Sons of Horus First Company Update 5: Chaplain Cordactus

Hello all!

The latest addition to my Sons of Horus First Company is Chaplain Isaac Cordactus. Cordactus is a particularly vicious fighter who was born into the gang wars of Cthonia. He spent his youth leading daring raids on other gangs, often arriving unseen and from unexpected directions.


When the Great Crusade reached Cthonia, Cordactus was one of the first to pass the Astastes test and was quickly added into the ranks on the XVI legion. Isaac was a very skilled close combat fighter and was placed into a one of the 23rd company assault squads.


He was soon in command of this squad and receiving battle honours during every war. These honours lead him to being noticed by Kalus Ekkaddon, captain of the First Company Reavers. His battle record impressed Kalus and he offered Isaac a place in the elite Reavers of the First Company. It only took 3 battles before he was named Chieftain of his squad and he continued adding to his growing honours.


In the heat of battle Cordactus lead his men in a way that always brought the most out of them. They fought harder and without fear. Within a span of 10 years he was not only leading his squad but  several squads into battle. The zeal he showed for battle was becoming legendary within the First Company. The Chaplaincy of the legion took note and appointed Isaac the role of First Company Chaplain, a role he relishes and excels at. Cordactus' preference for war is to take the lead of several Reaver squads in drop pods and surprise the legions enemies, surrounding them from all directions. 


I will be creating a unique set of rules, based of the standard chaplain rules, for Cordactus. I am currently trying to decide what rules would be good to represent Isaac on the table top, I would like to find something unique to him that fits into his background above. 

What do you all think would be a good rules for him?

  1. Nice fluff. Maybe outflank and acute senses? Re-roll reserves?

    1. Thanks! Those had crossed my mind as well and do fit! I think he will definitely have outflank, as reavers do and he was once a reaver after all! The acute senses would be a nice touch that I hadn't considered! Only thing is he may be in drop pods quite often making outflank and acute senses a little redundant.

    2. You're right, it can be quite useless if he usually deploys with drop pods. But, however, this can encourage you to use him in a different way. That's always cool! Btw, what about something like this:
      "'Leader of raids': Isaac Cordactus and his unit can shoot and run or run and shoot the same turn he enters the battlefield." It's not superpowered but still fluffy and goes well outflanking or droppoding.

  4. Haha! Thanks! The BaC maul worked out well, it's not too eagle wingy like a lot of the 40k chaplains have! The spikey fist is cool, it's one of the reaver ones!

    1. Regarding rules, he looks like one hell of a battering ram. Why not a special rule which gives him D3 Hammer of Wrath attacks? Also do you want a sheet created for him :)

  6. He looks brilliant mate. You have done a phenomenal job of capturing the raw brutality of the legion in a miniature. As for rules; why dont you look at using the Salamanders special chaplain dude but replacing (Salamanders) with (Luna Wolves/Sons of Horus)?

    When it comes to the rules, i like the idea that good leaders grants their units some sort of bonus. Though it might some times be hard to balance, as the unit he can join is a pretty free choice. This can of course be made easier by limiting his choices of squads. He does have Zealot, but still! I think that the following rule could be cool:
    Gang Tactics: Cordactus can only ever join Reaver Attack Squads. Him and the squad he is in gains the Furious Charge (or maybe Rage, or whatever you feel fits the best).

    1. Thank you! And that is a great idea for a rule! I like the idea of making his squad better or perhaps an area of effect type rule! Furious charge and rage both suit SoH as well!

    2. He could be some sort of "upgrade" for the unit replacing the sergeant.

    3. Possibly, but I would like to be able to use him as the main HQ in some games and making him an upgrade wouldn't allow for this! I am tempted to limit the squads that he could join to just Reavers though!

  8. Due to the zeal he shows how about rerolls to hit for him and his squad the turn they charge - sort of based of the 40k chaplain hatred rule?!

    1. Thanks Andrew, as a chaplain he has the Zealot special rule already. This is the rule that allows 40k chaplains to re-roll misses in the first round of a combat!

    3. Great idea! He can technical only deep strike via a drop pod but he could potential add the no scatter to a dreadclaw drop pod or perhaps gain the deep strike special rule allowing him and a squad of reavers to do so!

  9. He looks great! The golds are superb!

    How about improves reserves rollS to reflect his expectional planning of spear tip attacks. Also adds Lupercal or death: adds an additional +1 attack and +1 initiative and must re-roll misses to a reaver squad he joins for the first combat in the battle.

  10. I'd go with the rules in book four Conquest page 218. There are many ideas how to build a unique character for your army, without getting out of hand. And it's fun to make. I did it myself just yesterday for a coming campaign weekend.

    1. Though I feel the rules you mention can make for a great campaign, especially when playing in a more competitive environment, I still feel that it gets a bit too standardized. When playing a campaign with friends just for the fun of it, I think that getting a bit out of hand can sometimes make for a great moments (as long as there is a homemade-rules-consensus). This of course has its limits. We don't want str D hits from all models in the army, but going out of the norm to add more flavor to a friendly game is very much permitted in my book ("Zyntax Heresy Book One: Happy Fun Times")! ;)

    2. Thanks Tim! It's been I while since I have looked at conquest character creator and it could be a good place to start! As Zyntax says though I want him to have a unique set of rules to reflect his fluff on the table. Much like forgeworld add unique rules to all there named characters. This will make him more fun to play and give any army he joins a different feel! Plus we Bunnies love the to represent the fluff on the tabletop! You are right Zyntax that it needs to be done in agreement with the group you play with and I don't want him to be overpowered but have a nice balance that reflects the fluff above and isn't a rule that every character could have!
