30 Years of Space Marines - Imperial Space Marine and Index Astartes

Howdy Guys and Girls!

Happy Birthday Space Marines! 30 Years - that's older than me. Today I want to review the new model and the Index Astartes: Apocrypha for you. The birthday party itself wasn't really that awesome, but my local store owner raffled some RTB01 Sprues and posters, buttons and so on. No cake though, sadly.

The Imperial Space Marine 2016

I really like the look of the model, it shows what stuff GW can do these days, and how they can modify old designs with a new look - pretty much what Forgeworld does with their resin models too!

Little fact behind his legs - the original design and models had these "boots" and funny knees indeed, but they weren't producible in plastic back then. Hence they got re-worked and we got the "classic" mark VI legs we know and love today.

The model has an alternate shoulder pad, and I think he could also work great for conversions. Drake and me had a chat about Death Guard Seekers the other day ...

I got more than one, but my first will be a Black Shield Vigilator!

The rules are in the box, sadly just for 40k, and just for Codex: Space Marines. But the fluff indicates that these weapons were used during 30k, and I'll ask FW if we will see more Disintegration weapons in the future.

Review: Index Astartes - Apocrypha

My local store got only 1 book. and I got my hands on that (sneeky me!). It's really awesome if you are a fan of old artwork and fluff, especially if you missed out on these WD articles.

An Imperial Jetbike! Forgeworld - we want that design!

Marneus Calgar with dinosaur pets.

Classic Ultramarines

A nice little detail - the Furibundus is labelled as "Destroyer Dreadnought". The designations for both Contemptor and Deredeo fits their FW versions, so maybe we will see the Furibundus with some phosphex gear?

I love that classic Space Wolves scheme!

My personal highlight - Bill Kings old short story about the Siege of Terra, aswell as the Siege of Terra text from the HH boardgame. Two of the best articles I've ever read, and it's awesome to have it back (you could read the HH boardgame article back then on GW's old homepage, but they deleted the pdf file).

There is so much more in it - the Badab War, Traitor Legions or the history of power armour, among other stuff. Do I like the book? A lot! If you are a fan of that old style and missed out back then, it's worth it's money.

What did you got for the Space Marine's 30th Birthday? Write us in the comments below :)

regards,
Lady Atia

  1. I got the mini free. With the knight game preorder. Just need to think which house I'll build. Already have some Makabuis, so maybe taranis, does anyone know the 30k colours?

That book looks great, but as I have most the stuff in rogue trader, the compilation, the compendium etc., I'm not to bothered that it sold out in the uk online shop buy 11am....

    1. I also ordered the Knight game - pretty good value, especially today when you get a Imperial SM for free with it!

Maybe the FW metallic red scheme (as in the HH masterclass book) could work for Taranis? Probably a good idea to ask FW via facebook about them!

Wow, the book already sold out? Glad I got the only one my local got then ^^

    2. I've wondered about Taranis too. In 'Mechanicum' they're described as dark blue.

Could be that they changed to red later or could just be an oversight.

    3. Yeah, I think we will know for sure once they released the Mars Black book. Although I think to remember they changed the dark blue to red in the later re-prints of Mechanicum?

    4. The book is on the black library website as an ebook so you can get the images and fluff that way

    5. Got an answer from FW. They referenced a picture from the codex... They did say it may have changed in the intervening years.

I have the e-book of mechanicum so I'll read through it and find out.

    6. Is the e-book the latest version though? Let me know about this, Knights are awesome ^_^

(I still think to remember they said the colour was one of the early errors they made, like Mark VI armour in BftA or other stuff)

    1. I feel your pain.

I was looking forward to cake at the birthday bash in January.

I bought one of those massive slices of cake from bugmans. Then they came round with the free cake and I was too stuffed to eat any.

  5. Doubt I'm going to be able to grab one. No GW in Idaho and I doubt I'll be able to order one if they're going that fast! Really want the book though.
Enjoy guys, can't wait to see them!

  7. Can you order these from the online GW store? There isn't a local one near me so only way for me to get one is to order online

  8. The Apocrypha book is AMAZING. I can't believe they reprinted the Index Astartes article with the half-eldar chief Librarian. BTW, Marneus Calgar's 'dinosaur pets' are actually Tyrannic War trophies, I believe.

    1. Yep, I actually liked that bit, especially as he was also an astropath!

Hehe good idea with tyranic war trophies. They are still cute (although 'Nids are also cute ;D)

    1. If you ordered the Renegade game via their site you got one for free (since it was over 100 pounds). But the models may have all sold out by now :<

  11. What did I get for the Space Marine's 30th Birthday? Absolutely nothing because it sold out ridiculously fast by the afternoon. Not impressed with GW this time. Not everyone can be online at 10 when things are put up. With that much hype over the past weeks its a fairly poor performance to run out that quickly.

    1. I was surprised that for a big birthday celebration, my local GW store only got like 1 copy each of the new codex supplements and pyschic cards. What a joke.

  12. I still want a dreadnought with a jump pack as an option. That would be tremendous fun.

    1. Yep! Would also fit the possible destroyer theme of the Furibundus? Kind of a fast assault dreadnought with phosphex and other rad stuff?

  13. One of the first miniatures I ever bought, which was before I truly even knew what Rogue Trader or Warhammer 40k was, was a Techmarine on a jetbike. I just liked buying and painting miniatures, walked into a hobby store and thought this looks neat. Even cooler to me was the marine was posed so he had one hand on the jetbike controls, and the other reaching back holding on to a big ass wrench. I wish I knew where that thing ended up.
