Horus Heresy: Imperial Fists Preview

Hi everyone,

I'm continuing on with our Legion reviews today by talking about my favourite legion, the Imperial Fists.

Legion Trait

The legion trait is a little bit different compared to the original legion rules from the previous edition (spoiler alert: there are a lot of little changes ahead!) - the main buff giving a +1 to hit rolls for bolt weapons which is pretty much what we had before (previously it was +1 BS which is a subtle difference but hardly came into play really) but what has come as a surprise is that this now also affects auto weapons so auto cannon heavy squads might see more use in imperial fist lists for instance which will be interesting to see. One thing I am a little sad about is that we appear to have lost our tank hunter buff on heavy support squads, that was a nice way to have discount imitation iron havocs but it's not a deal breaker for me!

Advanced reaction

I really like this advanced reaction - basically a once per game counter charge, I think that will be a handy little deterrent from opportunistic movements and really adds to the more defensive nature of the legion. Makes me think of Legio Ignatum's punish their folly stratagem as that makes people think twice about getting that charge off.

Warlord Traits

The traits are pretty interesting, each grant an additional reaction in a phase but in the case of the loyalist only one its one additional reaction in any one phase but limited to being used on the warlord's unit - very flexible and handy if you have a meaty bodyguard unit for your warlord (particularly as this one also improves the units weapon skill too). The other non-allegiance based traits for the legion are quite interesting too. I look forward to giving them a go, particularly "Architect of Devastation" as that could be particularly powerful with how it interacts with our legion trait.

Rites of War

We appear to have three rites of war now - Hammerfall Strike Force is pretty much what it was before and the Stone Gauntlet is mostly what it was (it now grants re-rollable invun saves on your boarding shields instead of improving toughness and now Phalanx Warders are the compulsory troops choice rather than standard breachers - I might have to get some now). The new rite of war is Templar Assault which is focused around making Templar Brethren your main troops and giving some buffs to them in addition to them becoming scoring - this was a great choice to add as previously templar brethren were always pretty good but were just kind of just there if you wanted to take Sigismund whereas now there is more of an incentive to build an army around them which is really cool!

Armoury and Consul

Our armoury is very much like what is was before - assault cannons, storm shields, solarite power gauntlet, teleporter upgrade for terminators and characters. The thing that interests me here is the Castellan legion consul - a heavy weapon independent character which makes all of our heavy support squads line (and therefore scoring). Yet another awesome fluffy addition to the legion which empathises on bringing more of our heavy weapons teams to bear - I do kind feel this might also be the reason why our heavy support squads don't have tank hunters anymore, having that and them being scoring would make for a pretty brutal objective holder and I am okay with this change, this put more emphasis on taking foot slogging weapon teams than just taking tanks as heavy support.

Rogal Dorn

Rogal doesn't look too different to what he was like before. Now that we have Templar Assault, it was understandable that Rogal now doesn't have the ability to make Templars troops anymore but what he has gained in it's place is pretty cool - whenever anything charges him, it counts as a disordered charge so he denies charge bonuses which is pretty snacky and goes hand in hand with him being the master of defence. Everything else looks pretty much like it was before.

Special units

Phalanx Warders are pretty awesome now - particularly with the additional love they have received in the rite of war department - squads of 10-20, gain +1 WS when receiving a charge like before (more on this later!) and improve their invun saves when bunched up (much like how the +1 toughness buff worked in the old Stone Gauntlet rite of war). They are also movement 7 so they are surprisingly quick for a breacher squad. They are a real solid choice now and I can see these guys appearing more on the battle field - I might need to get some as despite the size of my collection, I actually don't have any yet!

Templar Brethren have gained an additional wound like most other elites seem to have done, other than that they are pretty much identical to what they were before - solid melee monsters that can cut down marine units like they are nothing. Again, they've got some love now through the new Rite of War so we'll see a lot more of these guys too no doubt!

Warlords

Sigismund is pretty much the same as he was: an absolute monster in duels, gains VPs for killing enemy warlords (and other bonuses) and brings templars in as troops (but notably do not give them line like Templar Assault does which means that it still has value if you decide you want to use it but also want Sigismund as a HQ anyway).

Fafnir has not really changed either from his initial release (not exactly surprising!) so can still do his swapping between both axes and sword/axe at will, defensive hammer of wrath, grants +1 WS to breachers and phalanx warders when they charge (if he's the warlord) etc.

