of the Great Crusade campaigns as well. I am really looking forward to getting my models into the fight and making our own stories in this awesome universe!

I will leave you with a picture of my Harlequins as I'm really proud of them and as they were not present in the Great Crusade won't be featuring on the blog!

  4. Welcome :)

It's a shame that Harlequins weren't around during the heresy - that's something they should retcon!! ;P

Love your dread army, that's something i would do too for Orks if i would do them :)

Can't wait for your Emperor's Children!

    1. They should retcon the harlies! Gutted they weren't around! :( The dread army is good fun, I have a stompa to add to the mix but no paint on it yet!

I'm looking forward to getting started on the EC!

    2. My opinion is the harlequins predate the fall and were priests for the laughing God. I can't see a group like this appear from nowhere. Once the fall happened, they retreated to the web way and black library. Imperial records are notoriously vague and full of holes, so they may not have recorded eariler encounters, or the records were lost or destroyed. Alternatively maybe no one survived the meeting....

    3. The Fall (c.M31) - The civilisation of the ancient Eldar is annihilated by the catastrophic birth of Slaanesh.
Cergorach's Summons (c.M32) - In the wake of the Fall, the surviving worshippers of the Laughing God disappear into the webway without a word of explanation.
The War Begins (641.M33) - After centuries of isolation, Cegorach's followers return in spectacular fashion. The Masque of the Midnight Sorrow burst from the webway at Llayen Nuadh to fall upon a horde of Slaaneshi Daemons. Their intervention rescues the embattled warhost of Ulthwé, and with their strengths combined the Eldar hurl their daemonic foes back into the Warp. This is but the first of many such grand entrances, the masques announcing their return to war with great showmanship.
The First Solitaire (666.M33) - The Dance Without End give the first ever performance of the Fall. Their audience are horrified, not least by the disturbing figure of the galaxy's first Solitaire as she brazenly bestrides the stage.

      :(

    4. The way I read that is that they did exist but it took them three millennia to summon the courage to wear those fancy clothes instead of the usual Eldar fare :-)

    5. NOOOOOOOO!!!
      Curse you fluff bunnies.... ;)

    6. Lol. Yup. So normal Eldar.

It is the same with Dark Eldar unfortunately. In the Great Crusade the closest thing to normal Eldar in my opinion (to make a fluffy list from) is the Corsair list. They were depraved cruel Eldar instead, a shadow of what they really turned into compared to their Commaragh iteration.

    7. Frankly, I'd allow Tau, Tyranids or Necrons. Whose to say a Necron Tomb doesn't wake up early? Tyranids could be assembled to look a little different, representing a form of alien hive. Tau battlesuit and drone army could represent a civilization who built "heretical" automata. If you don't want Harlequins to be Harlequins, just call them eccentric pirates.

Just my opinion. And I think I've just convinced myself to look into 30K.

    8. Tau are too iconic now as a 40k race :(

Necron tombs had awoken! I have discussed this with authors. However, during the early awakening protocols it would only be tomb stalkers/spiders and scarabs.
Tyranids could be bastardised into bits for a space bug army, but again are probably too iconic.

  5. Harlie's probably existed in 30K, the Eye of Terror was thing and the Fall had come and gone.
