Horus Heresy: Vlka Fenryka Leviathan Dreadnought completed

I have finished the sample Leviathan Dreadnought that Games Workshop sent out for review to us now. So have a look :)

It is painted in the colours of the Vlka Fenryka/Space Wolves/Rout to the painting guide below. 

The Knotwork was actually incredibly fun to do. I will be doing a video guide on this on our YouTube channel in the near future if you want to see how I did it. So click and subscribe. 

The grey was airbrush of Stormvermin fur over black. I then highlighted and sponged it up with codex grey mixed with Stormvermin fur, to Administratum grey mixed with Stormvermin fur to give it a mottled and aged look. 

The white was Administratum grey mixed with white layered up to white at the highest. 

All metalwork was Warplock bronze to Leadbelcher (then with a final sponge or drybrush of Leadbelcher to Ironbreaker after the streaking grime). 

Chipping was 1:1:1 Warplock, dryad bark, Abaddon black. 

Yup so I gloss the surfaces with Vallejo gloss before I put transfers on. I then give them two to three further thin layers so the outside of the transfer skin vanishes and you can’t make it out anymore otherwise you get a horrible frosted square look. 

Then I put 2 thin brushed coats of Pledge (multi surface wax) over the model (waiting for each to dry in turn). 

I then covered the model in a nice mix of black and AK interactive for internals brown streaking grime. You can try an enamel wash like the range AK do and it will likely give the same results. 

After it dries, buff it off with high quality tissues (not toilet paper) or Q-tips. You can use White spirits too if needed. 

When dry you can then paint on or dab on Matt varnish, or maybe even use a nice varanish spray. 

Then bobs your uncle. 

Vlka Fenryka: Primarch Leman Russ

Hi all

Here is my finished Primarch of the Vlka Fenryka. Leman Russ. 

I have reposed him slightly just by hearing his legs and gluing his head so that he is looking in the direction he is sprinting. This also required a small bit of modification to his hair, but not lots. 

I decided not to put him on his feature base, and instead have him on a regular stone. I may look into magnetising him soon so the option is there, but chances are because of all of the modifications I did to Freki and Geri's pose, I might just get a second set eventually. 

I also deigned to not go the pulsating with power sword or axe route. This is mainly as most of the art for him does not show Weapons "blazing with raw power" so I decided to show it as per Neil Roberts' art work.  

The wolf belt was painted from white with various shades of blacks, browns and Seraphim Sepia. 

I had to add a small amount of green stuff to his hair to allow for the repose. 

And here he is with the Wolfkin. 

There will be more Rout coming soon, but I will be concentrating on finishing my Zone Mortalis board over the next few weeks.

Vlka Fenryka: Deredeo

Hello all

It has been a while coming but I have finally completed my Deredeo Dreadnought for the Rout. 

So this was my first of many Dreadnoughts for the Wolves, a tester if you will. I had an Eddy kicking around and never looking as if it would ever be painted. So I thought "why not just do it for your Wolves, let's see if I can make it fenrisian". 

He does fit in well with the gang as it stands, so I am quite pleased with my palette and weathering. 

The pattern on his torso does disappear in some lights, as does the wolf head on the red stripe. 

This is a bit of a shame, as I really can't make the Red any darker without changing the feel/look of the model. I will ask advice from FW next time I speak to them. 

I made use of Typhon corrosion for the first time on this model after hearing it recommended it thoroughly by Mark Bedford. It is really good and I think I will use it in the future on most models. 

I also used dry earth and a bone coloured set of weathering powders for the shins. This was the first time I have used them on a Dreadnought before. I used AK Interactive pigment fixer (still not 100% convinced that it will stop fingerprints moving the pigments all over the model, but we will see). 

I also used black soot over the barrels which was then fixed with pigment fixer. 

The rest of the scheme is as my Vlka Fenryka scheme which you can easily link to on the left in desktop mode.

Community Question: Weathering Powders - How do you use yours?

Hello all

I am opening this up for discussion: How do you use your weathering powders?

I am a fan of the effects you can get with weathering powders, especially around tracks and shins. The issues I generally find is, that as soon as I start gaming with them I somehow manage to get my fingers on the powdered parts and transport finger prints across the model. 

I have tried to seal them, but with often undesirable results. 

Or are they just for display miniatures only?

Any advice to share with the world?

Vlka Fenryka: Deredeo Work in progress.

Hi all

So we are all busy at the moment, but luckily I found some time to take my Deredeo on a bit. 

I am happy with how he is looking currently. Sadly the gold iconography gets a bit lost on the reds. The gold iconography in the art is a lot brighter than what is on the Transfers (this may be because they need to be sealed onto the model carefully though). 

The barrels in the art work are slightly worn too so I tried hard to achieve this effect on the steel of the autocannons.  

The red stripe was done with blending Gal Vorbak Red and Word Bearer red (about 50:50)  up to about 30:70 towards the top. 

You can also see that the armour has had the armour wash now too (see my Vlka Fenryka painting guide for more information). 

I cut one of the Vlka Knotwork pieces in half and applied half to either side of the gorget. Once again it gets kind of lost on the model on most photos. 

So still a way to go as you can see, but it is definitely a good warm up for my next projects. 

The goal is also to eventually be able to achieve this, and guess what . . . . I have a very good plan.

Painting a Wolf Pelt

Hi all

Ok so I had to paint a wolf pelt, and do it well (otherwise Leman would be mad at me). 

So first I had to choose a colour. Grey would be lost on the model in my opinion, Black would look slightly lazy, white would look a bit too prissy. Soooo the resounding choice could only ever be Generic white and brown wolf. 

My reference:

I undercoated Chaos black. 

I then did a coat of Corax white all over then another Zenithal spray from the top of the pelt (to help add depth to the recesses)

I then did a thinned 50/50 White Scar and screaming skull airbrush over the model. 

Corvus Black was then airbrushed in the centre of the piece along the spine. 

Screaming skull and White Scar mixture was then drybrushed at the point where the light and dark meet to prepare for the next stage. 

I then airbrushed Seraphim Sepia where the black meets the light parts. This was done at a low psi to make it easier to target and prevents pushing of the wet wash around the fur with the air. 

The edges are left the off white. 

A light drybrush of White Scar and Screaming Skull was then used to highlight the fur tufts. 

So I'm looking forward to getting Freki and Geri started now.

Burning of Prospero Display (Pic heavy)

Hello Bunnies!

I was up at Warhammer World on Sunday and I couldn't miss out on the opportunity to see the full Burning of Prospero display board that was previewed recently.

I was really impressed! It looks awesome and has had some additional models added to it to fill it up a bit more. There are even 2 models that have only been previewed added. The new custodes skimmer and contemptor. 

It full of lots of awesome little details. I love Russ and his wolves storming the bridge and the Leviathan ripping the contemptor apart. The buildings and scenery are fantastic as well. 

Well worth going to take a look at! I was very impressed and it is one of my favourite dioramas that GW have added to the miniature hall. I look forward to seeing redone with the dual between Magnus and Russ in the near future! 

The miniature hall has had quite a lot of changes recently, so if its been a while since you last went round it is now well worth having another look!