Alexis Polux... wow, ok, some great quality of life changes have been made to this chap. Firstly, now he actually has deep strike so now his Void Commander ability makes sense as he can give a squad he joins deep strike (previously he didn't need to join the unit mind) but now you can re-enact what he did in the Crimson Fist short story! He now has a solarite power gauntlet rather than a power fist so he's gained in the AP department and he has artificer armour so is that little bit more tanky too which is brilliant to see.

Final thoughts

All in all, I am very happy with these new rules - some changes have been made which I originally lamented (the loss of tank hunters was a biggy for me originally before I saw what the Castellan brings to the table combined with our warlord traits) however the Imperial Fists have gained in other areas which more than make up for it. I'm really looking forward to playing these again in the new edition!

Until next time!

Imperial Fists: Fafnir Rann completed.

Hi all

Finished one of the 2 new plastic models being released by Games Workshop for the Horus Heresy range.

As you may have seen, I have started taking tentative steps towards going full Grim Dark.

I sprayed black underneath then Corax white from above. Little bit of white drybrushing. Then a few passes with Avaland Sunsetspray.
Then 2 parts brown mix (1:1 mix of Seraphim Sepia with Lahmian), with 1 part Casandora yellow. This is washed all over.
I then paint trims and Matt Varnish.

After all that I cover the armour in AK interactive streaking grime (I used internals colour), then get it off with cotton wool buds and odourless white spirits until I’m happy.

Rogal Dorn; the Finale

Hi all,

After a slow couple of weeks trying to work on the cloak (and eventually succeeding), I've managed to finish off the rest of Dorn and his scenic base:

Over the week leading up to our Weekly Progress Report post I managed to finish off the rest of the armour and managed to find some time to work on Rogal's head and start the work on his gaming base so that he is ready to arrive on the battle field in all of his glory. I'm really pleased with how he has turned out - it was quite intimidating and took me a while as a result but definitely worth the effort.

As mentioned before, I changed the recipe for the cloak - rather than going from a purple base I started red instead as I couldn't get the blend to work and decided to just stick with what I knew which made things a lot easier and meant I could focus on improving my edge highlighting on the armour instead.

For reference, if you want to replicate what I have done and I believe this is the same way that GW recommend painting Custodians using Citadel paints, the colours are as follows:

Gold armour:
  1. Retributor Armour (base)
  2. Riekland Fleshshade (shade)
  3. Auric Armour Gold (layer)
  4. Liberator Gold (highlight)
  5. Stormhost Silver (ex. highlight)
Red detailing (cloak, Storms Teeth casing):
  1. Mephiston Red (base)
  2. Agrax Earthshade (shade)
  3. Mephiston Red (layer)
  4. Evil Suns Scarlet (highlight)
  5. Wild Rider Red (ex. highlight)
Bolter grip and tabard detailing:
  1. Zandri Dust (base)
  2. Agrax Earthshade (shade)
  3. Ushabti Bone (layer/highlight)
Bolter casing and armour seals:
  1. Abbadon Black (base)
  2. Eshin Grey (highlight)
Exposed cables, gun barrel, etc.:
  1. Leadbelcher (base)
  2. Nuln Oil (shade)
  3. Stormhost Silver (highlight)
Skin:
  1. Bugmans Glow (base)
  2. Riekland Fleshshade (shade)
  3. Cadian Fleshtone (layer)
  4. Kislev Flesh (highlight)
Hair
  1. Eshin Grey (base)
  2. Nuln Oil (shade)
  3. White Scar (layer -> highlight)
Base
  1. Administratum Grey (dry)
  2. Ulthuan Grey (dry)
Next job in the queue is my Mechanicum again but I think I will need to sort out a picture of my entire Imperial Fists legion as Rogal is now complete and we haven't seen them all assembled in one place before now have we?

Until next time!

Rogal Dorn; part 3

Hi guys,

It's good to be back in the UK! I'm making more progress on the cloak now - the main thing is that I have changed my recipe for the cloak.

In theory the way I originally planned it could have worked but I was having some real difficulty trying to get the transitions right so I've gone back and pretty much started it again. I'm going closer to the recipe Duncan used for the How to paint Skitarii Rangers video he did a while back for Warhammer TV.

