Adeptus Titanicus: Matched Play Guide review

Hi all

Games Workshop have sent this supplement to us to review.

So you all know how much we love Adeptus Titanicus, in fact we are going to the upcoming Titan Owners Club full scaled Walk in November.

This supplement offers guidelines and advice for organising,
setting up and running your own Adeptus Titanicus events,
whether that is tournaments and gaming weekends, or events
held at your local gaming club. The aim of this book is to provide a codified set of rules and suggestions that enable both players and Tournament Organisers to tailor their games as they see fit. It is designed as a primer for running Adeptus Titanicus events and is intended to work alongside other methods of play, such as Narrative Play or Open Play, to offer a new gaming experience for all players.

I was a bit unsure why this book needed to be written at first so will reserve my judgement until the end :)
This book builds on the matched play rules provided in the Adeptus Titanicus Rulebook.

It doubles down on the fact that previously listed Auxiliary units are still rare when selecting them.
Support Titans;
Dire Wolf Heavy Scout Titan
Warbringer Nemesis Titan
Warmaster Heavy Battle Titan
Warmaster Iconoclast Heavy Battle Titan

And Auxiliary Knight Banners;
Acastus Knight Banners
Acastus Knight Asterius Banners

Stratagem Hand:
This is different in Organised Play. Stratagems are chosen when building your battle group based on the sizes of game and remain the same over the whole event, these then go into your “Stratagem Hand”.  This is different depending on Battle level of the games set by the event Organisers.

Then the Stratagem points in the game varies from game size to game size (and the opponent gets boons if you decide to take multiple Titan Legions in your list etc).
These points can be spent in the game as you see fit from the Stratagems in your Hand.
I like this :)

The book also allows for Doubles, but they are mostly aimed at taking it in turns as you see best between you and your friend’s Titans.  But there are some cool maps!

There is also a new set of Rules references with points at the back of the book including further confirmation in Arcs of weapons such as the Carapace mounted Warbringer Weapons which went from Corridor to Arc to corridor (over the last Legio books) and firmly remain again in corridor now.

So it’s a great book to have for any who attend or run AT events, and want to do it by the Specialist Games principles :)

Hector Cephas: What's next?

Hiya everybody,

It's been quite a while since I last posted here prior to the Heresy 2.0 previews (23rd June 2019!!!) so we're certainly overdue a catch-up on what has been going on with my various projects and what I've got in the pipeline for the foreseeable!

When I last blogged on here, I was mid-flow with my Thousand Sons, with plans to put together a "small" militia/solar auxilia force to form up the Prospero Spireguard. Unfortunately, that project has somewhat stalled - I still have everything for it etc but I ran out of hobby mojo so a lot of things came to a halt including that big project. Through out the lockdowns etc in 2020 and 2021, I didn't do much hobby and what I did do was more 40k orientated - got a decent sized Deathwatch force (of which I have about 1.5k points fully painted, everything else is primed and ready whenever I fancy dabbling in it) that has appeared at a couple of doubles events at Warhammer World now and that is pretty much the extent of the hobby I did in that period.

2022 however has been a surprisingly productive year to date:

  1. Adeptus Titanicus - originally posted about doing Legio Defensor however I ended up going with Legio Ignatum/House Taranis like I originally planned to, I've got 2 Warlords, 4 Reavers, 1 Warmaster, 3 Knight Lancers and 1 Acastus painted up for that!

  2. Warhammer 40k - I have a Necron army built awaiting priming for the most part; I have started painting some of them but am becoming less of a fan of the paint scheme sadly. Fortunately it's quite early days so I can restart that proper when the mood takes me.

  3. Horus Heresy 1.0 - Assembled and primed a Shattered Legion list as what I have wanted to do (and I don't believe we can do this yet in 2.0 but hoping that this changes in future expansions) is put together an army representing the defenders of Sotha (so Polux (with some Fists), Dantioch, and some Ultramarines) together as a single fighting force which I think would be quite fun to play.

