Pre-Heresy Iron Hands: Ferrus Manus WIP

Hello everyone,

I'm back with another post for my Iron Hands legion which features the gorgon himself;
Ferrus Manus!

So it was a bit of an impulse buy for a future meeting with the other bunnies to give my force some much needed close combat capabilities. However, I have to confess I was planning on doing a step by step build for the model but unfortunately I am in no way a master model builder! lol. It's definitely the fiddliest model I have ever built, as you have to apply all of the parts for the servo harness, chains and pipes separately. The picture below should give you an idea of all the tiny pieces before the build.

Sometime later after much frustration and cursing! Ferrus was ready :)

I will definitely say it is a beautiful model, the details on close inspection are brilliant. I personally enjoy the painting side of the hobby to the construction, so i'm excited to put brush to model over the next week. The only drawback I can see with the model is its posing. I know it is designed to be apart of the diorama with Fulgrim, but in most other cases he is swinging way too high in my opinion.

I did think about reposing him myself to change his stance or the height of his swing, but in the end I decided to build him as intended. Another Ferrus in the future may get some changes though :).

I have also decided to not paint or put together the scenic base for the time being. This is because I am wanting to maximize the amount of painting time I have on Ferrus himself, so he's completed for his first battle field appearance. The other reason being that I would like to magnetize the scenic base. Below is a photo without the dead Emperors Children on it ;).

So I hope you like the quick post from me, please feel free to ask any questions. I will be doing an overview post in the not too distant future talking about the legion, its organisation and tactics. After doing my research I'm looking forward to discussing the Gorgon's style of warfare and how I see it affecting my legion. (In a fluffy way of course!)

Thanks again for reading,

Aveinus Kaane

  1. Are you going to take your Immortal painting guide for a spin with this model, or are you thinking about trying another technique or 2?

    1. I think I will see how I get on, but yeah I think so :). There is so much fine detail I think I will have to work in a bit more bronze to break up the silver. The only thing I'm a bit apprehensive about is painting his metal forearms.

    2. Yeah I bet. You could grab some Tamiya Chrome. . . . Or actually paint them flesh coloured and try one of those actual chrome sprays lower down. If so make sure you try it on something else just in case first though lol.

  2. That is a cool mini. I was looking at him in detail at warhammer world last weekend and the forge world guys did a fantastic job of modelling and then painting him. I agree with you tho, those metal forearms look tricky to paint. There's definitely some blue hues in there to tie the flesh and metal together.
Good luck, I look forward to seeing your version

  3. Thanks Dave, i'll need it! I will have a look into that actually, the blue does sound like an interesting effect to add to the arms :)

    1. The blue really helped the transition, looked like the metal was creeping into his veins.
Maybe have a practice on a test mini first?

    2. Yeah I do really like the effect, i'll have to find a model with bare arms to test on maybe :). If it works i'll try and document the process on ferrus!

  4. A little bit off topic: question for any bunny that plays ultramarines: the gladius invictus, does it ignore sheild as in combat and storm sheilds or force fields and refractor fields or both? Just looking for some rule clarification. Also do special weapon squad Sergents get the same weapons as the rest of the team or not?

    1. Shield-Mocker: Enemy models may not claim saves of any kind that are derived from carried shields, including combat shields, boarding shields, etc.

To me this suggests any physically held shield. So refractor shields and Iron Halos would still get there save.

Yes the squad sergeant also gets the weapon. Confirmed by Forge World in an email :)

      Yours

The bunny that plays Ultramarines ;)

    2. Thanks kealo. I forgot which one of you played ultras. :)
Thanks for clearing up the rules. I have been looking on 1d4chan for ideas of how to build my army and it wasn't very clear. It says one thing then I asked the Internet and it said another so I thought come.to you guys as you may as well work for forge world.
      Thanks again.

    3. What's a good loadout for legion terminators for the Ultramarines legion? Using the models from the starter set.

    1. Thanks Darien, I just get so frustrated sometimes with building, I like to get the posing right but painting is a much calmer and relaxing experience for me haha!