  1. Mephiston Red Base
  2. Agrax Earthshade
  3. Mephiston Red Layer
  4. Evil Suns Scarlet Layer/Highlight
  5. Wild Rider Red Highlight

As you probably can tell, the pictures above I've done steps 1 and 2 and I'm going to be making a start later on laying up the Mephiston again. Hopefully I will have more to show tomorrow for the progress report tomorrow as I also hope to start layering up the armour too.

As you may recall from the previous post, I mentioned before about my fingers getting in the way when working on the cloak. Now this isn't such a problem as I got myself some blu-tac and some mini bamboo skewers and voila, I can now keep my grubby fingers off the paintwork while I'm painting away!

Next time I post, Rogal should be looking a lot more complete - we are getting to the point now that the pre-highlighting assembly stage is imminent!

Rogal Dorn; part 2

Hi all,

I thought it's about time I give you another update on how Rogal Dorn is progressing - particularly as I'm planning to escape Storm Emma's "wrath" and enjoy a nice weekend away in Budapest!

As you can see, he is a bit more complete looking than last time. As I mentioned in the Weekly Progress Report, I intended to jump onto doing the cloak but I decided since then to do the shading instead as now that I have got my Citadel Painting Handle, I think it makes more sense for me to get some of the model builtSo far, I have completed most of the shading apart from Rogal's hair and the grip and wing decor on the Voice of Terra.

Unlike with Angron where I pretty much painted him in a week because I felt I could get away with drybrushing his armour, I do seem to be taking my time with Rogal as there are a lot of details that I want to make sure I get right and since I have shaded the model, those details have become a lot more prominent. I am somewhat intimidated by the project if I'm honest as I'm not a great painter - I'm just good at "cheat" methods and getting reasonable table top standard results in short order but I feel I have to really up my game here.

Once I'm back from Budapest, I think I really need to get cracking with the cloak - will need to use some blu-tac and stick it to something as it was proving fiddly to shade as is and I can't risk wrecking the detailing when I start layering it up.

What do you guys think so far?

Rogal Dorn; part 1

Hiya!

Finally, I have him, my Primarch, the final piece of my Imperial Fists puzzle (until I decide to get a new thunderhawk)!

Simon has done a fantastic job with him - I am incredibly happy with the pose and everything, he's what I expected to be: the general, the tactician - he's not a fighting machine like Corax or Curze is so I was glad he has been modeled in a more contemplative and analyzing pose like as though he is taking stock of the battle in front him and working out what the Imperial Fists next move it.

So, as you may have seen, I made a start on painting him last week and I've slowly but surely been making progress. At the moment I am still basecoating him as I want to make sure I get it right. There's some work to be done on the non-golds on him but I've planned how I'm going to paint him now:

Gold armour:

  1. Retributor Armour
  2. Riekland Fleshshade
  3. Auric Armour Gold
  4. Liberator Gold
  5. Stormhost Silver

Red detailing (cloak, Storms Teeth casing):

  1. Screamer Pink
  2. Druchii Violet
  3. Mephiston Red
  4. Wazdakka Red
  5. Evil Suns Scarlet
Bolter grip and tabard detailing:
  1. Zandri Dust
  2. Agrax Earthshade
  3. Ushabti Bone

Bolter casing and armour seals:
  1. Abbadon Black
  2. Eshin Grey

Exposed cables, gun barrel, etc.:

  1. Leadbelcher
  2. Nuln Oil
  3. Stormhost Silver

Skin:

  1. Bugmans Glow
  2. Riekland Fleshshade
  3. Cadian Fleshtone
  4. Kislev Flesh

I imagine this is going to keep me busy for a while but I don't mind, I want to make sure I do this beautiful model justice!

Until next time,

Hector Cephas; Imperial Fist Legion Terminators

Hi all,

Today, I'm going to talk about my Imperial Fists terminators - namely my "shooting configuration" terminators.
s

The Imperial Fists are an interesting legion in gaming terms. We don't have a legion specific terminator unit unlike most legions, instead we have more options for our standard terminator units. We are the only legion with access to a proper storm shield (the Salamanders one only boosts a models existing invulnerable save after all), we have access to assault cannons (the Blood Angels also can use these too) and teleport transponders that allow us to deep strike.

