Bad Moon Orks: Gretchin

Hello everyone,

With it being Orktober I'm back to show you how I have been getting along with my 40K Orks.

First up, it's the Gretchin!

Although I know they are not the best unit to take in games, I'll likely be taking them as a fluffy option.

The other reason for doing this unit is obviously because they're cool models and didn't take too long to paint in the grand scheme of things.

My Ork army has now reached around 1000 points, so I will be showing you each unit in a post over the coming weeks or so.

I have however recently finished a rather large ork contraption that i'll show you next time!

Bad Moon Orks: Ork Boyz 2

Hello everyone,

I hope you all had a good break over the holidays, I'm back with another quick post to show you the second group of ten ork boyz that I finished just before Christmas. Unfortunately I won't have much more than completed units to show you until myself and Kaelo start our Ork vs Ultramarine campaign in the not too distant future.

We're currently trying to find a happy medium between the games we'd both like to play in the campaign along with how the campaign will actually work. We'd also like to give you an idea of what the campaign will look like so we're working on a way to present that here on the blog but in a way that isn't too complex and time consuming for us to do. Stay tuned more on that soon though!

So onto the boyz!

These feel like they took an age to paint but finally I have a full twenty completed! Both myself and Kaelo are pretty close to being able to field 500 points of painted models so that is the level we are going to start our campaign games.

I have actually completed 11 ork boyz in this batch so I can move the Ork Nob from the first set of boyz into a dedicated unit of five Ork Nobz which will be used as the body guard for my Ork Warboss.

I have also realised that I haven't really put enough markings on both groups of the boyz armour plating. So I have decided to shave the raised areas off of the boyz helmets so I can add spikes or flames to the next batch to balance it out.

They do however have it on the tiny and probably useless armour on their backs! lol.

Not the best photo but it shows the full twenty in all their glory before they get shot to bits.

Due to a pretty productive christmas I have now completed ten Gretchin and I am half way through the Ork Nobz! so I should have them ready to show next time!

Bad Moon Orks: Killa Kan

Hello everyone,

I'm back to show you another update on my Bad Moon Ork army!

The next model to be completed is the Killa Kan, I have only completed one of a probable three so far though.

Although I am really happy with how this model came out, it was a pain to paint and seemed to take an age!

By spraying the model with Corax White for the undercoat, I then had to paint on the Yriel Yellow and make sure there was no white areas still showing through. Between doing this and adding the other base colours, it took a lot of perseverance to keep going back and touching areas up slightly.

I was much happier with how the base turned out on this model, I didn't rush it like I did with the Ork Boyz, so I will be going back and basing them again. I will then add a few grass tufts here and there just to add a bit more variety to the base.

Having played a few games with the Killa Kans, they are much better than they previously were but they are still very slow. So although they performed fairly well in the first game, in the second they were both destroyed easily before they got close to the enemy.

At I think 62 points with a rocket launcha (This may have gone down in the leaked chapter approved points) they are quite a points sink for something that doesn't do much in the game and tactically doesn't have a lot of significance either. Their inclusion is just because I love how they look!

So if you have had success with them let me know how! I do like the scorchas now, but they're no good if I can't get close enough with them!

So I think there will just be one Killa Kan in the force for a while now, the next one is primed and ready so when I have the chance I will get the next one started.

However, myself and Kaelo have now given ourselves a goal of completing 550 points by the time we play our first campaign game in the first week of January. So I have two more Ork Boyz to finish before completing some Stormboyz and then some Ork Nobz!

I do have a fair amount of time off over the course of December so I will hopefully achieve this!

So thanks again for reading, next time i'll have the second squad of Ork Boyz completed and then some campaign content in January!

Bad Moon Orks: Trukk

Hello everyone,

I'm back to give you an update on my fledgling Ork army!

As promised in my last post, I'll be showing the first of probably two trukks for the Orks..

Here it is with the boyz. I am pretty happy with how it turned out, I sprayed the whole model with Leadbelcher Spray paint and then began to add the other base colours.

The base colours did take quite a long time to complete as I had to go over the silver with a coat of Ceramite White before applying the Yriel Yellow. I also used other shades of sliver and a bronze to give the metal some variety.

For the washes I used a Seraphim Sepia wash into the recesses of the yellow panels and then used Lahmian Medium to thin down the sepia wash for another two coats only on the lower half of the panels. The second and third coats do need to be relatively thinned down as you want it to be subtle without any tidal marks.

For washing the metals I used a wash of Seraphim Sepia all over the metal areas being careful to avoid any pooling. Followed by a wash of Agrax Earth Shade to create an easy rusty/muddy look to the metal.

For the yellow I then dry brushed Screaming Skull onto the edges and upper areas to add some rough looking highlights.

The battle damage was then applied using a sponge to dab on some Doombull Brown followed by Leadbelcher. The Leadbelcher was mostly just sponged onto some of the panel edges so the Doombull Brown is the most visible weathering.

As always there are areas I have noticed for improvement or a bit of a touch up. I'll probably add some more Runefang Steel to the edges of the black to make it stand out a bit more.

Overall though I am very pleased with the result.

So I hope you like it, next time i'll show you my first now completed killa kan. I have also decided to do the basing on the Orks again as I found I got a much better result on the base of the killa kan. I just didn't rush the dry brushing!