"So then Hector, which are you going to get done first? Is it one of the three options above? Or are you finally going to get your Spireguard done?"

*cough* Well, urm, technically number 3 but... I'm actually fully investing into an Ultramarine Legion rather than just a small token force... With the new starter set, it made it pretty hard to not consider a new legion as you get a lot in it, more than you'd want in an allied detachment too so you kinda have to just go for it really (or at least that's my excuse!). I also somewhat trapped myself by writing the review for the Ultramarines on here, the more I wrote about them the more I realised "actually, I really like the Ultramarines; 40k poster boys be damned, these guys rock"

"OK then, so what are you planning to work on?"

My list of things I have gone in for is as follows:

HQ/Primarch:

  • Guilliman
  • Ultramarine Praetor in Artificer Armour - I've converted him into a breacher praetor
  • Ultramarine Praetor in Cataphractii Terminator Armour - will remain a praetor/champion/delegatus as required
  • Praetor in Terminator Armour - converting into a legion herald
  • Chaplain in Power Armour - I think controversially for me, this one might actually stay as a Chaplain!
  • HH 2.0 Loyalist Praetor - converting into a Master of Signal
  • HH 2.0 Traitor Praetor - thinking possibly a Librarian or something, not entirely decided yet
  • Warhammer World Exclusive Command Rhino

Troops:

  • 2x MkIV Tactical Squad (20 men each)
  • 1x MkVI Tactical Squad (20 men again)

Elites:

  • 1x Invictarus Suzerain Squad - 9 men; strange number but these were part of my Shattered Legion force when you could only put 10 men in a Land Raider; likely will be taken as a retinue for my breacher praetor or Guilliman himself
  • 1x Fulmentarus Terminators - 10 men; converting these from the HH 2.0 set of terminators, I have sourced 10 cyclone missile launchers so I am looking forward to getting these guys on the table!
  • 1x Praetorian Guard - 10 men; I'm a sucker for these breachers, they're so cool!
  • 2/3x Contemptor Dreadnought - I have got 2 of the new plastic dreadnoughts (adopted a stray from someone else) and a Forge World Ultramarine Dreadnought body to mix parts into the plastic ones or I might be able to make a 3rd if I can work out what I do about the elbow bits

Fast Attack

  • 2x Xiphon Pattern Interceptor - stolen from my 1k sons (they're keeping the Fire Raptor mind!)

Heavy Support:

  • 1x Heavy Support Squad - 10 men, missiles
  • 2x Sicaran Arcus
  • 1x Spartan Assault Tank
  • 2x Warhammer World Exclusive Command Land Raider (will be normal Land Raiders but mixing in bits from these into the Spartan as well to bling them all up a bit!)

So as you can see, plenty to get on with and at the moment I have a lot of motivation to get these done so look forward to seeing more of these appearing in future posts over the coming months. Feel free to leave a comment; if you would like me to go over my other projects in a bit more detail then please let me know and I can put up a post about them if that is something that would interest you!

Until next time,

Hector Cephas

Adeptus Titanicus: Dire Wolf video review and Battle Report

Hi all

Following on from Yesterday’s coverage, Lauren and I had a game with the Dire Wolf Titans (with both Weapon configurations).
This is our first attempt at a Battle Report on YouTube, so please don’t expect Spielberg!
We will be looking at improving our format soon too :)

Adeptus Titanicus: Dire Wolf review

Hi all

We were fortunate enough to be sent 2 of the new Dire Wolfs for review. We will cover assembly, design, painting and gaming in this article. So this is our journey with them in the last two weeks.