My shooting configuration terminators make good use of assault cannons and combi-bolters to threaten targets as they either march up the battlefield or deep strike behind enemy lines. In cataphractii terminator armour, they can take a lot of punishment while they can deal with infantry and most vehicles at range and in close combat and certainly deal it back.

When Polux takes to the field, I normally give him a retinue of terminators in this configuration which you might view as an odd choice. I could stick him in a squad of terminators with storm shields and make use of the stone gauntlet rite of war to boost his toughness but I prefer to be more flexible than that. Storm shields make you more resilient but you need to get into close combat before you start to shine - Polux is odd as he is the exception to this rule, he also has ranged capability so he can threaten outside of close combat so he fits perfectly into this kind of squad.

I love this squad, I really do; they have great range and melee capability and as a result of that they draw a lot of attention and die horribly - particularly when Polux is with them. However, that is an awful lot of attention being drawn away from the rest of my army which is no bad thing.

Until next time,

Hector Cephas

7th Legion - Imperial Fists

Hi all,

Todays post is about the Imperial Fists. This is my first legion, most certainly not the last but I do have huge plans for this legion before I move onto my next legion project.

Since I started writing for the Bunnies, I've shown you all a few of my squads and how I use them in-game - namely, my legion breachers and my assault marines. To give you an idea of what I have completed and will show you all in due course, along side any new units I add to my legion, here's a list of what I have completed (though not exhaustive!):
  • 1x Alexis Polux
  • 1x Sigismund
  • 2x 15 man tactical squads
  • 2x 20 man siege breacher squads
  • 1x 20 man assault squad
  • 1x 10 man templar brethren squad
  • 1x 10 man cataphractii terminator squad (shooting config)
  • 1x 10 man cataphractii terminator squad (thunder hammer/storm shield)
  • 1x 10 man heavy support squad (missile launchers)
  • 3x Legion Quad Launchers
  • 2x MkIIB Land Raiders
  • 1x Spartan
  • 2x Rhino APCs
  • 3x Vindicator Siege Tanks
  • 1x Fire Raptor
  • 1x Legion Falchion

I'll get around to posting more about some of these in the next few months as they're lovely models that I'd like to share plus I like to also discuss the tactical application of such squads and how they fit in my armies. I also have a whole bunch of character models as I love converting characters - these guys may feature in future campaigns!

I originally started with the Siege of Terra in mind with my list; initially I focused on my Legion Breachers with some Cataphractii Terminators and the MkIIB Land Raiders that I had already bought for 40k and then it just evolved from there. I have talked about the flexibility of the legion itself - the combination of legion special units and rules allow for so many different styles of army - that I want to be able to play them all!

There are also some units that I really want to do for my legion:
  • Legion Xiphon-pattern Interceptor - I love the model and I feel my Fire Raptor could do with an escort
  • Rogal Dorn... - Naturally. My legion would not be complete without him. I have seen some nice conversions but I am hoping that Forge World will release him in 2017!
  • ...and Aetos Dios - I've always wanted a Thunderhawk Gunship, it would be rude not to get one!
  • More tactical marines! - Surprisingly lacking in this department though a Calth/Prospero box would sort me out there
  • Tactical support marines - Got none so far, would be nice to have some especially as I have magnetised my Breachers special weapon options
  • Tartaros terminators - I love the kits but just haven't got around to these guys yet, I really want to do a templar-style colour scheme for them too as I think that would look ace

Plenty to do - my hobby sure does keep me busy! What do you guys think?

Until next time!

Imperial Fists: Legion Falchion Super-heavy Tank Destroyer

Hey all,

After the events of the Shadow War campaign, I thought I would take the time to cover one of my most potent units - the Legion Falchion.

This tank really lived up to its name over the campaign weekend and was to be honest very brutal. It's rules got updated in the latest Legiones Astartes Age of Darkness red book - it's points cost went up (understandably so - it was really cheap before) plus it gained an upgrade that grants it the Shock Pulse special rule that the Sicaran Venator has that forces the Falchion's target to be only able to snap fire in their following turn if the Falchion's volcano cannon scores a penetrating hit (even if it is a super heavy!) - considering that it is a strength D weapon, that's always going to happen unless you roll a 1! The same upgrade also grants the Feedback special rule that in the event that you roll a 1, you have a chance of taking some damage yourself so it is a double-edged sword technically but it's more in the Falchion's favour than not.