Bad Moon Orks: Ork boyz

Hello everyone,

I'm back with an update on how my Bad Moon Ork project is progressing! Its been a while since my last post but I have been working on units for both my Bad Moon Orks and my Dispossessed for Age of Sigmar.

So I have now completed my first ten Ork boyz and I have based them along with my Warboss which you can see from my last post. Like the paint scheme I have chosen to go with a simple basing scheme of Dryad Bark, Balor Brown and then Screaming skull. The intention is to get an army together relatively quickly, however, painting two armies at the same time is slowing me down.

But finally ere are da boyz!

I'm intending to have at least thirty boyz painted in total but i'll probably end up painting more eventually.

I am also half way through my next ten boyz, so I'll hopefully be able to show them off soon!

I really like the armoured look of the ork nobz so I will be using them throughout my squads of boyz, however, I will also be painting up a standard ork nob for if I want to use the nobz in a squad of their own. The burnas are now pretty tasty in the new edition of 40K, but for playing HH/GC the power klaws are always important!

Thanks again for reading, next time I have a completed Ork Trukk to show you!

Happy hobbying,

Bad Moon Orks: Ork Warboss

Hello everyone,

I'm back to show you my Bad Moon Ork Warboss which belongs to my newly started Ork army for 30K and 40K.

I have always wanted to start an Ork army and I had actually began to paint a Goff force just before I joined the bunnies a few years ago. These models have formed the beginnings of my new Bad Moons army, so some were partially painted which has helped me get the army off to a swift start. This however does not mean I have given up on my Eldar project, which will continue after I have a decent and playable chunk of the Ork army completed!

So first model I have to show you is Warboss Gorzod of the Bad Moons (He will be based properly soon!)

The idea behind the Ork army is that it will be more of a table top standard army painting wise, as I can get them painted a lot quicker than I can my Eldar. I also don't need to concentrate as much on the layering and highlighting as I am using extensive battle damage across the army.

I have used sponging to be able to apply Doombull Brown and then a smaller amount of leadbelcher across the yellow armour.

I have then also been trialing a new way of painting Ork skin which has been layered up from a base of Elysian Green compared to Warboss Green that I have used in the past. I am also currently deciding what basing scheme to go with.

I'm hoping the yellow scheme will look quite striking on the table, but I also wanted to use the battle damage to keep the feel of Orks being a dirty and constantly warring race, so they shouldn't have pristine looking yellow armour.

As for the rest of the force I have almost completed an Ork Trukk, a squad of 10 Ork boyz and a Killa Kan with 20 storm boyz on order!

Just another quick post from me, I will look at doing some more Ork posts about lists and tactics in the future as well as showing you the units I manage to complete in the coming weeks and months!

So I hope you like the first bad moon to arrive on the blog and thanks again for reading,

Ork Warbosses

Hello!

I was hoping to begin bringing you updates regarding my Emperor's Children, however I am in the middle of moving house and I don't want to start assembling more minis! With Kaelo and myself planning on running a campaign in the coming months that will be featuring Ultramarines and Orks, I thought it was time that I showed off my Ork collection. The Orks will be featuring quite regularly in our Great Crusade campaigns, as the bulk of the Xenos fighting in this time was against Orks.

Today I wanted to begin with 3 of the Warbosses that I have completed. I would like to try and have a different feel to the Orks in each of the campaigns that they feature in and part of that will be the Warboss leading the army.

I will be naming them as we go along so that they can fit in with the backstory that we create. Hopefully they can claim many mighty hero's of the Imperium! First up is my Warboss with a Big Choppa, I usually use this as one of the relic version in the Ork codex but we are undecided on how we will handle the Orks in the Great Crusade.

Next up is my Warboss on Warbike using the Forge World model. He is currently awaiting the rest of his army to be completed. I have 24+ warbikers to ride with him, but they require a fair bit of work to get ready. I also want to add the Forge World Nob bikers in to give him a nasty squad to head up.

Last up is Ghaz. He is unlikely to feature in our campaigns as he is a bit to iconic a character in the 40k universe.

 The three all together:

Whilst I wait to be able to get started on the Emperor's Children I will be showing off some more of the units and army styles that I have planned for the Orks.

Until next time

30k Xenos: Orks

Hello all!

Having completed the Mastodon for my Sons of Horus, I needed to move onto getting some of my Orks painted. I am playing in a 40k competition at my local club over the weekend and needed a few more orks finished to make my list work. I had 7 boyz, 1 nob and 2 trukks to get done. The boyz and nob are done, I also took the time to rebase my other painted nobs onto 32mm. They look better on the bigger bases! The 2 trukks are well under way and I will be finishing these over the next few days.

The trukk in the background was one that I already had painted!

Current progress on the trukks.

The orks will be featuring in an upcoming campaign with Kaelo. This has got us to thinking about the orks as a 30k army and how well they will match up to the with the legions. Are current plan is to use them straight from the current codex and see how they get on. I know a lot of people think that the orks were bigger and I plan to include more units of nobs than normal. I'm of the opinion that boyz would still have been around in large numbers.

I would love to know what your thoughts are of orks in 30k and any experience you have in using them!

If you're around this Saturday 24th my local club The Bastion in Basingstoke is holding an open day. I will be present demoing 30k, we have a few stores coming, a bring and buy and another 5-6 games being demoed to try out. Check it out on Facebook here.

Happy hobbying!