Assembly.
Firstly the detail on the Titans is very high. Honey the Destroyer and I were marvelling at the detail especially around the rivets. We have multiple Maniples in the house as well as 2x full 5x Titan 28mm scale maniples, so we aren’t strangers to the Omnissiah’s God Engines.
So as with most Titans we started with assembling the Torso, weapon mounts (not Weapons) and rear engine housing. The reason for this is, this is the least dynamic part on any Titan, built helps when it comes to positioning the legs and working out balance. This all went together really well.
Then onto the legs. Honey wanted the Dire Wolf to look like it’s trailing foot had just left the floor (so with straight toes), which she managed to do really well. I watched her do this as I was in the middle of a game of Ash Wastes nearby with Luke da Simple Painter.
There was a lot of cursing as she tried to get it balanced, and the pistons in the right place. But in the end she managed it. To get the Titan standing tall she would need to have the rear leg pistons fully extended, so we filled the rear pistons with green stuff, and cut off the minuscule bleed over. This is the point I think we both realised that it was not. Really a dynamic Titan and the rear ankle pistons pretty much back this up, that it is best to pose it braced for firing.
So then I had a go at mine, and hated every second of it. So the first thing I was planning to do was to cut the front toes on the trailing foot, and assemble them so it was mid step off the base. Then after looking carefully at the pistons on the base I realised, they did not make sense and technically they can’t bend. The piston brace on the front two toes are locked in place, as is the main hydraulic housing on the body. So any bending of the front toes would bend and likely break the whole hydraulic system for the front toes. Even though they are hinged underneath. Now the only thing I can think of is that the foot housing itself actuates and pivots on a joint too up and down but there is no joint pin for this visible from the external side of the foot. Sooo, without wanting to desecrate the Omnissiah’s holy design I decided to pose it instead like it was mid run and swinging it’s leg forward. Hopefully this whole toe fiasco is explained away if they do a 28mm version.
It would have been great/better if Forge World had provided longer ankle pistons (or better designed ones) and some bending mid step toes so we had a better option with them for posing.
Then it was onto the cables underneath the Ardex Vulcan Mega Bolters. These unfortunately also reduce the range of movement for the Titan, so it can’t be pivoting on its waist gyro too much before it’s cables are passing the top of the thigh (with no real way to pass it due to thickness).
The other thing I didn’t like about the design is that the top of the thighs/hips where they meet the pelvis need to be mostly glued in place as the hip actuators are already mounted on the main waist component. So on the model you shouldn’t technically be able to open the hips out.
Anyway we carried on and mounted the guns last.

I actually kept a bit of sprue on my hydraulics (which were hidden in the holes upon assembly) to make it taller :)

Painting.
The models were great to paint. This is where Honey_the_destroyer (Lauren) and I actually started to like the little blighters. So as they slowly donned our Legio’s colours, they started to properly fit in with the rest of the Maniple, so much so we began to welcome and get excited about them.

Gaming.
Sooooo we have/will have a video on YouTube today, and we are looking at improving how we do battle reports (so bare with us lol as we are a bit out of our comfort zones with them lol).
The optional deployment rule was great fun to game with as we actually managed to get both 50% obscured and close to the enemy’s deployment zone. It’s worth noting that if both sides have a Dire Wolf, the second to be deployed, is greatly restricted in where it can deploy as it would also need to be 50% obscured from the Dire Wolf which was placed first.
Volcano Cannon: I actually managed to get the Dire Wolf to pop a Reaver which had taken damage, on it’s first Walk. At short range it has +1 accuracy, so it is hitting on 2+ which is a big help as they are such an Alpha Strike model.
Neutron Laser: this was especially fun to see what it was capable of.
So Lauren set it up so it could target a Warhound, even though it has a 30” short range with +1 accuracy which could cover most of the board, Lauren wanted to see how it would play by shutting down as many Titans as possible, so side or rear armour would be more achievable with a S7 weapon.
So let’s look at some stats against a (assuming the Dire Wolf would be in 30”):
Warhound: Hit on 2+, 1:2 chance of hitting Body or legs (armour 10) would mean you need to roll a 3+ on armour damage to hopefully utilise the shock trait to shut it down, followed by a 3+ if it causes a destructive or devastating hit (or 6+ if superficial) to actually shut it down. Weapon hits are good also as they are averagely AV9.