But enough about the brutality, I really love this kit - while arguably the ugliest of the Fellblade-chassis super heavies to be fielded by the Legiones Astartes, I think it is beautiful. The Fellblade is a sleek looking tank with its domed turret, the Glaive much the same plus it as a giant volkite cannon which is cool but I really like all the exposed pipework on the top of the Falchion feeding into its volcano cannon... I first saw it at the first Warhammer Fest at the Ricoh Arena, there was a beautifully painted one on the diorama near the Forge World tables and I knew straight away I was going to buy one at some point - I just wasn't sure if I was going to do it for my Imperial Fists or for a future project but I glad I got it for my Fists in the end - it looks great in yellow!

In other news, anybody who follows the Forge World on Facebook may have noticed this earlier today:

The Arachnus heavy lascannon battery for the Deredeo Pattern Dreadnought will soon be available to pre-order. The rules for this are in the updated Legiones Astartes Age of Darkness red book so if you have a copy, you can see how powerful this new upgrade could be - I think I'll be getting a set for my Deredeo!

Let us know what you think about the Falchion - how do you think it stacks up next to its siblings? Do you love the kit as much as I do? How about the Deredeo weapons upgrade - how do you think it stacks up against the other weapon options?

Until next time!

Imperial Fists: Legion Assault squad

Hi all!

I've talked about my breachers and how great I think they are however they have a glaringly obvious weakness in the fact that they are slow (and more so when using the Stone Gauntlet if I don't want them to lose their bonus). When playing the Stone Gauntlet, I like to have a rapid response squad to either support my slower moving breachers when charged by an enemy unit or to advance on a distant objective otherwise out of the reach of my breacher squads.

Sometimes I use veteran tactical squads in Rhino APCs for this purpose but I find assault marines are great for this role.

Bikes could also fill this role but I like the fact than my assault squad could be used to charge in and finish off a combat that is otherwise tying down my breachers. Power weapon options allow me to more effectively take on terminator armoured squads for instance (instead of purely relying on volume of attacks). They are also useful as a counter assault unit if you really want to slow down or otherwise stop that huge tactical unit from approaching your lines.

What do you guys think? Do you make use of other squads for this kind of role on the battlefield?

Until next time!

Hector Cephas - an introduction

Hi all!

Thank you Kaelo for the introduction last week but considering that all everyone knows is my favourite unit (the Legion Breacher Siege Squad), I think a full introduction is overdue so let’s do that!

I was always interested at a young age but I didn’t really know anyone who played so I ended up playing TCGs back then but now I have a lot of friends who all wargame, the door finally opened up for me. In August 2012, I had a demo game at my local Games Workshop and I was hooked, next thing I knew, I had a Dark Vengeance starter set on order, and a whole bunch of Grey Knight stuff as I liked the aesthetics (Dreadknights!).

Fast forward about year, I started looking at collecting a new army and for inspiration I started reading the Horus Heresy series and the odd 40k book here and there and Space Marines just became an obvious choice for me, particularly the Imperial Fist chapter so I started collecting them.

I love their siege warfare specialisation, it felt like a natural fit for my playstyle (defensive rather than offensive play, anti-vehicle/building armaments, siege tanks…) and as I learnt more and more about their history, it highlighted also how multi-dimensional they really are – just look at their successor chapters (i.e. the Black Templars and Crimson Fists). When their legion rules came out for Horus Heresy, I was so glad that this was accurately represented and funnily enough I bought an awful lot of marines from Forge World and started building my legion.

I originally started my legion with the Siege of Terra in mind but with all the stuff that Polux was involved in – the Battle of Phall, his involvement in Imperium Secundus (Pharos) – it was hard to ignore the wider war so I’ve been expanding to include other elements and have been considering creating a shattered legion army to introduce other legions into my collection (Ultramarines to team up with Polux for instance).

I also have other armies sitting on the side-lines currently that I can make use of here in the Heresy – I’ve got a Knight Household that I am currently in the process of deciding which household they are (most likely a custom one as there isn’t really enough 30k lore on the knights in my opinion and it will be easier to introduce them into my fluff to support any of my other armies). I also have a cultist army that is a work in progress – using the Age of Sigmar Khorne Bloodbound models from the starter set I have built up quite a horde of berserkers that could be used as a traitor army or even a chaos corrupted human population on an uncompliant world for a great crusade scenario.

