Rogal Dorn; the Finale

Hi all,

After a slow couple of weeks trying to work on the cloak (and eventually succeeding), I've managed to finish off the rest of Dorn and his scenic base:

Over the week leading up to our Weekly Progress Report post I managed to finish off the rest of the armour and managed to find some time to work on Rogal's head and start the work on his gaming base so that he is ready to arrive on the battle field in all of his glory. I'm really pleased with how he has turned out - it was quite intimidating and took me a while as a result but definitely worth the effort.

As mentioned before, I changed the recipe for the cloak - rather than going from a purple base I started red instead as I couldn't get the blend to work and decided to just stick with what I knew which made things a lot easier and meant I could focus on improving my edge highlighting on the armour instead.

For reference, if you want to replicate what I have done and I believe this is the same way that GW recommend painting Custodians using Citadel paints, the colours are as follows:

Gold armour:
  1. Retributor Armour (base)
  2. Riekland Fleshshade (shade)
  3. Auric Armour Gold (layer)
  4. Liberator Gold (highlight)
  5. Stormhost Silver (ex. highlight)
Red detailing (cloak, Storms Teeth casing):
  1. Mephiston Red (base)
  2. Agrax Earthshade (shade)
  3. Mephiston Red (layer)
  4. Evil Suns Scarlet (highlight)
  5. Wild Rider Red (ex. highlight)
Bolter grip and tabard detailing:
  1. Zandri Dust (base)
  2. Agrax Earthshade (shade)
  3. Ushabti Bone (layer/highlight)
Bolter casing and armour seals:
  1. Abbadon Black (base)
  2. Eshin Grey (highlight)
Exposed cables, gun barrel, etc.:
  1. Leadbelcher (base)
  2. Nuln Oil (shade)
  3. Stormhost Silver (highlight)
Skin:
  1. Bugmans Glow (base)
  2. Riekland Fleshshade (shade)
  3. Cadian Fleshtone (layer)
  4. Kislev Flesh (highlight)
Hair
  1. Eshin Grey (base)
  2. Nuln Oil (shade)
  3. White Scar (layer -> highlight)
Base
  1. Administratum Grey (dry)
  2. Ulthuan Grey (dry)
Next job in the queue is my Mechanicum again but I think I will need to sort out a picture of my entire Imperial Fists legion as Rogal is now complete and we haven't seen them all assembled in one place before now have we?

Until next time!

Rogal Dorn; part 3

Hi guys,

It's good to be back in the UK! I'm making more progress on the cloak now - the main thing is that I have changed my recipe for the cloak.

In theory the way I originally planned it could have worked but I was having some real difficulty trying to get the transitions right so I've gone back and pretty much started it again. I'm going closer to the recipe Duncan used for the How to paint Skitarii Rangers video he did a while back for Warhammer TV.

  1. Mephiston Red Base
  2. Agrax Earthshade
  3. Mephiston Red Layer
  4. Evil Suns Scarlet Layer/Highlight
  5. Wild Rider Red Highlight

As you probably can tell, the pictures above I've done steps 1 and 2 and I'm going to be making a start later on laying up the Mephiston again. Hopefully I will have more to show tomorrow for the progress report tomorrow as I also hope to start layering up the armour too.

As you may recall from the previous post, I mentioned before about my fingers getting in the way when working on the cloak. Now this isn't such a problem as I got myself some blu-tac and some mini bamboo skewers and voila, I can now keep my grubby fingers off the paintwork while I'm painting away!

Next time I post, Rogal should be looking a lot more complete - we are getting to the point now that the pre-highlighting assembly stage is imminent!

Rogal Dorn; part 2

Hi all,

I thought it's about time I give you another update on how Rogal Dorn is progressing - particularly as I'm planning to escape Storm Emma's "wrath" and enjoy a nice weekend away in Budapest!

As you can see, he is a bit more complete looking than last time. As I mentioned in the Weekly Progress Report, I intended to jump onto doing the cloak but I decided since then to do the shading instead as now that I have got my Citadel Painting Handle, I think it makes more sense for me to get some of the model builtSo far, I have completed most of the shading apart from Rogal's hair and the grip and wing decor on the Voice of Terra.

Unlike with Angron where I pretty much painted him in a week because I felt I could get away with drybrushing his armour, I do seem to be taking my time with Rogal as there are a lot of details that I want to make sure I get right and since I have shaded the model, those details have become a lot more prominent. I am somewhat intimidated by the project if I'm honest as I'm not a great painter - I'm just good at "cheat" methods and getting reasonable table top standard results in short order but I feel I have to really up my game here.

Once I'm back from Budapest, I think I really need to get cracking with the cloak - will need to use some blu-tac and stick it to something as it was proving fiddly to shade as is and I can't risk wrecking the detailing when I start layering it up.

What do you guys think so far?

Rogal Dorn; part 1

Hiya!

Finally, I have him, my Primarch, the final piece of my Imperial Fists puzzle (until I decide to get a new thunderhawk)!

Simon has done a fantastic job with him - I am incredibly happy with the pose and everything, he's what I expected to be: the general, the tactician - he's not a fighting machine like Corax or Curze is so I was glad he has been modeled in a more contemplative and analyzing pose like as though he is taking stock of the battle in front him and working out what the Imperial Fists next move it.

So, as you may have seen, I made a start on painting him last week and I've slowly but surely been making progress. At the moment I am still basecoating him as I want to make sure I get it right. There's some work to be done on the non-golds on him but I've planned how I'm going to paint him now:

Gold armour:

  1. Retributor Armour
  2. Riekland Fleshshade
  3. Auric Armour Gold
  4. Liberator Gold
  5. Stormhost Silver

Red detailing (cloak, Storms Teeth casing):

  1. Screamer Pink
  2. Druchii Violet
  3. Mephiston Red
  4. Wazdakka Red
  5. Evil Suns Scarlet
Bolter grip and tabard detailing:
  1. Zandri Dust
  2. Agrax Earthshade
  3. Ushabti Bone

Bolter casing and armour seals:
  1. Abbadon Black
  2. Eshin Grey

Exposed cables, gun barrel, etc.:

  1. Leadbelcher
  2. Nuln Oil
  3. Stormhost Silver

Skin:

  1. Bugmans Glow
  2. Riekland Fleshshade
  3. Cadian Fleshtone
  4. Kislev Flesh

I imagine this is going to keep me busy for a while but I don't mind, I want to make sure I do this beautiful model justice!

Until next time,

Hector Cephas