Reaver: Hit on 2+, 1:3 chance of hitting Body (armour 10) or legs/head (armour 11) would mean you need to roll a 3+ on armour damage (or 4+ if legs and head) to hopefully utilise the shock trait to shut it down, followed by a 3+ if it causes a destructive or devastating hit (or 6+ if superficial) to actually shut it down.
Weapon hits are ok also as they are averagely AV10.

Warbringer: Hit on 2+, 1:2 chance of hitting Body or legs (armour 11) would mean you need to roll a 4+ on armour damage to hopefully utilise the shock trait to shut it down, followed by a 3+ if it causes a destructive or devastating hit (or 6+ if superficial) to actually shut it down. Weapon hits are ok also as they are averagely AV10.

Warlord: Hit on 2+, 1:3 chance of hitting Body (armour 12) or legs/head (armour 13) would mean you need to roll a 5+ on armour damage (or 6+ if legs and head) to hopefully utilise the shock trait to shut it down, followed by a 3+ if it causes a destructive or devastating hit (or 6+ if superficial) to actually shut it down.
Weapon hits are risky also as they are averagely AV11.

Warmaster: Hit on 2+, 1:3 chance of hitting Body (armour 12) or legs/head (armour 13) would mean you need to roll a 5+ on armour damage (or 6+ if legs and head) to hopefully utilise the shock trait to shut it down, followed by a 3+ if it causes a destructive or devastating hit (or 6+ if superficial) to actually shut it down.
Weapon hits are risky also as they are averagely AV12.

So initially it’s good to use it to target Warhounds and maybe Reavers. You could do really good with it and hit a Warhound in a Squadron, getting the shutdown order for one, thereby reducing the overall shields of the Squadron itself.
Later in the game (if it has survived long enough) you could go after the wounded bigger Titans, utilising the higher accuracy gun to actually target weaker or damaged components for a 4+ hit and better chance of getting that big game shutdown.
When it comes to receiving damage, they are quite durable, so don’t wrap them up in cottonwool the entire game, have a go at holding them back and first firing (hopefully keeping 1-2 Titans in arc, so if you put one to sleep in first fire, you can have a follow up target to put to sleep too).

Overall, great fun to game with, whole new dynamic and shakes the game up a bit. Variety with Titans is always great, so let’s hope there are more coming.

Thanks again for the sample.

Adeptus Titanicus Warmaster Iconoclast Titan started

Hi all

A massive thank you to Games Workshop for the review copy of the new Iconoclast Warmaster Titan.

This copy has caused a good debate in our household in terms of how effective this would be on the gaming table. What I really like about it is that you have the plasma blastguns mounted in the shoulders as an option (and the Cruciator Gatling Array as a decent shield stripper) as well as the close range weapons which I think makes it much more playable than I originally thought as it’s still not a fast moving Titan so getting it in hand to hand is going to take some work. However the close quarter weapons look pretty intense so if you do manage to charge it in, it’s going to cause some serious damage.

Drake disagrees, he still thinks a full set of long range weapons are preferable on this Titan. I can’t wait to get it built and painted and on the board for a trial to see the outcome!

Also if you weren’t so keen on the head options in the original Warmaster box, the Iconoclast comes with 5 different head options!! I think Drake will be raiding my head varieties for his (and seeing if he can utilise any parts for his Warmaster) …And yes, I decided I’d sit in the pub and do some assembly 🤣

Adeptus Titanicus: Loyalist Legios

Hi all

Adeptus Titanicus: Loyalist Legios go on sale today!

So this thick book is a good compendium for the released Loyalist Legios (and Legio Metalica) to date. Procon Vi have also made the book.

The best thing about the book is all of the extra background fluff which is included. It actually starts fleshing out the Legios, something which I thought was distinctly lacking in the previous books.

It also states the Legio’s current Materiel and what they specialise in (much like the Ol’ black books of the Horus Heresy series).