Looking forward, I’m really looking forward to sharing my love of the Imperial Fists with you all by showing you elements of my army and possibly even starting up tactics discussions. I’m also planning on showing you all other parts of my hobby work as I am looking at working on the scenery for my Realm of Battle board (buildings, fortifications, cargo containers, even random scatter terrain as I feel the little details really help make a board look great!).

Until next time!

Imperial Space Marine: Imperial Fist

Good evening blog followers and welcome to another re-visioning of a iconic model to a Legion specific character.

For many who follow us here you're well aware of our passion for the Hobby and our love for all things Heresy and Legion. When the re-vamped release of the 2016Imperial  Space Marine model came out I knew I had to have one and had to find some way of fitting it into my army.

I've decided to use him to represent a Veteran it Vet Sgt from a Tactical squad.

For those of you who can remember far enough back like me *ahem-cough* showing my age now! Then you will we'll remember the original marine as depicted in the rear of the box.

You can see on the lower right hand side the metal figure the new plastic has been modelled after. It was an icon of its age and to this day represents a golden age in miniatures from GW.

So the I present to you my take on the Imperial Fist Legion version. I hope you like him!

I think the addition of a FW MK VI shoulder pad really makes it stand out.
The Lamenters yellow glaze really makes the yellow mix I use for my armour 'pop' and I have to say it was a real joy to paint.

I tried to keep the scheme simple to allow the model to show off its potential. The Crimson Fist variant on the box is very similar in its minimal approach to the colour scheme but the detail on the mini would easily lend itself to a more intricate use of colour for certain areas of the armour.

For me it truly represents a set of Articifer armour.

Anyway I hope you all enjoy feel free to comment and ask questions below.

As always 'For the Emperor!'

Imperial Fists Mastodon Part 1

Hello guys and welcome to the first installment of my Imperial Fists Mastodon build.
Darien and I were amongst the lucky few to get our hands on one of these fantastic new kits.

Why the two build posts?

Well it's fair to say that with all new kits there are some differences in people's experiences and issues with building them. So as the good wide reaching blog that we are Darien and I hope to enable everyone who ventures into building one of these with the widest depth of knowledge on potential issues pitfalls and work arounds so you all have an enjoyable experience.

We have some shared issues and some slightly different ones so hopefully this will help everyone :)

First up the wash!

I didn't have many issues in this area in fact after an overnight soak and then a brush up with a nail brush and a tooth brush all parts seemed to be clean of any  mould release.

I started with some of the easy stuff to get it out of the way and not in necessarily the order in the instructions.
This is a personal preference as it means I don't have to worry about it and go back to it later.
So I cleaned up and then 'heat shaped' the track sections to fit the main track assembles.

I did this by heating them in a bowl of hot water *be careful kids* and then pressing them into the recesses to ensure a nice fit and that the track sections blended into the main assembly.

Next up was cleaning up, cutting, shaving material off, filing and test fitting the floor sections.
This took forever and I didn't take WIP shots of his process.
I also fitted the doors and the hinges to the sides including the additional interior detail. I've purposely left off the hydraulic rams as I'll be painting the inside I wanted to make sure I made it as easy for my self as possible.

A point to note is that fitting one side to the floor sections is a good way forward not only is it advised in the instructions,  Blake Spencer himself advised both myself and Darien on the intricacies of the main hull section. Once that's built the rest goes together fairly easily, he said lol.

As you see this dry fit shows that the kits aren't perfect and so some heating of parts maybe required to ensure a good fit.

The superstructure was a bit of a pig for me and took a while of shaving material filing and sanding to get the fit just right.

Unfortunately this is an 'after shot'. What I've done here is to modify it slightly, as with Darien's, my rear ramp doesn't fit. So I've taken the alternative measure to remove a small lip on the lower part of the super structure either side of the 'V' section very carefully so it looks to be normal.
As a result the rear ramp now folds up into the superstructure a treat :)

I'll be following up soon in part two with additional build parts I plan on make the turret next so that everything is ready for priming and base coat.
I hope this helps and if you have any questions or comments below feel free.

Until next time, The Emperor Protects!

- Tylar