Nemesis, Carnivore, Rapier, Jackal, Apocalypse, Imperator have all been mentioned too. So I am hoping we will be seeing more of these in the future.
It also once again mentions Legio Destructor as being the biggest Loyalist Legio

I do get the feeling this is possibly book one of at least a couple for each faction, as both Victorum and Destructor are still not on the scene.

Procon Vi are stunning. The colours are subtle but absolutely great.

The Warmaster is also very prevalent in the book which is great, and there are 2 pages of fluff about it.

And it does look Damn sexy in Gryphonicus colours!

Order the book today!

Legio Fureans - Adeptus Titanicus

Hello!

If you read my last post you will know that I painted my Zone Mortalis board and it pretty much killed my drive to get anything painted!

But then came a new game!

I was not very high on the prospect of Adeptus Titanicus, however Drake invited me to join him for a tester game. I pretty much fell in love with straight away! I was really impressed by the rule set and how fun it was to play. Needless to say I ending up ordering the Grand Master addition of the game!!

The quality of the game had me really excited to get painting again and so as some as I had it a set about getting the Warlord Titans done. I had settled on Legio Fureans, their aggressive nature fitting my style of play, plus the scheme looked like fun to paint.

So here it is the model that brought back my hobby mojo!

And with the base completed;

I now own 2 Warlords, 6 Reavers and 10 Warhounds!! Which are all started but this Warlord stands as the only fully completed model in my mini Legio! Overall very happy with how he looks and looking forward to completing the rest...at some point! Night Lords are currently distracting me form these guys!

What are your Legio's of choice and your thoughts on the game?

Hector Cephas - Titans Primed

Hi everybody,

I luckily managed to catch a day of good weather and had one heck of a priming session! 8 Reavers, 8 Warhounds, 6 Cerastus Knights and all of the weapon options for these and the extra weapons from the Warlord Plasma Annihilator sprues.

On top of this I also had to prime all the armour plates for the reavers, warhounds and the additionals from the upgrade sprues...

That was one very productive day involving 3 and a bit cans of primer to do it but completely worth the effort as now I can crack on with painting everything now at my leisure. I managed to prime everything else a few months back so this is basically the last of the priming until I start work on the AT scenery I have. Next thing on the list, start painting titan frames.

Apologies if this is not such an interesting post, I was just pretty proud of the fact that I managed get this all sorted in a day.

Until next time,

Hector Cephas

Warlord (1)

Reaver (2)

Cerastus Knight Lancer (2)

Questoris Knight (6)

Warhound (2)

It took me a while to work out how I was going to generate the names but what I ended up doing was spending a lot of time skimming through Magic the Gathering white holy themed cards and the bible and built a dictionary of words which I could use. From this dictionary, I created around 40 different names, all of them unique and not combinations of each other; I figured the translation process to "High Gothic" would mean that I would have to use synonyms and therefore similar names may actually translate as exactly the same in. In regards to translating, that was pretty easy, Google translate English -> Latin and then tweak using synonyms and such.

As mentioned, I have about 40 names total so I have another 20+ names which could potentially be useful for the rest of my titans - there are some particularly grandiose but not dripping with religious reference names that I can use for those but I want to see what legio I end up with first!

Until next time,

Hector Cephas

Hector Cephas - Reavers and Knights Built

Hi everyone!

I've finished building the last of my titans and knights  well, at least until further cerastus variants are released to bolster my support banners and dominus maniples. The reavers are the new melta cannon variant that were made with the different head; the good thing is that it is only one sprue different to the older reaver so they can be magnetised in the same way and the weapons are entirely interchangeable so a bit of win in that regard. I really like the look of the melta cannon and the chain fist combo for an aggressive close-range attacker

I've built all 6 of my lancers along with all the weapons from the plasma annihilator upgrade sprue - now my warlords have some variety in terms of weapons and armour paneling like the rest of my titans.

Did any of you buy the warlord upgrade sprues by themselves or did you buy the plasma annihilator warlord titan kit (or both)?

Until next time!

Hector Cephas
